Book excerpt: Improvements in organic electronic materials could lead to novel device applications, ranging from large-area, flexible displays to light weight, plastic electronics. Progress on these applications would benefit from development of low-cost, aqueous, solution-based fabrication techniques for organic semiconductors. Supramolecular self-assembly enables molecules to organize in complex structures through non-covalent interactions. The nanoscale structure and aggregation of organic semiconductors influence conductivity, charge mobility and luminescence. We developed three approaches to enhance the performance of organic semiconductors through molecular self-assembly. The first uses a liquid crystalline (LC) template to mediate electrochemical polymerization of poly(3,4-ethyldioxythiophene) (PEDOT), a conducting polymer used for hole injection in organic light emitting diodes (OLED). Monomers were polymerized in the cylindrical, hydrophobic cores of a hexagonal, lyotropic LC formed by a non-ionic amphiphile in water, The templated, conducting polymer films exhibited anisotropic optical properties and increased conductivity as a direct result of the nanoscale, self-organized structure of the template. Another approach was used to control molecular order by preparing organic semiconductors that are themselves liquid crystalline. We developed a novel series of triblock oligo(phenylene vinylene) (OPV) amphiphiles that form thermotropic and lyotropic LC mesophases. The self-organized, layered structure of these mesophases influences aggregation of OPV, enhancing fluorescence in the liquid crystalline state compared with disordered films. These OPV-amphiphiles are the first example of a water-soluble oligo(phenylene vinylene) that can self-organize into aligned, well-ordered, highly fluorescent films. In a third system, a triblock, dendron rod-coil (DRC) molecule containing a quaterthiophene segment was prepared and its self-assembly and electronic properties investigated. In non-polar solvents, this molecule formed high aspect ratio, supramolecular nanowires containing stacked oligo(thiophene) segments. These self-assembled nanowires formed conductive films that were aligned by an electric field. Using these three systems, we demonstrate how nanoscale templating and self-assembly can enhance the performance of thiophene- and phenylene vinylene-based organic semiconductors.

Small molecule organic semiconductors serve as model systems for the active materials in organic electronic devices. Applications such as organic solar cells and light-emitting diodes rely on organic polymers and small molecules for their properties but the performance of these organic devices could still yet be improved compared to the inorganic-based devices. The aim of this work is to study different structure-property relationships in model organic systems to gain a better understanding for designing organic electronic material. Other spectroscopic and structural techniques are used to complement the spatial mapping capability of AFM, providing a more comprehensive view of the fundamental processes governing organic semiconductor films. First, self-assembled oligothiophenes with different surface functionalization are studied for the role humidity has on the electronic properties of a monolayer film. In-situ AFM and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that the water vapor is found to change the electronic properties of films with hydrophilic surface termination groups leaving hydrophobic films unaffected. Next, different indigo small molecules are self-assembled at the air-water interface into crystalline structures. The role of intermolecular interactions is found to play a critical role in the indigo crystal morphology. The self-assembled indigo crystals are studied by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy revealing the presence of H-aggregate formation during self-assembly. Further studies of the electronic properties of the indigo crystal films are performed using electrical AFM techniques and field-effect transistors. Finally, a scheme for the fabrication of flat field-effect transistors using graphene photolithography is presented. Graphene field-effect transistors are fabricated and tested providing a platform to study more accurately thin organic semiconducting films. This dissertation demonstrates the advantage of studying model systems of organic semiconductors with nanoscale precision with the aim of designing better performing organic electronic devices.

This has brought tremendous benefits for the industry including lower cost per transistor, more computing power and higher speed. However, it has been recently observed that the scaling of devices is approaching fundamental (i.e. atomic scale) and economic (i.e. cost per fabrication facility) limits, in large part because traditional lithography is facing substantial challenges for printing the shrinking features while maintaining a reasonable cost. In response to this urgent need, researchers are actively searching for alternative patterning approaches as the next generation lithography. Potential solutions such as extreme ultraviolet lithography, electron beam lithography, and multiple patterning lithography have attracted much attention from the lithography community. However, each one of these solutions has its own drawbacks, such as extremely high cost or low throughput. Among these solutions, block copolymer directed self-assembly (DSA) stands out due to its low cost, high throughput, well-controlled sub-20 nm features, and experimentally demonstrated potential to scale below 14 nm. Block copolymers are unique soft materials that can self-assemble through microphase separation into various periodic nanostructures such as cylinders, spheres and lamellas, driven by the incompatibility between the different blocks. The feature size of these nanostructures is dependent on the molecular weight of the block copolymers and therefore not limited by the same factors that limit optical lithography such as ultraviolet light wavelength. In addition, the self-assembly could be controlled by a simple thermal annealing process, which significantly reduces the cost and improves the throughput. Among all the varieties of nanostructures, the cylindrical self-assembled patterns are especially suitable for patterning contacts and vias in integrated circuits (ICs). This dissertation focuses on the application of block copolymer DSA for contact hole patterning in ICs. This work first demonstrates the flexible control of aperiodic DSA patterns using small physical guiding templates, using both experiments and computational simulations. This is followed by the first patterning example of memory and random logic circuit contacts using DSA. To enable practical technology adoption, I introduce an alphabet approach that uses a minimal set of small physical templates to pattern all contact configurations on integrated circuits. This work also illustrates, through experiments, a general and scalable template design strategy that links the DSA material properties to the technology node requirements. Last but not least, the dissertation introduces a method to reduce DSA defectivity by using sub-DSA-resolution Assist Features (SDRAFs).
