Book Synopsis "Disassembled" Images by : Alexander Streitberger
Download or read book "Disassembled" Images written by Alexander Streitberger and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The canonical legacy of Allan Sekula in contemporary visual art “Disassembled” Images takes as a point of departure Allan Sekula’s productive approach of disassembling elements in order to reassemble them in alternative constellations. Some of the most pressing issues of our time, such as human labor in a globalized economy or the claim for radical democracy, are recurrent themes in Sekula’s oeuvre and are investigated by a wide range of experts in this book. Addressing a variety of artworks, both by Sekula and other artists, the collected essays focus on three crucial aspects within recent politically engaged art: collecting as a tool for representing folly and madness, the confrontation of the maritime space of ecological disasters and geopolitical processes with alternative models of solidarity, and what Sekula named “critical realism” as a reflective method in search of new social agencies and creative freedom. A text–image portfolio by Marco Poloni completes this profound reflection on Sekula’s influential legacy within contemporary visual art. Book Synopsis Disassembled Cities by : Elizabeth L. Sweet
Download or read book Disassembled Cities written by Elizabeth L. Sweet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the urban, political, and economic effects of contemporary capitalism as well being concerned with a collective analytic that addresses these processes through the lens of disassembling and reassembling dynamics. The processes of contemporary globalization have resulted in the commodification of various dimensions that were previously the domain of state action. This book evaluates the varying international responses from communities as they cope and confront the negative impacts of neoliberalism. In-depth case studies from scholars working in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia showcase how various cities are responding to the effects of neoliberalism. Chapters investigate and demonstrate how the neoliberal processes of dissembling are being countered by positive and engaged efforts of reassembly. From Colombia to Siberia, Chicago to Nigeria, contributions engage with key economic and urban questions surrounding the militarization of state, democracy, the rise of the global capital and the education of young people in slums. This book will have a broad appeal to academic researchers and urban planning professionals. It is recommended core reading for students in Urban Planning, Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, and Urban Studies.
Download or read book Ground Sea written by Hilde Van Gelder and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a world in which each individual has a fundamental right to be reborn. This idle dream haunts Hilde Van Gelder’s associative travelogue that takes Allan Sekula’s sequence Deep Six / Passer au bleu (1996/1998) as a touchstone for a dialogue with more recent artworks zooming in on the borderscape near the Channel Tunnel, such as those by Sylvain George and Bruno Serralongue. Combining ethnography, visual materials, political philosophy, cultural geography, and critical analysis, Ground Sea proceeds through an innovative methodological approach. Inspired by the meandering writings of W.G. Sebald, Javier Marías, and Roland Barthes, Van Gelder develops a style both interdisciplinary and personal. Resolutely opting for an aquatic perspective, Ground Sea offers a powerful meditation on the indifference of an increasingly divided European Union with regard to considerable numbers of persons on the move, who find themselves stranded close to Calais. The contested Strait of Dover becomes a microcosm where our present global challenges of migration, climate change, human rights, and neoliberal surveillance technology converge. Book Synopsis Patronage and Poetry in the Islamic World by : Jocelyn Sharlet
Download or read book Patronage and Poetry in the Islamic World written by Jocelyn Sharlet and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-13 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Panegyric poetry, in both Arabic and Persian, was one of the most important genres of literature in the medieval Middle East and Central Asia. Jocelyn Sharlet argues that panegyric poetry is important not only because it provides a commentary on society and culture in the medieval Middle East, but also because panegyric writing was one of the key means for individuals to gain social mobility and standing during this period. This is particularly so within the context of patronage, a central feature of social order during these times. Sharlet places the medieval Arabic and Persian panegyric firmly within its cultural context, and identifies it as a crucial way of gaining entry to and movement within this patronage network. This is an important contribution to the fields of pre-modern Middle Eastern and Central Asian literature and culture.

Book Synopsis Disassembly Automation by : Supachai Vongbunyong
Download or read book Disassembly Automation written by Supachai Vongbunyong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-23 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a number of aspects to be considered in the development of disassembly automation, including the mechanical system, vision system and intelligent planner. The implementation of cognitive robotics increases the flexibility and degree of autonomy of the disassembly system. Disassembly, as a step in the treatment of end-of-life products, can allow the recovery of embodied value left within disposed products, as well as the appropriate separation of potentially-hazardous components. In the end-of-life treatment industry, disassembly has largely been limited to manual labor, which is expensive in developed countries. Automation is one possible solution for economic feasibility. The target audience primarily comprises researchers and experts in the field, but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.

Download or read book Ubiquity written by Jacob W. Lewis and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its invention to the internet age, photography has been considered universal, pervasive, and omnipresent. This anthology of essays posits how the question of when photography came to be everywhere shapes our understanding of all manner of photographic media. Whether looking at a portrait image on the polished silver surface of the daguerreotype, or a viral image on the reflective glass of the smartphone, the experience of looking at photographs and thinking with photography is inseparable from the idea of ubiquity—that is, the apparent ability to be everywhere at once. While photography’s distribution across cultures today is undeniable, the insidious logics and pervasive myths that have governed its spread demand our critical attention, now more than ever.

Book Synopsis Intelligent Assembly and Disassembly 2001 by : Peter Kopacek
Download or read book Intelligent Assembly and Disassembly 2001 written by Peter Kopacek and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 2002 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid development observed in modern production systems is firmly connected with the development of new assembly and disassembly systems. One of the oldest forms of industrial production, assembly, and its twin area disassembly, have both enjoyed tremendous modernisation in the era of the Information Revolution. New enabling technologies, including prominent examples such as virtual CAD, Design for Assembly and Disassembly (DFAD), Robotic and Intelligent Assembly and Flexible Assembly (FA) are now becoming commonplace. This volume presents the papers from the 2nd IFAC Workshop on 'Intelligent Assembly and Disassembly - IAD 2001'. The colloquium highlighted the issues of IAD, showed the actual results of the research and development work, set the direction of future development, and analysed the possibility of introducing IAD into production processes. Including 3 invited papers, and 17 technical papers authored by researchers from across the globe, the papers cover important fields of product development such as product design, development of planning systems, simulation and modelling, as well as sessions on e-manufacturing and education.

Book Synopsis Mysterious Skin by : Santiago Fouz-Hernández
Download or read book Mysterious Skin written by Santiago Fouz-Hernández and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borrowing its title from Gregg Araki's 2005 film, in which the camera's contemplation of the male body encourages us to feel that body, and covering a broad span of subjects and films, "Mysterious Skin" offers a wider, more representative picture of the depiction of the male body in contemporary world cinemas than has hitherto been attempted. An international array of major experts explore the treatment of masculinity and the male body in the cinemas of Africa, Australia, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, North America, Spain, Taiwan and Vietnam, as well as Hollywood.Their common concern is to reveal how the representation of the male body is used in films to convey a country's anxieties about its national identity and history, as well as how it engages with questions of racial, sexual or gender politics. They discuss key actors, directors and films of these countries, from Ewan MacGregor in Peter Greenaway's "The Pillow Book", through the films of Wong Kar Wai, to Paul Hogan as Mick Dundee in "Crocodile Dundee". In so doing, "Mysterious Skin" also provides a strong overview of important cinema produced around the world in the last twenty years.
