Book excerpt: To the extent that the wind field is close to geostrophic, the thermal wind is a good approximation of the vertical wind shear (vertical variation of the horizontal wind). And since the thermal wind is proportional to the horizontal temperature gradient, the possibility exists of determining it from satellite radiance observations. Several different methods are developed for retrieving thermal winds directly from the horizontal gradients of satellite radiance observations. The methods are applied to the determination of thermal winds in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere over the White Sands Missile Range area. A special series of about 30 concurrent sets of radiance observations from the NOAA-4 VTPR instrument and wind shears from radiosonde observations, distributed throughout one year, is used for these tests. The results obtained with these direct methods are compared with results obtained with: (1) a traditional method, in which temperature profiles are first retrieved from the satellite radiances and the thermal winds are then obtained from the horizontal gradients of the retrieved temperatures, and (2) a linear regression between observed radiance gradients and observed wind shears.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By applying the thermal wind equation to the radiative transfer equation, one can derive the vertical wind shear from horizontal gradients of radiances measured by satellite. The vertical resolution of the wind shear can be optimized by using linear combinations of radiance gradients. A theoretical study was conducted to determine the optimal pressure intervals over which wind shears could be resolved when using weighting functions associated with the SSH sounder of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, and those associated with the TOVS instrument package on the TIROS-N/NOAA series of operational satellites. Two distinct computational approaches are presented and their respective results are summarized. (Author).

Book Synopsis Estimation of Vertical Wind Shear from Infrared and Microwave Radiances by : Hans A. Panofsky

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear regression estimates of radiosonde observed vertical wind shears between mandatory levels were made, using radiance gradients obtained via the TIROS-N satellite as predictors in a pilot experiment based on about 200-500 observations. The best results were obtained for shears between 850 mb and a level in the upper troposphere, such as 300 mb. Results were similar for 850-400 or 850-200 mb shears, but notably inferior for 850-500 mb shears. The linear correlation coefficients between estimated and smoothed observed components of shear was about 0.70, corresponding to about 50 percent explained variance in independent test samples. Somewhat higher explained variances (about 0.60) were achieved in a limited trial where the data-set was stratified according to subjectively-judged trajectory curvature. Estimates of the wind itself in the upper troposphere were nearly as skillful as the best shear results. Overall, with the possible exception of curvature-stratified estimates in clear regions, both wind and wind shear estimates are not likely to be superior to methods that generate RMS wind errors of order 5m/s. Most of the information was contributed by the linear combination of microwave channel 2 minus microwave channel 3. Some additional information may be obtainable from the infrared (HIRS-2) channels 3, 4 and 5 (especially 5). (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind data have been analyzed to produce frequencies of occurrence of slant wind shear with respect to surface wind speed, time of day, vertical temperature gradient and wind shear direction differences. Slant wind shear (SWS) is a measurement that more closely approximates the shear encountered by an aircraft on takeoff or landing. It is computed as the wind shear between a higher level wind (in this study, 60 m) and the surface separated by a horizontal distance equivalent to that which an aircraft would traverse in descending or ascending that height. Additional study was also completed on the specification of slant wind shear along the runway through the use of an offset towersurface site system.
