Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion, Theology and Morals, Vol. 1 of 2 Materials for this work have been abundant too abun dant for easy selection. Mr. Scott wrote prolifically on the many branches of the general subject of this collection. The work of elimination has been a long one even longer than the work of collecting the articles. Many of Mr. Scott's best articles are put aside, because repetitive of others. The ones herein chosen seem the most expressive of the Editor's mind and the most permanent in their subject matter. The com piler has taken few or no liberties with the text. It was found necessary to change the headings of most of the articles, so as to make them accord with the subject arrangement. Fre quently, passages have been eliminated that were repetitiveof other parts of the text. For it will be borne in mind that Mr. Scott wrote day by day, in relation to current matters, without thought that his work would be incorporated in a posthumous book. Had he written according to the plan of a book, he would have followed a consistent development of his theme, that now cannot be fully attained; yet we believe the arrangement will be considered by readers as an orderly and satisfactory sequence. Deists are only the more contemptnble, because they sheet the language, while they ruthlessly sacrifice the only admissible principles, of philosophy. It is obvious. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Metaphysical and Ethical Science: Applied to the Evidences of Religion In the Preface to the first edition, it was remarked, that though so many volumes have been written upon the Evidences of Religion, it does not appear that the subject is exhausted, or that the productions of a former age are, in every respect, suited to the exigencies of our own times. There are peculiar forms or infidelity or peculiar causes of latitudinarian opinions in religion, which are more prevalent in one age than another. I have endeavored in this work to meet those objections and difficulties which are most current in our own day; to meet them with that course of argument and illustration which has seemed most satisfactory to my own mind, and without fear of incurring the charge of a want of originality on the one hand, or of a fondness for novel and abstruse speculations on the other. I have not been afraid, either to follow in the footsteps of others, if their arguments happened to be best adapted to my purpose, or to strike off into a new path, if I might thereby more surely and safely attain the great object in view. Those who find little that is new in this book, may be assured that it was not written for them, but for a class of readers who are less adequately informed upon the subject. Those who dislike abstract speculations, may pass it over for a similar reason; if they have never been entangled in a web of metaphysical subtilties, a clew to the labyrinth will be of no service to them. Some repetitions may be found in these pages, as I have been more willing to incur the charge of prolixity and a frequent recurrence to the same line of remark and argument, than of obscurity or an affected abstruseness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World as Will and Idea, Vol. 1 The style of "Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung" is sometimes loose and involved, as is so often the case in German philosophical treatises. The translation of the book has consequently been a matter of no little difficulty. It was found that extensive alteration of the long and occasionally involved sentences, however likely to prove conducive to a satisfactory English style, tended not only to obliterate the form of the original but even to imperil the meaning. Where a choice has had to be made, the alternative of a somewhat slavish adherence to Schopenhauer's ipsissima verba has accordingly been preferred to that of inaccuracy. The result is a piece of work which leaves much to be desired, but which has yet consistently sought to reproduce faithfully the spirit as well as the letter of the original. As regards the rendering of the technical terms about which there has been so much controversy, the equivalents used have only been adopted after careful consideration of their meaning in the theory of knowledge. For example, "Vorstellung" has been rendered by "idea," in preference to "representation," which is neither accurate, intelligible, nor elegant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Philosophy, Vol. 1 IN these times, when knowledge of all sorts is making such general progress, and science continually open ing further discoveries in nature, and also the means of practically applying them, it doubly imports that the moral progress - the progress of the mind - sh ould be equally attended to. I say, doubly; for first, the mind, as mind, is of most consequence, and that that therefore should be set in a state to take right views and form just conclusions, is the primary concern; for did not the mind first conceive, no action at all would follow, and where it conceives erroneously, ill effects result: secondly, therefore, when knowledge begins to enlighten mankind, and science, as now, to put power into their hands, by enabling them to lay hold, as it were, on the elements, -to use, and in some de gree, command them, - it is of vital importance that the directing mind should be enlarged with that increase of power. It would be dreadful, indeed, if the power were increased, but the mind not at the B. