Book excerpt: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) has become one of the main candidates for the next generation of mobile land and satellite communication systems. CDMA is based on spread spectrum techniques, which have been used in military applications for over half a century. Only recently, however, has it been recognised that spread spectrum techniques, combined with some additional steps, can provide higher capacity and better flexibility for the mobile cellular radio communications. Code Division Multiple Access Communications comprises a set of contributions from the most distinguished world scientists in the field. These papers review the basic theory and some of the most important problems related to spread spectrum and CDMA. The topics covered centre on the information theory aspects of CDMA; interference suppression and performance analysis. The material presented in this book summarises the main problems in modern CDMA theory and practice and gives a solid starting point for studying this complex and still challenging field. As such Code Division Multiple Access Communications is essential reading for all researchers and designers working in mobile communication systems and provides an excellent text for a course on the subject.

Book excerpt: Radio systems capable of localization have emerging applications in homeland security, law enforcement, emergency response, defense command and control, multi-robot coordination and vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian collision avoidance. In fact, high resolution localization is vital for many applications, including: traffic alert, emergency services, e.g., indoor localization for firefighters, and battlefield command and control. These systems promise to dramatically reduce society's vulnerabilities to catastrophic events and improve its quality of of life. While work this important area is progressing, limited resources are available to support graduate students and researchers in this important area. Specifically, a limited number of books has been published in this area covering selected subjects. This comprehensive handbook offers gaps of available localization books presenting in-depth coverage from fundamentals of coordinates to advanced application examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broadband wireless communications field is growing at an explosive rate, stimulated by a host of important emerging applications ranging from 3G, 4G and wireless LAN. Wideband CDMA and CDMA2000 will be used for 3G. OFDM+CDMA might be a good choice for 4G, CDMA overlay will possibly be used for new-generation broadband wireless LAN. For system planners and designers, the projections of rapidly escalating demand for such wireless services present major challenges and meeting these challenges will require sustained technical innovation on many fronts. The text of this book has been developed through years of research by the author and his graduate students at the University of Hong Kong. The aim of this book is to provide a R&D perspective on the field of broadband wireless communications by describing the recent research developments in this area and also by identifying key directions in which further research is needed. As a background, I presume that the reader has a thorough understanding of digital communications and spread spectrum/CDMA. The book is arranged into 13 chapters. In chapter 1, some key specifications of 3G WCDMA are described and discussed. These techniques include channel coding, rate matching, modulation and spreading, power control, cell search, transmit diversity, soft-handoff, and so son. In Chapter 2, the coherent RAKE reception of Wideband CDMA signals with complex spreading is considered. A dedicated pilot channel, which is separate from data channels, is used for the purpose of channel estimation.

Book excerpt: This article considers a quaternary direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) communication system with asymmetric quadrature phase-shift-keying (AQPSK) modulation for unequal error protection (UEP) capability. Both time synchronous and asynchronous cases are investigated. An expression for the probability distribution of the multiple-access interference is derived. The exact bit-error performance and the approximate performance using a Gaussian approximation and random signature sequences are evaluated by extending the techniques used for uniform quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) and binary phase-shift-keying (BPSK) DS-CDMA systems. Finally, a general system model with unequal user power and the near-far problem is considered and analyzed. The results show that, for a system with UEP capability, the less protected data bits are more sensitive to the near-far effect that occurs in a multiple-access environment than are the more protected bits.Wang, C.-W. and Stark, W.Jet Propulsion LaboratoryQUADRATURE PHASE SHIFT KEYING; BINARY PHASE SHIFT KEYING; ASYMMETRY; CODE DIVISION MULTIPLE ACCESS; PHASE SHIFT KEYING; MULTIPLE ACCESS; PROTECTION; RELIABILITY ANALYSIS

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Multicarrier CDMA Overlay for Ultra-wideband Wireless Communications Submitted by Wong Tat Tung for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2003 Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is widely considered to offer an innovative solution for future short-range high-speed wireless communications. In this study, the use of multi-carrier direct sequence code division multiple access (MC-DS-CDMA) overlay with both transmitter and receiver filtering is suggested for UWB applications, as an alternative to the conventional carrier-less approach. The main contribution of the study is to provide an analytical framework to illustrate the feasibility of the use of MC-DS- CDMA in UWB wireless communications. A literature review in Chapter 1 provides an overview of UWB technology and explains why MC-DS-CDMA is considered to be a feasible candidate for UWB communications. In Chapter 2, the factors of characterized large number multiple propagation paths and the existence of strong narrowband systems are taken into account for the construction of system model. Numerical expressions for performance evaluation are formulated and the system analysis is conducted with the assumption of random spreading code and Gaussian approximation. The performances of various receiving strategies are compared extensively. Results in Chapter 3 show that the proposed MC- DS-CDMA UWB system is capable of using spectrum already allocated to established services without causing noticeable interference to the existing users, and that pre- combining a minimum mean square error receiver with selective-maximal combining provides much better performance than a receiver made up of notch filter in cascade with code matched correlator or a code matched correlator receiver. A discussion of the significance of these results and conclusions are provided in Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 respectively. Book excerpt: Analysing and designing reliable and fast wireless networks requires an understanding of the theory underpinning these systems and the engineering complexities of their implementation. This text describes the underlying principles and major applications of high-speed wireless technologies, with emphasis on ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless systems, 3G long term evolution, and 4G mobile networks. Key topics such as cross-layer optimization are discussed in detail and various forms of UWB, including multi-band OFDM UWB, are covered. Recent research developments are described before identifying the scope and direction for future research. The overlay problem (interference problem) in UWB is discussed, and the author aims to illustrate that OFDM is not the best wireless access technique for high speed transmission. Covering the latest technologies in the area, this book will be a valuable resource for graduate students of electrical and computer engineering as well as practitioners in the wireless communications industry.

Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive coverage of mobile data networking and mobile communications under a single cover for diverse audiences including managers, practicing engineers, and students who need to understand this industry. In the last two decades, many books have been written on the subject of wireless communications and networking. However, mobile data networking and mobile communications were not fully addressed in a unified fashion. This book fills that gap in the literature and is written to provide essentials of wireless communications and wireless networking, including Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN), Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), and Wireless Wide Area Networks (WWAN). The first ten chapters of the book focus on the fundamentals that are required to study mobile data networking and mobile communications. Numerous solved examples have been included to show applications of theoretical concepts. In addition, unsolved problems are given at the end of each chapter for practice. (A solutions manual will be available.)After introducing fundamental concepts, the book focuses on mobile networking aspects. Four chapters are devoted on the discussion of WPAN, WLAN, WWAN, and internetworking between WLAN and WWAN. Remaining seven chapters deal with other aspects of mobile communications such as mobility management, security, cellular network planning, and 4G systems.A unique feature of this book that is missing in most of the available books on wireless communications and networking is a balance between the theoretical and practical concepts. Moreover, this book can be used to teach a one/two semester course in mobile data networking and mobile communications to ECE and CS students.*Details the essentials of Wireless Personal Area Networks(WPAN), Wireless Local Are Networks (WLAN), and Wireless Wide Area Networks (WWAN)*Comprehensive and up-to-date coverage including the latest in standards and 4G technology*Suitable for classroom use in senior/first year grad level courses.
