Book Synopsis Eye on the Diamonds by : Terry Crawford-Browne
Download or read book Eye on the Diamonds written by Terry Crawford-Browne and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2012-09-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007 Terry Crawford-Browne published the explosive Eye On The Money. It was primarily an account of the international banking sanctions campaign against apartheid during the 1980s, but also dealt with the early stages of the now well-documented South African arms deal scandal. Eye On The Diamonds is a sequel to the earlier book and provides updated information on the uncovering of the scandal. Its purpose is to keep the arms deal saga and the venality of the war business in public focus. In 2008 Crawford-Browne was asked to lead a public interest application to the South African Constitutional Court after huge volumes of evidence confirmed how BAE and other arms companies paid massive bribes to politically well-connected members of the African National Congress - the so-called 'black diamonds' - to secure their contracts. His application forced President Jacob Zuma's reluctant appointment in October 2011 of a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the scandal. Eye On The Diamonds' focus on diamonds links the colonial and apartheid histories of South Africa with the close histories of Israel and Palestine. It demonstrates how De Beers, the South African originated company which dominated the diamond cartel for more than a century is fast losing control to far more ruthless Israeli players. Crawford-Browne suggests that the diamond trade, which is critical to the twenty-first century war business, makes every diamond a 'blood diamond'. Blood diamonds provide the ultimate money laundering opportunity for organised crime, while the Israeli war business thwarts efforts at peaceful resolution of conflict. Israel itself has become a 'promised land' for organised crime where assassinations, money laundering and other criminal activities are justified in the 'national interest'. Crawford-Browne shows in this well-researched and hard-hitting book that the international war business and the corruption it unleashes is completely out of control.

Download or read book Winning the War written by John B. Alexander, Ph.D. and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-second century historians will note that a new World War began on 9/11/2001. In reality, it began much earlier. Competing value systems and the lust for natural resources will precipitate an inevitable clash of civilizations. Currently, we face elusive foes-foes who play by other rules-and in fact, we are already engaged in brutal, truly asymmetric conflict with varied forms of fighting; terrorism is but an isolated part. The increasing number of polymorphic hostilities requires revolutionary and unconventional responses. Special operations are the norm. Nanoscale, biological, and digital technologies have transformed how we fight future wars. Tactical lasers that zap pinpoint targets at twenty kilometers are being developed, as is the millimeter-wave Active Denial System that causes intense pain to those exposed. The "Mother of all Bombs" has been dropped, as have thermobaric weapons that destroy caves and bunkers. Robots roam the battlefield while exotic sensors catalogue nearly every facet of our lives. Paralyzing electrical shock weapons are in the hands of police. Even phasers on stun are closer than you think. Winning the War details the technologies and concepts necessary to ultimately determine the outcome of this global conflict. Via realistic scenarios from recovering tourists kidnapped by terrorists, to bringing down drug cartels in the Amazon, and even preventing Armageddon in the Middle East, Winning the War provides an insider's view into how these futuristic weapons will be used and into the complexities of modern warfare. Bold and controversial measures are prescribed, including the essential nature of absolute domination of space. Winning the War makes clear that drastic and innovative actions will be necessary to ensure our national survival.

Book Synopsis Rocks, Ice and Dirty Stones by : Marcia Pointon
Download or read book Rocks, Ice and Dirty Stones written by Marcia Pointon and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The king of stones, valued since antiquity for their unrivalled hardness, diamonds today are both desired and deplored. Once faceted and polished they glitter on the fingers of brides-to-be and in the ornaments of the super-rich, but their extraction from some of the world’s poorest countries remains contentious. Immensely valuable for their size, diamonds can be easily hidden and transported, making them perfect contraband. Diamonds have been widely used in industry since the nineteenth century and have long been valued for their pharmaceutical and prophylactic properties. This entertaining and richly illustrated book examines the history of the diamond trade through the centuries from India and Brazil to South Africa and Europe and investigates what happens to diamonds once they reach the cutters and polishers. Marcia Pointon takes the reader on a unique tour of the ways in which the quadrahedron diamond shape has inspired design, architecture, and painting, from the symbolism of medieval manuscripts to modern-day graffiti. She questions the etiquette of engagement rings, and she reminds us why and how lost, stolen, or cursed diamonds create suspense in so many classic novels and films. This compelling and fascinating account of the history of sparklers around the world will appeal to all who covet, as well as all who despise, the unparalleled brilliance and glitter of the diamond.

