Book Synopsis Internationalization of Law by : Marcelo Dias Varella
Download or read book Internationalization of Law written by Marcelo Dias Varella and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides an overview of how international law is today constructed through diverse macro and microprocesses that expand its traditional subjects and sources, with the attribution of sovereign capacity and power to the international plane (moving the international toward the national). Simultaneously, national laws approximate laws of other nations (moving among nations or moving the national toward the international) and new sources of legal norms emerge, independent of states and international organisations. This expansion occurs in many subject areas, with specific structures: commercial, environmental, human rights, humanitarian, financial, criminal and labor law contribute to the formation of post national law with different modes of functioning, different actors and different sources of law that should be understood as a new complexity of law.

Book Synopsis Contemporary challenges and alternatives to international criminal justice by : Renata Barbosa
Download or read book Contemporary challenges and alternatives to international criminal justice written by Renata Barbosa and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The system of international criminal justice was established in response to gross human rights violations committed during World War II. Despite its development over the past seven decades, challenges and critiques remain unresolved or have subsequently emerged, particularly in the context of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Key issues include amnesties, immunities, controversial acquittals, non-cooperation, interpretative fragmentation, and cultural clashes. Criticism emerged as a reaction to the perception of impunity and the system’s underachievement. It is important to reflect on the extent to which such challenges are inherent to the system and whether they can be overcome. What is the state of international criminal justice today? What impact have these challenges had on the system’s integrity, currency, and credibility? To what extent can we prevent or remedy them? This volume brings together major contributions to the 8th AIDP Symposium for Young Penalists which was organised by the AIDP Young Penalists Committee and convened on 10 and 11 June 2021 in telematic mode, hosted by the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University.

Book Synopsis Nanomaterials: Ecotoxicity, Safety, and Public Perception by : Mahendra Rai
Download or read book Nanomaterials: Ecotoxicity, Safety, and Public Perception written by Mahendra Rai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environment is prone to suffer pollution and toxic insult from generations of nanomaterials as well from accidental releases during production, transportation, and disposal operations. The NMs could interact with and cause adverse biological effects at cellular, subcellular, and molecular levels. Assessing potential environmental/ecological risks requires quality information on transport and fate of nanoparticles in the environment, exposures and vulnerabilities of organisms to the nanomaterials and standard methods for assessing toxicity for aquatic or terrestrial organisms and human health. The systematic risk characterization and evaluation of the safety of nanomaterials require a multidisciplinary approach and convergence of knowledge and efforts from researchers and experts from toxicology, biotechnology, materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering, and other branches of life sciences. Although studies are beginning to appear in the literature addressing the toxicity of various nanomaterials and their potential for exposure, at this stage definitive statements regarding the impacts of nanomaterials on human health and the environment remain sketchy requiring an increased level of precautions with regard to nanomaterials, as has happened with other emerging contaminants and technologies (e.g., biotechnology). The need for an increased level of understanding the perception of risk and of benefits will vary and is likely to influence public, regulatory, and non-governmental activities regarding risk and benefit evaluations. Systematic identification and assessment of the risks posed by any new technology are essential. A prudent, integrated, and holistic approach is required to develop best practices based on the scientific understanding about what we know and what we don’t know but need to know. Nanomaterials addresses key issues of ecotoxicological actions and effects of nanomaterials on life and environment, their threats, vulnerability, risks, and public perception. The readers learn to read bad news objectively and think about and search for ecological ‘green’ solutions to current environmental and ecological problems with blue, grey, brown, and red shades for building a sustainable ecosystem. It shows how this molecular terrain is a common ground for interdisciplinary research and education that will be an essential component of science, engineering and technology in the future. The book is divided into three sections. Section I includes general topics related to ecotoxicity of nanomaterials to microbes, plants, human and environment. Section 2 incorporates risks generated by the use of nanomaterials. Section 3 discusss safety issues and the public.
