Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mumbai? Bombay? How do we explain this city and ourselves within it? How do the city and the city dweller together allow for representations of urban life to arise in literature and the fine arts? This book is an understanding of Mumbai, both as an architectural and literary space, through the lens of spatial criticism and the technique of flânerie. As an icon of experiences, Mumbai is felt through the simultaneous acts of walking, observing, remembering and articulating. In analyzing four novels, namely Baumgartner’s Bombay, Ravan and Eddie, Shantaram and Baluta, the book claims that the characters and their authors offer an alternative vision of the city, as they also construct a transient place for themselves. This act of flânerie is an act of transgression as it turns the outside into the inside, changing public space into private space. As the characters serve to disrupt meaning, uncover hidden histories and expose power relations involved in the representation of place, they actualize many possibilities and meanings. Using the novel as a literary device, the authors have told stories, not only of the protagonist-flâneur, but also of people around them; sometimes in detail, sometimes in passing. In contesting, claiming and owning the lives, the stories, and the city, the humane aspect is never forgotten.

Book excerpt: “Bombay Daak: Discovering the Kolis of the Seven Islands” In the bustling heart of modern Mumbai lies a rich tapestry of history, culture, and tradition, interwoven with the timeless rhythms of the Arabian Sea. This is a story of the Kolis, the indigenous fishing communities whose legacy dates back to the time when this vibrant city was but a collection of seven islands. As the world rushes forward into an era of rapid urbanization, it becomes ever more crucial to look back, to uncover the roots that nourish the ever-growing tree of Mumbai's identity. Bombay Daak is a journey into the heart of this coastal culture, a cultural odyssey that takes us beyond the gleaming skyscrapers and neon lights to a world where the sea's embrace is both livelihood and lifeline. The Kolis, whose lives are intricately bound to the ebb and flow of the Arabian Sea, offer us a glimpse into the history, traditions, and challenges that have shaped their unique way of life. As we embark on this journey, we find ourselves exploring the nooks and crannies of Mahikawati, the capital established by King Bhimdev on Mahim Island in the 13th century. We walk the sandy shores where fisherfolk have cast their nets for centuries, feel the rhythm of ancient melodies, and savor the flavors of their culinary heritage. We encounter stories of resilience, community bonds, and a deep-rooted connection to the sea that transcends generations. Bombay Daak is not just a story; it is an invitation to engage with the Kolis' past, present, and future. It is a bridge between the modernity of Mumbai and the enduring traditions of its coastal natives. It is an acknowledgment of the Kolis' significance in shaping the city's cultural mosaic and the challenges they face in an evolving urban landscape. Through this book, we hope to celebrate the Kolis' contributions, honor their heritage, and highlight their aspirations for the future. We invite you to journey with us, to discover the Kolis of the Seven Islands, and to gain a deeper appreciation of the rich history and culture that continue to thrive amidst the bustling metropolis of Mumbai. Welcome to Bombay Daak. Your voyage of discovery begins here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A political party worker who produces crowds for electoral rallies. A “prison specialist” who serves other people’s prison sentences in exchange for a large fee. An engineer who is able to secure otherwise impossible building permits. These and other dealmakers—whose behind-the-scenes expertise and labor are often invisible—have an intrinsic role in the city's functioning and can be indispensable for navigating everyday life in Bombay, one of the world’s most complex, dynamic, and populous cities. Bombay Brokers collects profiles of thirty-six such “brokers.” Written by anthropologists, artists, city planners, and activists, these character sketches bring into relief the paradox that these brokers’ knowledge and labor are simultaneously invisible yet essential for Bombay’s functioning. Their centrality reveals the global-scale paradoxes and gaps that these brokers mediate and bridge. In this way, Bombay Brokers prompts a reconsideration of what counts as legitimate and valuable knowledge and labor while offering insight into changing structures of power in Bombay and around the globe.