Book Synopsis Diamonds in Peace and War by : Ingrid J. Tamm
Download or read book Diamonds in Peace and War written by Ingrid J. Tamm and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Diamonds in Peace and War" is the latest word on conflictdiamonds and their contribution to the wars of middle Africa. The report grew out of a conference sponsored by the World Peace Foundation, the Project on Justice, the Carr Center, and the WPF Program on Intrastate Conflict at the Kennedy School of Government in late 2001. Although theconflict diamond problem is but a small part of the much larger world-wide trade in peaceful diamonds, it is the destructive and corrosive part. Tamm places conflict diamonds within this larger context, lays out the technical issues involved, and explores all aspects of the Kimberly Process ? theunparalleled negotiating effort by industry, NGOs, and national governments that produced a standard method of differentiating clean from dirty diamonds. It also helped to produce pending U.S. legislation. Using diamonds to import arms and sponsor war is less likely now that theKimberly Process has produced a near-final agreement. "Diamonds in Peace and War" is the place to learn all about this remarkably successful initiative of conflict prevention and conflict reduction.
Book Synopsis Diamonds and Conflict by : Arthur V. Levy
Download or read book Diamonds and Conflict written by Arthur V. Levy and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mining and sales of diamonds by parties to participants of armed conflicts, notably in Africa, are regarded as a significant factor fuelling such hostilities. These diamonds, labelled 'conflict diamonds', make up an estimated 3.7 per cent to 15 per cent of the value of the global diamond trade. In response to public pressure to halt the trade of conflict diamonds and due to the persistence of diamond-related conflicts, governments and multi-lateral organisations have taken diplomatic action to combat the trade. Several international policy making forums, including the UN, have addressed the problem, and the international diamond industry and non-governmental organisations have proposed a range of reforms and legislative initiatives to halt the illicit trade. This new book examines the diamond-related African conflicts, the various methods that are being researched and used to 'tag' diamonds with microscopic markings, and the efforts taken to regulate the marketing and exporting of diamonds.

Book Synopsis From Blood Diamonds to the Kimberley Process by : Dr Franziska Bieri
Download or read book From Blood Diamonds to the Kimberley Process written by Dr Franziska Bieri and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1990s, several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused world attention on the issue of conflict diamonds which funded wars, massive death, and refugee crises across Central and West Africa. Several governments, NGOs, and key industry players engaged in negotiations under the so-called Kimberley Process (KP). A voluntary global agreement came into effect leading to a substantial decline in illicit diamond trade. Despite its importance in international affairs, the KP remains understudied in academia. Franziska Bieri's book provides the first comprehensive account of the KP and is the first to reveal how NGOs have become critical actors in their own right, possessing the ability to directly influence policies and to participate in the decision making and the implementation of global agreements. In developing this argument, Bieri explains: why the NGO campaign to raise awareness was successful; why a rapid and comprehensive resolution on such a complex global problem was possible; how the tripartite negotiations between states, NGOs, and industry developed during the implementation of the agreement, which is an on-going process. Based on extensive personal interviews with prominent campaigners, leading bureaucrats, and industry officials, hundreds of KP publications, official UN documents, industry news, and NGO reports, this timely book allows for a much needed engagement in contemporary debates about the campaign against conflict diamonds, the Kimberley Process, and the themes defining today's global governance arena.

Book Synopsis Experiencing Alice Cooper by : Ian Chapman
Download or read book Experiencing Alice Cooper written by Ian Chapman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiencing Alice Cooper: A Listener’s Companion takes a long overdue look at the music and stage act of rock music’s self-styled arch-villain. A provocateur from the very start of his career in the mid-1960s, Alice Cooper, aka Vince Furnier, son of a lay preacher in the Church of Jesus Christ, carved a unique path through five decades of rock’n’roll. Despite a longevity that only a handful of other artists and acts can match, Alice Cooper remains a difficult act and artist to pin down and categorize. During the last years of the 1960s and the heydays of commercial success in the 1970s, Cooper's groundbreaking theatricality, calculated offensiveness, and evident disregard for the conventions of rock protocols sowed confusion among his critics and evoked outrage from the public. Society’s watchdogs demanded his head, and Cooper willingly obliged at the end of each performance with his on-stage self-guillotining. But as youth anthem after youth anthem - “I’m Eighteen,” “School’s Out,” “Elected,” “Department of Youth”—rang out in his arena concerts the world over and across airwaves, fans flocked to experience Cooper’s unique brand of rock. Critics searched for proper descriptions: “pantomime,” “vaudeville,” “retch-rock,” “Grand Guignol.” In 1973 Cooper headlined in Time magazine as “Schlock Rock’s Godzilla.” In Experiencing Alice Cooper: A Listener’s Companion, Ian Chapman surveys Cooper’s career through his twenty-seven studio albums (1969-2017). While those who have written about Cooper have traditionally kept their focus on the stage spectacle, too little attention has been paid to Cooper’s recordings. Throughout, Chapman argues that while Cooper may have been rock’s most accomplished showman, he is first and foremost a musician, with his share of gold and platinum albums to vouch for his qualifications as a musical artist.
