Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is to be found in the simplest of our daily activities and especially through total surrender to whatever is His will for each of us. That is the message of this 18th-century inspirational classic by Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Its encouragement to live in the present moment, accepting everyday obstacles with humility and love, has guided generations of seekers to spiritual peace and holiness. In this timeless spiritual classic, de Caussade presents the simple, profound gospel message that Jesus lived and taught: My meat is to do the will of my Father in heaven. The author states, The will of God gives to all things a supernatural and divine value for the soul submitting to it. The duties it imposes and those it contains become holy and perfect because everything it touches shares its divine character. This special volume of the famous spiritual treatise also includes the many insightful letters of Father de Caussade on the practice of self-abandonment. These numerous letters provide a great additional source of wisdom and much practical guidance for how to grow in abandonment and to deepen our union with God in our daily lives.De Caussade shows that this practice of self-abandonment to God's will is the key to attaining true peace and virtue, and that it is readily available to all people - from beginners to those well advanced in the spiritual life. He also shows how to determine what God's will is for us. He reveals that it is not extraordinary feats that God expects for our growth in holiness, but rather heroic attention to every detail in our lives and humble acceptance of our daily lot in life as coming from His hand. The rich spiritual lessons in this book have stood the test of time, offering real and practical assistance to all people because its message is simple and clear, one that the reader will find to be a rare treasure of inspiration and direction to be referred to again and again.

Book II. c. xviii., says: I have written seven books on Baptism against the Donatists, who strive to defend themselves by the authority of the most blessed bishop and martyr Cyprian; in which I show that nothing is so effectual for the refutation of the Donatists, and for shutting their mouths directly from upholding their schism against the Catholic Church, as the letters and act of Cyprian. Book Synopsis The Guard of the Tree of Life, a Discourse on the Sacraments by : Samuel Bolton
Download or read book The Guard of the Tree of Life, a Discourse on the Sacraments written by Samuel Bolton and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rare work by Bolton is what he calls a sacramental discourse on sanctifying God’s name in the coming to and participation in (particularly) of the Lord’s Supper; though his exposition is applicable to any of God’s ordinances. From Leviticus 10:3, Bolton explains three key doctrines: 1. That they who have anything to do with any ordinance of God, draw near to God. 2. That they who draw near to God in any ordinance, must sanctify God in it. 3. That if we do not sanctify God in an ordinance, he will be sanctified on us. Bolton makes application of how faith works, how repentance works and how to have a holy reverence of God and his ordinances. He shows there is obedience in being fruitful in attending God’s ordinances, and that the Christian should labor to see God-glorifying fruit through the work of Jesus Christ and the power of the Spirit. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.
Book Synopsis John Owen on the Lord's Supper by : Jon D. Payne
Download or read book John Owen on the Lord's Supper written by Jon D. Payne and published by Banner of Truth. This book was released on 2004 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The approach of the Puritans to the Lord's Supper is a comparatively neglected aspect of their heritage. In particular, John Owen's twenty-five sacramental discourses are little known and little read, even among those who value his massive contribution to the understanding and defense of the doctrines of the gospel. In John Owen on the Lord's Supper, Jon D. Payne has set out to rescue Owen's teaching on the Supper from this neglect. He sets the scene by outlining Owen's life and teaching. He then goes on to examine the development of Reformed teaching on the Supper- especially the part played by Calvin and Peter Martyr Vermigli- before focusing on Owen's Twenty-five Discourses Suitable to the Lord's Supper, delivered between 1669 and 1682, and taken down by hearers. But the latter part of this volume is occupied by the Discourses themselves. Here the reader will encounter an Owen less concerned to define and defend truth than to comfort and help even the weakest of believers as they come to the Lord's Supper. The great and lasting value of this work comes from Owen's obvious desire to promote 'delight in Christ, thankfulness unto him and the keeping of his word', in all who partake.

Book excerpt: The Sacraments are at the very centre of the Christian life, yet many today receive them without a clear understanding of what the graces they signify and contain. This document from the International Theological Commission explores the relationship between the faith of the recipient and the power and grace conferred by the sacrament looking at what is needed for the fruitful reception of the sacraments in order for them to help the receiver grow in faith. There is "a profound unity between the act by which we believe and the contents to which we give our assent.... In the Christian conception it is not possible to think of a faith without sacramental expression, nor a sacramental practice in the absence of ecclesial faith" [51] The document treats each sacrament but gives saves its most comprehensive treatment for marriage exploring the challenges posed by the increasing number of marriages where the spouses have an incomplete understanding of marriage as a sacrament.

Book Synopsis Christian Theologies of the Sacraments by : Justin S. Holcomb

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delves into the ancient debate regarding the nature and purpose of the seven sacraments What are the sacraments? For centuries, this question has elicited a lively discussion and among theologians, and a variety of answers that do anything but outline a unified belief concerning these fundamental ritual structures. In this extremely cohesive and well-crafted volume, a group of renowned scholars map the theologies of sacraments offered by key Christian figures from the Early Church through the twenty-first century. Together, they provide a guide to the variety of views about sacraments found throughout Christianity, showcasing the variety of approaches to understanding the sacraments across the Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox faith traditions. Chapters explore the theologies of thinkers from Basil to Aquinas, Martin Luther to Gustavo Gutiérrez. Rather than attempting to distill their voices into a single view, the book addresses many of the questions that theologians have tackled over the two thousand year history of Christianity. In doing so, it paves the way for developing theologies of sacraments for present and future contexts. The text places each theology of the sacraments into its proper sociohistorical context, illuminating how the church has used the sacraments to define itself and its congregations over time. The definitive resource on theologies of the sacraments, this volume is a must-read for students, theologians, and spiritually interested readers alike.

Is it private opinion with no role in the public sphere? In It Is Right and Just, bestselling author Scott Hahn and Brandon McGinley challenge our idea of religion and its role in society. Hahn and McGinley argue that to answer questions over religious liberty, justice, and peace, we must first reject the insidious lie perpetuated by secular-liberal culture: that religion is a private matter. Book Synopsis Cormac McCarthy and the Signs of Sacrament by : Matthew L. Potts
Download or read book Cormac McCarthy and the Signs of Sacrament written by Matthew L. Potts and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although scholars have widely acknowledged the prevalence of religious reference in the work of Cormac McCarthy, this is the first book on the most pervasive religious trope in all his works: the image of sacrament, and in particular, of eucharist. Informed by postmodern theories of narrative and Christian theologies of sacrament, Matthew Potts reads the major novels of Cormac McCarthy in a new and insightful way, arguing that their dark moral significance coheres with the Christian theological tradition in difficult, demanding ways. Potts develops this account through an argument that integrates McCarthy's fiction with both postmodern theory and contemporary fundamental and sacramental theology. In McCarthy's novels, the human self is always dispossessed of itself, given over to harm, fate, and narrative. But this fundamental dispossession, this vulnerability to violence and signs, is also one uniquely expressed in and articulated by the Christian sacramental tradition. By reading McCarthy and this theology alongside postmodern accounts of action, identity, subjectivity, and narration, Potts demonstrates how McCarthy exploits Christian theology in order to locate the value of human acts and relations in a way that mimics the dispossessing movement of sacramental signs. This is not to claim McCarthy for theology, necessarily, but it is to assert that McCarthy generates his account of what human goodness might look like in the wake of metaphysical collapse through the explicit use of Christian theology.
