Book Synopsis Hurry Walter, There Is a Possum in the Hen House by : Cricket Webb
Download or read book Hurry Walter, There Is a Possum in the Hen House written by Cricket Webb and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book was created over the years of true stories of what happened to a family that some will say no way could happen. I promise you; there is no way this stuff could ever be made up! One person in the family loved the stories and could always tell them as they happened and pretend to be each person in every occurrence. The family had encouraged this person for years to write the stories into a book so others could laugh as well. It seemed all stories you could buy in this day and time were criminal fast pace stories, sad stories, love stories, murders, trials; well, you get the idea. It was time for a humorous book that was about real people and real stories that were honestly true. You will notice the family has a huge heart for animals and people in need, and sometimes their huge heart for animals could cause them lack of sleep but they never seemed to mind to help with some of God’s chores. They were laboring, working-class people who were as honest as the day is long. They kept their nose in their own business even though they may not understand some of the stuff that was going on with their neighbors. It still was none of their business. What was their business however, was taking care of grandkids, great-grandkids, and all the animals that made up the zoo there on the farm and all the fun stuff that came along with it. They were not ashamed to tell their stories. It happens to everyone; some people want to act like it never happens to them. I promise you at some time in your life, you will step into some dog poop.

Download or read book Higher Ground written by Greg J. Duncan and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2007-01-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s, growing demands to end chronic welfare dependency culminated in the 1996 federal "welfare-to-work" reforms. But regardless of welfare reform, the United States has always been home to a large population of working poor—people who remain poor even when they work and do not receive welfare. In a concentrated effort to address the problems of the working poor, a coalition of community activists and business leaders in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, launched New Hope, an experimental program that boosted employment among the city's poor while reducing poverty and improving children's lives. In Higher Ground, Greg Duncan, Aletha Huston, and Thomas Weisner provide a compelling look at how New Hope can serve as a model for national anti-poverty policies. New Hope was a social contract—not a welfare program—in which participants were required to work a minimum of thirty hours a week in order to be eligible for earnings supplements and health and child care subsidies. All participants had access to career counseling and temporary community service jobs. Drawing on evidence from surveys, public records of employment and earnings, in-depth interviews, and ethnographic observation, Higher Ground tells the story of this ambitious three-year social experiment and evaluates how participants fared relative to a control group. The results were highly encouraging. Poverty rates declined among families that participated in the program. Employment and earnings increased among participants who were not initially working full-time, relative to their counterparts in a control group. For those who had faced just one significant barrier to employment (such as a lack of access to child care or a spotty employment history), these gains lasted years after the program ended. Increased income, combined with New Hope's subsidies for child care and health care, brought marked improvements to the well-being and development of participants' children. Enrollment in child care centers increased, and fewer medical needs went unmet. Children performed better in school and exhibited fewer behavioral problems, and gains were particularly dramatic for boys, who are at the greatest risk for poor academic performance and behavioral disorders. As America takes stock of the successes and shortcomings of the Clinton-era welfare reforms, the authors convincingly demonstrate why New Hope could be a model for state and national policies to assist the working poor. Evidence based and insightfully written, Higher Ground illuminates how policymakers can make work pay for families struggling to escape poverty.

Download or read book Wolf written by Jim Harrison and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Harrison’s first novel—a walk on the wild side from “a force of nature in American letters” (The Seattle Times). The New York Times–bestselling author of thirty-nine books of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry—including Legends of the Fall, Dalva, and Returning to Earth—Jim Harrison was one of our most beloved and acclaimed writers, adored by both readers and critics. Praised as “a raunchy, funny, swaggering, angry, cocksure book,” Wolf tells the story of a man who abandons Manhattan after too many nameless women and drunken nights, to roam the wilderness of northern Michigan, hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the rare wolves that prowl that territory (The New York Times Book Review). “When you turn the last page and Swanson’s voice stops, you want to flip back and keep listening.” —The Examiner

Book Synopsis Africana Studies by : James L. Conyers
Download or read book Africana Studies written by James L. Conyers and published by VNR AG. This book was released on 1997 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known variously as African studies, black studies, African American studies, Afro-American studies, and Africology, the academic study of the African diaspora as a holistic discipline is a relatively new phenomenon. University programs have been created with reference to a disciplinary matrix, retarding the development of appropriate theory and methods throughout Africana studies. Fifteen leaders in the field of Africana studies provide the conceptual framework for establishing the field as a mature discipline. The focus is on four basic areas: administration and organizational structure; disciplinary matrix; Africana womanism; and cultural aesthetics. The work examines both the theory and the method of scholars in African and African-diaspora studies.
Download or read book Commandos written by John Parker and published by Headline. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commandos were Britain's first-ever special forces, formed in 1940 using volunteers from all three services. After the war, Commando units of the Royal Marines engaged in virtually every military scenario involving British troops from 1945 to the present day. They became the elite of the British 'ready-to-go' forces, capable of deploying at a moment's notice to any trouble spot in the world. In this latest book in John Parker's acclaimed series on British military activity, dramatically recalled in their own words by men who were there, he recounts the major events in the 60-year history of British Commando forces.
