Book Synopsis The Disciplined Heart by : Caroline J. Simon
Download or read book The Disciplined Heart written by Caroline J. Simon and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1997-03-25 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often what passes for love is a product of self-deception and wishful thinking. Genuine love, according to philosopher Caroline J. Simon, must be based on knowledge of reality, and Christianity affirms that reality includes not just who people are but the unfolding story of who God intends them to be. Taking the use of narrative seriously, The Disciplined Heart draws on works of literature to display a Christian understanding of love in its various forms: love of self, love of neighbor, friendship, romantic love, and marital love. Using instances of love and its counterfeits in novels and short stories by such authors as Flannery O'Connor, Leo Tolstoy, George Eliot, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Simon constructs an account of love's joys and obligations that both charms and instructs. Learned, astute, and elegantly written, The Disciplined Heart is a groundbreaking work at the intersection of theology, philosophy, and literary analysis.

Book Synopsis Divine Discipline by : Rhonda Harrington Kelley
Download or read book Divine Discipline written by Rhonda Harrington Kelley and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-discipline is essential to success in all areas of life. Making the conscious choice to do what is morally right takes a great deal of strength. The source of this strength comes from God. Having learned the hard way that discipline requires training, Dr. Rhonda Harrington Kelley suggests a system of checks and balances for self-control. Noting her personal journey toward spiritual discipline, Kelley offers this thought-provoking, inspirational guide. Through self-motivation and control, the author encourages you to reap the rewards of leading a disciplined life. After years of struggling with her weight and other negative aspects of her life, Kelley concluded that she had the motivation for change but not a sincere desire to gain self-control. Her belief in God’s power to bring calm and purpose to some of life’s most uncontrollable situations helped change her life. More than just a self-help book, Divine Discipline: How to Develop and Maintain Self-Control offers specific guidelines for making positive lifestyle changes toward personal growth. Kelley provides valuable guidelines for nutrition, fitness, time management, and goal planning that highlight the importance of one’s internal resources by employing inner strengths. This second edition provides new information and encouragement for those seeking divine self-control. The biblical quotes come from the New American Standard Bible published by Lockman. Through discipline, introspection, and spiritual belief, Dr. Kelley leads the wayward soul to the bounty of the Holy Spirit. Esther Burroughs provides the foreword. A well-known Christian speaker and author, she is on the staff of the Southern Baptist Convention Home Mission Board in the evangelism division.

Download or read book The Heart of a Father written by Ken Canfield PH.D. and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every father has a hidden longing to see his children surpass him. To help him achieve this, Ken Canfield offers a three-part plan. First, a dad should examine his own heart. Next, he should take steps to improve the way he connects with his children. Lastly, he should take a longer range view and plan specifically for a lifetime of involved fathering. Canfield's plan addresses a father's past-a father should resolve his relationship with his own father in order to effectively build a relationship with his children. Canfield also explains how to build the four "walls" or dimensions, of fathering: involvement, awareness, consistency, and nurturing. He then supplies a plan for the future. From being a new father to being a grandfather, dads face challenges at each stage of their life. With the long-range perspective this book provides, fathers can anticipate and prepare for the changing situations they'll face. Based on years of careful research involving thousands of fathers, this book is a solid reference tool for dads.
Book Synopsis The Heart Is Unknown Country by : L. A. Rebhun
Download or read book The Heart Is Unknown Country written by L. A. Rebhun and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of love, specifically of mens and womens emotional roles vis-à-vis one another in Northeast Brazil; of how people form conjugal relationships in this region; and of the impact of rapid socioeconomic change on courtship, marriage, cohabitation, and infidelity. Rapid urbanization and expansion of the cash economy have transformed the region in a few decades. Among the transformations are shifts in how people conduct courtship, form marriages, view the proprieties of sexual behavior, and assess the proper social and economic roles of men and women. These changes have altered the relative importance of physical, economic, and emotional intimacy in conjugal relationships, transforming the nature of marriageonce defined as a largely economic relationshipinto a largely emotional relationship, as ideas of romance once associated with infidelity, concubinage, and courtship are increasingly attached to marriage. The book is largely based on interviews with men and women who talked about their often complicated love lives with wit and passion, and the book is rich in personal stories and quotations. Women were asked to discuss the nature of men and women, and men were asked to talk about women. Both sexes were questioned about their views on prostitution, concubinage, and promiscuity, as well as their definitions of love. Parents were asked for their views about marriage and child rearing (especially differences in raising boys and girls), their relations with their own parents, lovers, spouses, and friends, and their views on virginity and sexual propriety. The bluntness and articulateness of the informants about their motivations and experiences not only demonstrated that men and women viewed conjugal relationships very differently but enabled the author to specify and explore these differences in unusually interesting ways.
Book Synopsis The Dude's Guide to Manhood by : Darrin Patrick
Download or read book The Dude's Guide to Manhood written by Darrin Patrick and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the path to true masculinity—to an adventurous life of strength, purpose, and clarity. Didn’t we used to understand manhood? Wasn’t there a time once when it was clear and straightforward? Are we lost? Dudes, look around you: The trail we once traveled from boyhood to maturity is now so overgrown, it’s almost impossible to trace. Our vision is blurred, rendering the map that previous generations followed unreadable. Our compass needles are spinning in circles, making navigation impossible. We are stuck in dense, dangerous woods, and our communities—the wives, children, friends, and colleagues we could be influencing—are suffering as a result. It can be tempting to give up and, like so many men today, simply exist, but take heart: Now is not the time for men to abandon our quest. We can discover the path to true masculinity—to an adventurous life of strength, purpose, and clarity. In The Dude’s Guide to Manhood, pastor, author and dude Darrin Patrick charts a course back toward real manliness, mapping out a vision to help men find significance and influence in today’s broken, mixed-message culture. Revealing his own frailties and missteps, Patrick doesn’t preach at you but walks with you on a journey toward healing and wholeness. Filled with timeless wisdom, accessible insights and practical guidance, The Dude’s Guide to Manhood issues an encouraging and doable call to all men, whatever your age or stage. We need not settle for wandering aimlessly through our days, wounded, weak, and passive. Instead, we can get back on the trail, embrace our gifts while facing our imperfections, and trust the God of new beginnings to lead us into all that we are destined to become: forgiven, connected, determined, teachable, content, heroic, and so much more.

Book Synopsis Coming Full Circle by : Suzanne Crawford O'Brien
Download or read book Coming Full Circle written by Suzanne Crawford O'Brien and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coming Full Circle is an interdisciplinary exploration of the relationships between spirituality and health in several contemporary Coast Salish and Chinook communities in western Washington from 1805 to 2005. Suzanne Crawford O’Brien examines how these communities define what it means to be healthy, and how recent tribal community–based health programs have applied this understanding to their missions and activities. She also explores how contemporary definitions, goals, and activities relating to health and healing are informed by Coast Salish history and also by indigenous spiritual views of the body, which are based on an understanding of the relationship between self, ecology, and community. Coming Full Circle draws on a historical framework in reflecting on contemporary tribal health-care efforts and the ways in which they engage indigenous healing traditions alongside twenty-first-century biomedicine. The book makes a strong case for the current shift toward tribally controlled care, arguing that local, culturally distinct ways of healing and understanding illness must be a part of contemporary Native healthcare. Combining in-depth archival research, extensive ethnographic participant-based field work, and skillful scholarship on theories of religion and embodiment, Crawford O’Brien offers an original and masterful analysis of contemporary Native Americans and their worldviews.
