A fair number, particularly after the start of the eighteenth century, joined other denominations such as Baptists, Congregationalists or Methodists. Although the State at various periods did its best to eradicate Catholicism and all forms of Protestant nonconformity, particularly during the late-sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, large numbers persisted in their thinking and were persecuted for their beliefs. Therefore, it is quite usual, almost expected, for those researching their family in England and Wales to find it includes religious dissenters. Identifying these folk is not always straightforward: they may have continued to use the local parish church for their baptisms, marriages and burials; and may have belonged to congregations that kept few if any records. But there are often clues. Their beliefs, at variance to those of the Anglican Church, may have been short-lived or they may have lasted through many generations and perhaps still persist today. As more and more records relating to Protestant nonconformists become available online, the task in discovering more about them is becoming easier. And that trend is sure to continue.

Book excerpt: This is the final volume in a four-volume series, using contemporary texts to illustrate key themes in the history of Nonconformity in England and Wales. Although the twentieth century was in many ways a century of decline, this book shows that there was still much life in the nonconformist tradition. It also looks at contemporary issues such as racism and the place of women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1972, this volume shows the potency, and the limitations of Nonconformity in shaping the beginning of modern Britain. It draws upon a wide range of sources including the writings and discussions of Nonconformists themselves, their critics, and contemporary commentators. The extracts and the extensive introduction set Nonconformity in the broader context of social and political history, and address the ‘life’ of the free Churches: their conflicts, internal and externals, their organization and spread, and their theology. The collection demonstrates the variety and diversity of Nonconformity as well as the controversies and debates of the period. This book will be an excellent reference for students of History, English and Theology, and will provide a starting point for those who wish to explore Nonconformist history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Protestant Nonconformity in Wales: From Its Rise to the Present Time The history of Nonconformity in Wales has hitherto been comparatively unknown to English readers. There is not, among the endless variety of works, on almost every conceivable subject, with which English literature abounds, a single volume on the rise and progress of Nonconformity in the Principality. To supply that defect is the design of the present work. The public is to decide how worthy of his subject the Author has accomplished his task. The time, the labour, and the expense of collecting and arranging the materials have been so enormous, to a person in his circumstances, that, had he foreseen them, it is doubtful whether he could have mustered courage to undertake the work. However, he has now the satisfaction of offering to the public the fruit of hard and expensive labour, and not what has cost him nothing. It has been the Author's aim throughout to give a fair statement of facts, and to leave those facts to speak for themselves, without interspersing among them long dissertations of his own. Firmly attached, as he is, to his own creed, he has written this volume under the impression that it is not within the province of an historian to criticise the creeds of other people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As well as outlining the shape of Welsh religious history generally, this volume describes the development of Calvinistic Methodist thought up to and beyond the secession from the Established Church in 1811, and the way in which the Evangelical Revival impacted the Older Dissent to create a vibrant popular Nonconformity. Along with analysing aspects of theology and doctrine, the narrative assesses the contribution of such key personalities as William Williams Pantycelyn, Thomas Charles of Bala andThomas Jones of Denbigh, and the Nonconformists Titus Lewis, Joseph Harris ‘Gomer’, George Lewis, David Rees and Gwilym Hiraethog. Following the notorious ‘Treachery of the Blue Books’ of 1847 and the Religious Census of 1851, Anglicanism regained ground, and among the themes treated in the latter chapters are the influence of High Church Tractarianism and the Broad Church ‘Lampeter Theology’ in the parishes. The volume concludes by assessing the intellectual culture of evangelicalism personified by Lewis Edwards and Thomas Charles Edwards, and describes the challenges of Darwinism, philosophical Idealism and a more critical attitude to the biblical text.