Book Synopsis Urban Growth and the Circular Economy by : S. Syngellakis
Download or read book Urban Growth and the Circular Economy written by S. Syngellakis and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented at the 1st International Conference on Urban Growth and the Circular Economy that was held in Alicante, Spain the papers included in this book focus on the continuing and rapid growth of cities and their regions of influence and how that has led to the need to find new solutions which allow for promoting their sustainable development. The quest for the Sustainable City has until recently focused on the efficient use of resources with the application of technical advances giving rise to the definition of SMART Cities. The economic model emphasised however is still “linear” in the sense that the design and consumption follows the pattern of extraction of natural resources, manufacturing, product usage and waste disposal. The continuous growth of urban population has recently given rise to the emergence of a new model which responds better to the challenges of natural resource depletion as well as waste management. This model has been called the “circular economy”. The circular economy is a recent concept based on the reuse of what up to now has been considered wastes, reintroducing them into the productive cycle. The objective of the circular economy is to reduce consumption and achieve savings in terms of raw materials, water and energy, thus contributing to the preservation of resources in order to reach sustainable development. One of the most important of these resources is water which is becoming a scarce commodity in an ever expanding world whose population demands a better standard of living. Water is required for agricultural purposes as well as by industry, in addition to its use by the general population. The recycling of water is an essential component of the circular economy. There is no possibility for the success of a long term economic policy without addressing the problems of natural resources and environmental pollution, which will affect the reuse of materials and products. The current market economy based on a linear model from resource extraction, manufacturing, consumption and waste disposal, has not proved a long term suitable solution, in spite of the substantial efforts made in reducing its environmental impacts. This is largely due to the continuous population growth, in a society that demands high standards of living, thus requiring an ever increasing share of natural resources.
Book Synopsis Energy Law in Brazil by : Yanko Marcius de Alencar Xavier
Download or read book Energy Law in Brazil written by Yanko Marcius de Alencar Xavier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the energy-law situation in Brazil. It focuses on three specific energy sectors: oil, natural gas and biofuel. The decision to concentrate on these areas takes into account the role that these energy sectors play in the economic, political and legal systems in Brazil, as well as the fact that they are the primary subjects of current discussions surrounding economic regulation in the country. The book, composed of thematic chapters authored by specialized legal researchers, analyzes the different aspects of the oil, gas and biofuels industry, starting with an introduction and technical points and followed by a discussion of the legal issues. It also considers the different legal areas used to examine the aforementioned energy sectors, such as regulatory law, environmental law, tax law, international law, among others. The book will serve as a valuable guide for researchers interested in understanding Brazilian energy law, and at the same it time presents the state of the art of studies carried out in Brazil.
Book Synopsis Circular Economy by : Suzana Borschiver
Download or read book Circular Economy written by Suzana Borschiver and published by Brasport. This book was released on 2024-03-20 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of Circular Economy, which is the central theme of this book, is based on the preservation and increase of natural capital by controlling finite stocks and balancing the flow of renewable resources. Both sustainability and Circular Economy concepts go together and share the objective of mitigating the negative externalities mentioned here. The strategies to find the possible answers go through several actions. An economic model that implies changes in the way of thinking and acting in a society requires the training of people and professionals focused on its application. The publication of this book was a way of delivering the results of this work to the society, placing its individuals as agents of social transformation. In this context, the chapters are varied purposefully, so that topics pertinent to Circular Economy can be discussed, but not consolidated in one work alone so far. If we strive for a more resilient economy, a fairer society, and a healthier environment, walking the path is needed. We hope that this reading can elucidate the subject and awaken a critical sense of what attitudes or strategies can get us started. The book aims to reach from readers specialized in the subject, professors, high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, to the curious, beginners in the world of Circular Economy and new business models.
Book Synopsis Legal Aspects of the Recovery of Areas Degraded by Mining in the International Seabed by : Antonio Elian Lawand Junior
Download or read book Legal Aspects of the Recovery of Areas Degraded by Mining in the International Seabed written by Antonio Elian Lawand Junior and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an innovative approach to the recovery of areas degraded by international seabed mining, one that considers the feasibility of a standard that would allow mining in these areas in apparent antinomy with their other potential present and future uses. The book begins by identifying and explaining the legal norms that allow mining in these areas and the rights and obligations in mining exploitation concomitant to other uses of them, based on an analysis of mining operations’ duty of Recovery of Degraded Areas. It reveals an antinomy in international law, namely the compatibility of degraded areas and their various present and future uses with the mining of the international seabed. The freedom to mine these areas could destroy the least impacted biome on the planet and undermine the international law system represented by the Cultural Heritage of Mankind and the Third United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (“UNCLOS III”). Recovery of Degraded Areas is an obligation in mining and, as such, requires structural changes in the reading of UNCLOS III; recognizing international roles other than those related to sovereignty; projecting the law into the future; and rereading it in light of international environmental law and its instruments.
