Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the use of nonpolluting, zero-emission hydrogen as fuel could be the cornerstone of a new energy economy. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. An invisible, tasteless, colorless gas, it can be converted to nonpolluting, zero-emission, renewable energy. When burned in an internal combustion engine, hydrogen produces mostly harmless water vapor. It performs even better in fuel cells, which can be 2.5 times as efficient as internal-combustion engines. Zero-emission hydrogen does not contribute to CO2-caused global warming. Abundant and renewable, it is unlikely to be subject to geopolitical pressures or scarcity concerns. In this new edition of his pioneering book Tomorrow's Energy, Peter Hoffmann makes the case for hydrogen as the cornerstone of a new energy economy. Hoffmann covers the major aspects of hydrogen production, storage, transportation, fuel use, and safety. He explains that hydrogen is not an energy source but a carrier, like electricity, and introduces the concept of “hydricity,” the essential interchangeability of electricity and hydrogen. He brings the hydrogen story up to date, reporting on the latest developments, including new hydrogen and fuel-cell cars from GM, Daimler, BMW, Honda, and Toyota. He describes recent political controversies, including Obama administration Energy Secretary (and Nobel laureate in Physics) Steven Chu's inexplicable dismissal of hydrogen—which puts him at odds with major automakers, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and others. Our current energy system is a complex infrastructure, and phasing in hydrogen will take effort and money. But if we consider the real costs of fossil fuels—pollution and its effects, international tensions over gas and oil supplies, and climate change—we would be wise to promote its development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials have the potential to be the centrepiece for the transition to viable renewable energy technologies if they realise a specific suite of properties and achieve a desired set of performance metrics. The envisioned transition involves the discovery of materials that enable generation, conversion, storage, transmission, and utilization of renewable energy. This book presents, through the eye of materials chemistry, an umbrella view of the myriad of classes of materials that make renewable energy technologies work. They are poised to facilitate the transition of non-renewable and unsustainable energy systems of the past into renewable and sustainable energy systems of the future. It is a story that often begins in chemistry laboratories with the discovery of new energy materials. Yet, to displace materials in existing energy technologies with new ones, depends not only on the ability to design and engineer a superior set of performance metrics for the material and the technology but also the requirement to meet a demanding collection of economic, regulatory, social, policy, environmental and sustainability criteria. Disruption in the traditional way of discovering materials is coming with the emergence of artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotic automation designed to accelerate the well-established discovery process, massive libraries of materials can be evaluated and the possibilities are endless. This book provides a perspective on the application of these new technologies to this field as well as an overview of energy materials discovery in the broader techno-economic and social context. Any budding researcher or more experienced materials scientist will find a guide to a fascinating story of discovery and emerge with a vision of what is next.

Domenici, has written a thoughtful assessment of the progress Americans have made in their efforts to bring the benefits of nuclear power to mankind. He outlines what went wrong and why, and in this noble quest, what we must now do to recover from and repudiate past blunders. Senator Domenici has been called Congress' chief apostle for nuclear power and in this book he shares his vision and passion for a renewed commitment, by this nation, and the rest of the world, to the dreams that nuclear energy can help us fulfill. It is also a book about what kind of world our grandchildren could inhabit if we fail in making and keeping such a commitment. Visit our website for sample chapters!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ongoing urbanization and ever-growing harmful environmental impacts from urban areas necessitate a sustainability transformation in cities. However, cities are also centers of wealth creation and consumption, which both drive environmental degradation. It is clear that cities need to re-establish themselves as low-energy/low-carbon systems, but the transformation is complex in many ways and time is running out. This Special Issue, “Energy Efficient Cities of Today and Tomorrow”, seeks to provide a more profound understanding of the future energy requirements of urban areas and low-energy and low-carbon cities. The published papers range from macro-level assessments of cities manifesting themselves as forerunners in their environmental work to micro-level studies of pro-environmental attitudes and their impacts on individual emissions, a carbon footprint impacts of sharing of goods and services.

Book excerpt: As we look toward the beginning of a new century, new ideas, new perspectives, and new approaches to our society need and deserve careful attention. I know how difficult writing can be, and I commend you for the time and effort you have invested in your book. Former Vice President, Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Al Gore In these times we need hope and vision more than anything else. This is a book that offers both. It is a story about John, who time travels one hundred years into the future to witness some of the positive changes that will occur in society and the world. At heart, the tale is a sweet, spiritual, environmental story, but its real power is the authors ability to involve the readers imagination in the exploration of the world as it could evolve. There is a Tomorrow made me think about what it will take to break out of our selfish, me-first, consumer and greed-oriented society, and about how we can replace it with a more spiritual, creative, Earth-sensitive and community-oriented future. In visualization, one of the first rules involves creating an ideal future scene, as realistic and believable in your minds eye as possible. David Nazars prose does just that, providing a wealth of details that leaves just enough space for the readers imagination to spark them into life. I believe the message in this book is a tremendous gift to the planet, a tool that can act as a catalyst to bring about positive social change. With so much focus on the problems of our present, it is a joy and a relief to be taken by the hand and shown an alternative vision of society, where humanitys best instincts rise to the occasion. The telling and retelling of such stories may be the first step in achieving that reality. Sophia Zilla
