Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of Disability and Sexuality by : Russell Shuttleworth
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Disability and Sexuality written by Russell Shuttleworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a much-needed holistic overview of disability and sexuality research and scholarship. With authors from a wide range of disciplines and representing a diversity of nationalities, it provides a multi-perspectival view that fully captures the diversity of issues and outlooks. Organised into six parts, the contributors explore long-standing issues such as the psychological, interpersonal, social, political and cultural barriers to sexual access that disabled people face and their struggle for sexual rights and participation. The volume also engages issues that have been on the periphery of the discourse, such as sexual accommodations and support aimed at facilitating disabled people's sexual well-being; the socio-sexual tensions confronting disabled people with intersecting stigmatised identities such as LGBTBI or asexual; and the sexual concerns of disabled people in the Global South. It interrogates disability and sexuality from diverse perspectives, from more traditional psychological and sociological models, to various subversive and post-theoretical perspectives and queer theory. This handbook examines the cutting-edge, and sometimes ethically contentious, concerns that have been repressed in the field. With current, international and comprehensive content, this book is essential reading for students, academics and researchers in the areas of disability, gender and sexuality, as well as applied disciplines such as healthcare practitioners, counsellors, psychology trainees and social workers.
Book Synopsis Urban Claims and the Right to the City by : Julian Walker
Download or read book Urban Claims and the Right to the City written by Julian Walker and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Claims and the Right to the City explores how contested processes of urban development, and the rights of city dwellers, are understood and interpreted from the perspective of women and men working, in different ways, at the grassroots in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, and London, UK. In doing so, it represents the grounded voices of authors whose work and lives mean that they engage, on a daily basis, with issues related to housing and spatial rights, and identity struggles around race, gender, disability, sexuality, citizenship and class.

Book Synopsis Occupying Disability: Critical Approaches to Community, Justice, and Decolonizing Disability by : Pamela Block
Download or read book Occupying Disability: Critical Approaches to Community, Justice, and Decolonizing Disability written by Pamela Block and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the concept of "occupation" in disability well beyond traditional clinical formulations of disability: it considers disability not in terms of pathology or impairment, but as a range of unique social identities and experiences that are shaped by visible or invisible diagnoses/impairments, socio-cultural perceptions and environmental barriers and offers innovative ideas on how to apply theoretical training to real world contexts. Inspired by disability justice and “Disability Occupy Wall Street / Decolonize Disability” movements in the US and related movements abroad, this book builds on politically engaged critical approaches to disability that intersect occupational therapy, disability studies and anthropology. "Occupying Disability" will provide a discursive space where the concepts of disability, culture and occupation meet critical theory, activism and the creative arts. The concept of “occupation” is intentionally a moving target in this book. Some chapters discuss occupying spaces as a form of protest or alternatively, protesting against territorial occupations. Others present occupations as framed or problematized within the fields of occupational therapy and occupational science and anthropology as engagement in meaningful activities. The contributing authors come from a variety of professional, academic and activist backgrounds to include perspectives from theory, practice and experiences of disability. Emergent themes include: all the permutations of the concept of "occupy," disability justice/decolonization, marginalization and minoritization, technology, struggle, creativity and change. This book will engage clinicians, social scientists, activists and artists in dialogues about disability as a theoretical construct and lived experience.

Book Synopsis Development with a Body by : Andrea Cornwall
Download or read book Development with a Body written by Andrea Cornwall and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'We used to talk about development with a human face. We should be talking about development with a body' Arit Oku-Egbas, African Regional Sexuality Resource Centre, Nigeria Sex and sexuality have always had a place at the heart of the development agenda - from concerns regarding population and environment, to practices in education and efforts for protecting reproductive health and rights. Yet this agenda has largely focused on negative dimensions of sexuality - disease, risk, violation - rather than positive aspects, including rights to sexual fulfillment, wellbeing and pleasure. The shift towards a rights-based approach to development has brought the human rights dimensions of sexuality into clearer view, and consequently the need to address discriminatory laws and violations of the human rights of those whose sexual identity and practices diverge from dominant sexual orders/norms. This book offers compelling insights into contemporary challenges and transformative possibilities of the struggle for sexual rights. It combines the conceptual with the political, and offering inspiring examples of practical interventions and campaigns that emphasize the positive dimensions of sexuality. It brings together reflections and experiences of researchers, activists and practitioners from Brazil, India, Nigeria, Peru, Serbia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK and Zambia. From political discourse on sex and masculinity to sex work and trafficking, from HIV and sexuality to struggles for legal reform and citizenship, the authors explore the gains of creating stronger linkages between sexuality, human rights and development.
Book Synopsis Labelling migrants who sell sex. by : J. Lima de Pérez
Download or read book Labelling migrants who sell sex. written by J. Lima de Pérez and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Migrants who sell sex’ is a vast category which includes a variety of ever-changing and fluid experiences. These experiences, however, are often a secondary consideration when it comes to categorizing said migrants. Adapted from the homonymous publication-based doctoral thesis defended by the author at Ghent University on 30 June 2015, ‘Labelling migrants who sell sex’ explores the construction, manipulation and imposition of the labels of ‘victim of trafficking’ and ‘migrant sex worker’ and their consequences. Through a case study of Brazilian migrants in Spain and Portugal, this book delves into the motivations of both receiving/developed and sending/developing countries which shape their construction of the labels of migrants working in the sex industry and their application. It considers issues such as the varying definitions of these labels in national legislation and policies, the effect of the manipulation of labels on trafficking statistics, the problems faced by migrants who sell sex outside of the trafficking context and the treatment given to those labelled as (potential) victims of trafficking before and after reaching their country of destination.