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Lactantius, Vol. 1 of 2 Therefore, leaving the authors of this earthly philosophy, who bring forward nothing certain, let us approach the right path; for if I considered these to be sufficiently suitable guides to a good life, I would both follow them myself, and exhort others to follow them. But since they disagree among one another with great contention, and are for the most part at variance with themselves, it is evident that their path is by no means straightforward; since they have severally marked out distinct ways for themselves according to their own will, and have left great confusion to those who are seeking for the truth. But since the truth is revealed from heaven to us who have received the mystery of true religion, and since we follow God, the teacher of wisdom and the guide to truth, we call together all, without any distinction either of sex or of age, to heavenly pasture. For there is no more pleasant food for the soul than the know ledge of truth, to the maintaining and explaining of which we have destined seven books, although the subject is one of almost boundless and immeasurable labour; so that if any one should wish to dilate upon and follow up these things to their full ex tent, he would have such an exuberant supply of subjects, that neither books would find any limit, nor speech any end. But on this account we will put together all things briefly, because those things which we are about to bring forward are so plain and lucid, that it seems to be more wonderful that the truth appears so obscure to men, and to those especially who are commonly esteemed wise, or because men will only need to be trained by us, - that is, to be recalled from the error in which they are entangled to a better course of life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of Spiritualism: A System of Moral Philosophy, Founded on Evolution and the Continuity of Man's Existence Beyond the Grave Along this causeway have been waged the mighty battles of the ages, fought over again in' the life of every indi vidual. It is the war between the animal side of man's nature and the spiritual. As the race has unfolded, gath ering higher and clearer perceptions of right, truth and justice, age after age, the gain has been on the side of the spiritual. As in the individual, the brute forces of the de sires have been co-ordinated Wlth the moral and spiritual perceptions. Because of this evolution, is there conflict between the two sides of man's nature. Because he is an ammal physi cally, is there war between his physical and his spiritual tendencies. To harmonize this apparent anom aly, by which the aspirations of an angel are linked with the passions of a devrl, has been the primary object of all systems of theology. The existence of these spiritual aspirations indicated the innate purity of the spirit and its primal perfection. That it was, in fact, so prone to fly to the ungoverned selfishness and lust of brutes, indicated a fallen and depraved state. The dogmas growing out of this erroneous view were also dependent on equally false ideas of God. A perfect, infinite and good God, would not create an imperfect man. His creation would be in his own image. Man was far from perfect. His imperfection was the result of sin and wicked ness. As his Creator does not wish him to sin, he sins from choice. His free agency shifts the burden of responsi bility from God to himself. Created perfect, he has sinned by choice, and became depraved through and by means of his own wickedness. He has corrupted himself. To escape the infinite consequences, he must have fa1th in a verbal revelation and a certain scheme of redemption. Immortality is not the result of immutable laws, and has no relation to the constitution of things. Men reared in this belief, when they cast it aside are often unbalanced. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral and Metaphysical Philosophy: Philosophy of the First Six Centuries The first part of this treatise on Ancient Philosophy was published, in a separate form, three years ago. I said in the preface to it that the second part must be entirely rewritten, the original draft in the Encyclopædia being as unsatisfactory to the writer as it could be to the readers of it. I did not at all know, at that time, what a task I was undertaking, or how much the difficulties of it would be increased by the brevity I had imposed upon myself, and by my determination to give only what I had originally projected - a sketch of the progress of thought - not a report of systems, which would save the student of them from the necessity of referring to Brucker or to Ritter. Considering how poor the result is, I am ashamed to confess how much trouble it has cost me to fix the form and method of the treatise, or how often the preliminary portion of it has been recast. I have no doubt that many will think I have been more diffuse than my limits warranted; that many will complain of me for neglecting writers whom I ought to have noticed; that the two classes of critics will agree in the opinion that I have always chosen the wrong occasions for compression or for dilation. Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. God and Infinity, and Truth and Good, as being' of and coeternal with God, are grander and nobler studies; and our noblest study after these is to know and see things truly, just as God knows and sees them in their real being, as nearly as we possibly can with Our limited minds; not in their mere qualities as physical science views them. Weight, color, hardness, affinity, attraction, repulsion, motion, extension, mode, form are all qualities, not realities; and it is realities that we shall seek for in Metaphysics.
