Experiences from the first receiver prototypes for the third generation cellular systems form the basis of this book. Most of the issues are directly related to the early proposals of European and Japanese standardization organizations. For example, the chip rate was originally set to 4. 096 Mcps in a wide-band CDMA channel. I have kept that number in the book in most of the examples although it has been later changed to 3. 84 Mcps. I hope that the readers will accept that and the possible other incompabilities to the latest specifications. At least in the research phase the changes even in the most essential requirements are definitely not a rare incident and IC designers should be able to react and modify their designs as soon as they can.

They require fewer off-chip components which reduces the overall cost compared to other architectures. Cellular chipsets targeting emerging cellular standards such as 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) need to support tens of FDD and TDD frequency bands, and therefore have to use SAW-less direct-conversion receivers. Because of their superior linearity and noise compared to their active counterparts, passive mixers have become essential components in modern direct-conversion receivers. In this dissertation we investigate the linearity of passive mixer based front-ends, especially 2nd order non-linearity which is very challenging in frequency duplex (FDD) SAW-less direct-conversion receivers. We also devise a methodology to choose the optimal mixer size for noise and linearity at reasonable power consumption. The direct interaction between the low noise amplifier and the passive mixer in SAW-less receivers makes it necessary to characterize the impedance of the passive mixer. In this work we analyze both the input and output impedance of passive mixer based front-ends using switched-capacitor techniques to account for transient effects that are not captured in other analyses reported in literature. We successfully derive closed form equations that can be used to accurately estimate the passive mixer impedance. Finally, we present a complete system level design of a multiband LTE direct-conversion receiver. Starting from the 3GPP standard specifications, all the receiver performance requirements including filtering and linearity are presented. This also involved a theoretical analysis of the correction factors needed to relate two-tone based linearity specifications to those of modulated carriers. Without correction factors, linearity specifications based on 2-tone tests become very challenging and may result in unnecessary over-design. For the first time for LTE standard, we used simulations to derive all the correction factors for all LTE bandwidth cases, and verified them using measurement results. We finally present the complete receiver line-up and compare simulation and measurement results of the receiver signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

The advantages of the direct Conversion Receiver (DCR) such as the elimination of image spurious response, good selectivity, low power consumption and small size make it attractive in applications such as paging receivers. These applications are, however, at frequencies up to 450 MHz and previously results without hardware details for the 2 GHz band have been reported. This work presents results from a practical study of a DCR and its subsections, namely, power splitter, branch coupler hybrid, coupled lines band-pass filter, low-pass filter, balanced mixer and oscillator. Useful design equations, graphs and a software tool named ÀP(gamma,omega)' are presented for the design of the passive and active elements. The lumped element design of these circuits is taken into consideration looking ahead to possible Monolithic Microwave integrated Circuits (MMIC) applications. Small- and large-signal models are derived for the frequency conversion components; a dual-gate GaAs MESFET and a Schottky beam-lead diode. The large signal behaviour of the two mixers is very good with 1dB compression gain at 7 and 4.8 dBm, and third order intercept point at 40 and 46 dBm, for the dual-gate FET and the diode mixer respectively. The DCR overall performance is analysed with the aid of the Èesof-Omnisys' simulator. The system is based on measured figures of the individual subcircuits. The input is 50mu s bit duration GMSK modulated signal. Typical values for the signal-to-noise ratio is 10 to 12 dBm for 10-3 bit error rate. The receiver can tolerate amplitude and phase mismatches of 3% and 5 degrees respectively, as well as +-1.2 kHz local oscillator drift. The dynamic range is 80dB. The performance of the DCR fits well with the DECT specification.
