Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disciples of AEsculapius, Vol. 2 of 2 The arrangement was precisely that which could most be wished for; but further study was thought to be desirable, and so our incipient professor soon set off on a journey to Paris to the famous School Of Anatomy there. In Paris he attended the hospitals and the various courses Of lectures pertaining to medicine and surgery, continuing his studies until the autumn Of 1718, when he moved to Leyden in order to become one of the elect of the illustrious Boerhaave, the then commanding star of medical professors, and now in the full blaze Of his glory. To Boerhaave he carried the best Of all recommendations, a steady stream of patients, coming from Scotland to consult the master by the introduction of a pupil, who Obtained all the good wishes Of the master, and whose assiduity and perseverance were subjects of general admiration. In the year 1719 Alexander Monro returned to Edinburgh full Of life and vigour, a young man Of greatest promise, a young man placed in a most favourable position in the social ranks of medicine in a famous Old city; and, again, a young man who through the devotion Of an earnest, devoted, and trusting father had received advantages which had probably never before befallen any aspirant for medical honours in the metropolis of the North. The stars in their courses favoured this youth. He was the man wanted to found a school in Edinburgh - a school which should be a fair rival Of any other in the world, and Of which Paris and Leyden themselves need not be ashamed. This was his destiny, and he played his part to perfection. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disciples of AEsculapius, Vol. 1 of 2 A student as a boy, such he remained to the last day of his life, as ready to learn as he was to impart what he had learned. It has been remarked many times how plain he made abstruse subjects, and how willing he was to patiently explain the most elementary facts to any inquirers who sought his aid on matters of which he had made a life study. It was at Burrow Hill School, and afterwards while an articled pupil to Mr. Henry Hudson, of Somerby, that a love of antiquarian pursuits developed in him. The neighbourhood was rich in ancient remains, and Mr. Hudson was as willing to interest his pupil in antiquity, or the mysteries of electricity, as he was to introduce him to the first case Of small-pox the young student had seen. Mrs. Hudson pleaded that the introduction might be postponed until the lad was a trifle Older, but the doctor was resolute the sooner the boy saw such cases the better - and that was final. Master and pupil worked happily together; the pupil was drilled in medical observation and treat ment, and, taking kindly to his lessons, upon one occasion was left, in the absence of his eccentric master, to attend by himself to the wants of the patients. The book tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, the rebellion is betrayed, and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before, under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon. The original title was Animal Farm: A Fairy Story, but U.S. publishers dropped the subtitle when it was published in 1946, and only one of the translations during Orwell's lifetime kept it. Other titular variations include subtitles like “A Satire” and “A Contemporary Satire”. ----- The Art of War Sun Tzu Bestseller Book The Art of War The Art of War is traditionally attributed to an ancient Chinese military general known as Sun Tzu meaning “Master Sun”. Sun Tzu was traditionally said to have lived in the 6th century BC, but The Art of War's earliest parts probably date to at least 100 years later. Sun Tzu was a Chinese general, military strategist, and philosopher whose books have universal resonance even in the contemporary time. The Art of War has inspired Mao Zedong’s writings about Guerrilla warfare. Ho Chi Minh translated The Art of War for his generals to study. Sun Tzu’s Art of War is a widely acclaimed book on military strategy that has influenced and shaped the idea of Western and Eastern nations' military philosophy. It presents complete instructions on how to win battles and manage conflicts. The theories proposed in Art of War are extremely beneficial on the battleground and have been tried and tested by many successful military generals around the world. It is difficult to ascertain exactly when was this book written and many historians have ascribed it to different times. ----- The Lesser Key of Solomon "Samuel Liddell (8 or 11 January 1854 – 5 or 20 November 1918), born Samuel Liddell Mathers, was a British occultist. He is primarily known as one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a ceremonial magic order of which offshoots still exist. He became so synonymous with the order that Golden Dawn scholar Israel Regardie observed in retrospect that “the Golden Dawn was MacGregor Mathers." Mathers added the “MacGregor” surname as a claim to Highland Scottish heritage. He was a practicing vegetarian, or (according to some accounts) vegan, an outspoken anti-vivisectionist, and a non-smoker. It is known that his main interests were magic and the theory of war, his first book being a translation of a French military manual, Practical Instruction in Infantry Campaigning Exercise (1884). Mathers became increasingly eccentric in his later years as was noted by W. B. Yeats. ----- Metamorphosis Often cited as one of the most influential works of short fiction of the 20th century, Metamorphosis is widely studied in colleges and universities across the western world. Nobel Peace Prize winner Elias Canetti described it as “one of the few great and perfect works of the poetic imagination written..." 'One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin.'

By clicking on one of those titles you will be redirected to the beginning of that work, where you'll find a new TOC that lists all the chapters and sub-chapters of that specific work. ---- About Anthology: ----- Tetrabiblos Tetrabiblos, also known in Greek as Apotelesmatiká, and in Latin as Quadripartitum, is a text on the philosophy and practice of astrology, written in the 2nd century AD by the Alexandrian scholar Claudius Ptolemy. Ptolemy's Almagest was an authoritative text on astronomy for more than a thousand years, and the Tetrabiblos, its companion volume, was equally influential in astrology, the study of the effects of astronomical cycles on earthly matters. But whilst the Almagest as an astronomical authority was superseded by acceptance of the heliocentric model of the solar system, the Tetrabiblos remains an important theoretical work for astrology. ---- The Corpus Hermeticum This translation (taken From 'Thrice-Greatest Hermes: Studies In Hellenistic Theosophy And Gnosis, Volume 2'), includes the Pœmandres and some addresses of Hermes to disciples Tat, Ammon and Asclepius, which are said to have originated in the school of Ammonius Saccas, a Greek philosopher from Alexandria. ---- The Mystical Qabalah Dion Fortune's classic, The Mystical Qabalah, explores all aspects of the Qabalah, including the esoteric sciences of astrology and tarot, which form the basis of the Western Mystery Traditions. It provides a key to the practical working of this mystical system for both novice and initiates alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hermetica are a body of theological-philosophical texts written in late antiquity, but long believed to be much older. Their supposed author, Hermes Trismegistus, was thought to be a contemporary of Moses, and the Hermetic philosophy was regarded as an ancient theology, parallel to the received wisdom of the Bible. This first English translation based on reliable texts, together with Brian P. Copenhaver's comprehensive introduction, provide an indispensable resource to scholars in ancient philosophy and religion, early Christianity, Renaissance literature, and history, the history of science, and the occultist tradition in which the Hermetica have become canonical texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume two reveals the extraordinary diversity of ancient Roman religion. A comprehensive sourcebook, it presents a wide range of documents illustrating religious life in the Roman world - from the foundations of the city in the eighth century BC to the Christian capital more than a thousand years later. Each document is given a full introduction, explanatory notes and bibliography, and acts as a starting point for further discussion. Through paintings, sculptures, coins and inscriptions, as well as literary texts in translation, the book explores the major themes and problems of Roman religion, such as sacrifice, the religious calendar, divination, ritual, and priesthood. Starting from the archaeological traces of the earliest cults of the city, it finishes with a series of texts in which Roman authors themselves reflect on the nature of their own religion, its history, even its funny side. Judaism and Christianity are given full coverage, as important elements in the religious world of the Roman empire.
