Book Synopsis Caligula Et Camus by : Sophie Bastien
Download or read book Caligula Et Camus written by Sophie Bastien and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2006 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume looks at the growing interest of different specialists in the problems associated with political discourse, in general, and parliamentary discourse, as one of its major sub-genres, in particular. Its main goal is to offer a deeper understanding of the diversity of parliamentary practices across space and time. The papers aim to highlight the role played by local social and historical factors, ideologies, collective mentalities, and social psychology in building up culture-specific traditions of political institutions. Approaching the problems from a large variety of theoretical perspectives, the investigations are based on flexible, interdisciplinary, and multi-layered methodologies, offering an image of the multifaceted manifestations of parliamentary debates. The volume addresses specialists in several fields, such as linguistics, discourse analysis, history, political science, sociology, (social) anthropology, (social) psychology, media and communication.
Book Synopsis Expressing and Describing Surprise by : Agnès Celle
Download or read book Expressing and Describing Surprise written by Agnès Celle and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among emotions, surprise has been extensively studied in psychology. In linguistics, surprise, like other emotions, has mainly been studied through the syntactic patterns involving surprise lexemes. However, little has been done so far to correlate the reaction of surprise investigated in psychological approaches and the effects of surprise on language. This cross-disciplinary volume aims to bridge the gap between emotion, cognition and language by bringing together nine contributions on surprise from different backgrounds – psychology, human-agent interaction, linguistics. Using different methods at different levels of analysis, all contributors concur in defining surprise as a cognitive operation and as a component of emotion rather than as a pure emotion. Surprise results from expectations not being met and is therefore related to epistemicity. Linguistically, there does not exist an unequivocal marker of surprise. Surprise may be either described by surprise lexemes, which are often associated with figurative language, or it may be expressed by grammatical and syntactic constructions. Originally published as a special issue of Review of Cognitive Linguistics 13:2 (2015)

Book Synopsis Hiding the Guillotine by : Emmanuel Taïeb
Download or read book Hiding the Guillotine written by Emmanuel Taïeb and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hiding the Guillotine examines the question of state involvement in violence by tracing the evolution of public executions in France. Why did the state move executions from the bloody and public stage of the guillotine to behind prison doors? In a fascinating exploration of a grim subject, Emmanuel Taïeb exposes the rituals and theatrical form of the death penalty and tells us who watched, who participated in, and who criticized (and ultimately brought an end to) a spectacle that the state called "punishment." France's abolition of the death penalty in 1981 has long overshadowed its suppression of public executions over forty years earlier. Since the Revolution, executions attracted tens of thousands of curious onlookers. But, gradually, there was a shift in attitude and the public no longer saw this as a civilized pastime. Why? Combining material from legal archives, police files, an executioner's notebooks, newspaper clippings, and documents relating to 566 executions, Hiding the Guillotine answers this question. Taïeb demonstrates the ways in which the media was at the vanguard of putting an end to the publicity surrounding the death penalty. The press had ample reason to be critical: cities were increasingly being used for leisure activity and prisons for those accused of criminal activity. The agitation surrounding each execution, coupled with a growing identification with the condemned, would blur these boundaries. Ranked among the top hundred history books by the website, Café du Web Historizo, Hiding the Guillotine has much to impart to students of legal history, human rights, and criminology, as well as to American historians.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together selected papers from an interdisciplinary conference focused on effective and appropriate communication of science in the often-heated controversies characteristic of contemporary democracies. The forty essays represent cutting-edge work from rhetorical and communication theorists studying the practices and norms of public discourse and science communication, philosophers interested in the informal logic of everyday reasoning and in the theory of deliberative democracy, and science studies scholars examining the intersections between the social worlds of scientists and citizens. Topics include the theory and practice of public participation exercises involving experts and lay publics, communication techniques for conveying uncertainty, complexity and scale, pseudocontroversy and "manufactured doubt" about science, and the maintenance of trust between scientists and citizens.
