Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diphtheria and Its Associates The subject of Diphtheria has been one of deep interest to me since the days of my pupilage, and has occupied active attention in each of the four editions of my systematic work on Diseases of the Throat as they have appeared at intervals since 1878. The present essay is based mainly on a course of lectures recently delivered, for the purpose of establishing a landmark at an important era in the history of diphtheria, and of emphasising the desirability of assimilating the teachings of bacteriology to the purposes of practical medicine. In other words, to indicate the necessity for the scientific expert and the clinician to work together as colleagues, and not as rivals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Diphtheria The following treatise is founded partly upon the study of diphtheria in public and private practice, partly upon information obtained in the course of an inquiry into the causes, symptoms, and treatment of the disease, made for the Privy Council, in the spring of 1859. In the progress of this investigation I visited several districts in which diphtheria then prevailed, both for the purpose of observing the disease and also of ascertaining the result of the experience of those provincial practitioners who had been most extensively engaged in its treatment. From these gentlemen I received the most efficient aid in the prosecution of my inquiry, and I gladly take this opportunity to express my sense of their kindness, and of the great value of the information with which they supplied me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Personal Experience in the History of Diphtheria In the general use of antiseptics the important question arises, whet we can with safety, when the entire system has been subjected to the poi son of diphtheria, introduce within the circulation a sufficient quantity of the disinfectants to correct the evil and save the life of the patient. When the blood has been poisoned, and its constituent properties de stroyed as to their nutritive value, the introduction of all antiseptics and disinfectants possible cannot restore lost vitality and save life. But, where the injury is only partial, it is possible, by the combined agency of anti septics, nutriment, and stimulants, to repair the damage and turn the scale in the direction of health. In all grave cases of diphtheria there exists invariably more or less anorexia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diphtheria, Its Prevention, Restriction and Suppression A teacher developed diphtheria from passing the night in a room in which three weeks before a fatal case had occurred. A child developed diphtheria after putting on the clothing worn by a child which had died of diphtheria two months before. In a number of isolated dwellings diphtheria developed nearly a year after previous outbreaks without there being any apparent possibility of a new infection taking place from the outside. I have met with a number of cases where the infected bedding or clothing has undoubtedly been the source of the infection. - From American System of Practical Medicine, Loomis-Thompson. Disinfection Of Houses. A very wholesome practice that bids fair to become an established custom is the disinfection of a rented house before a new family moves into it. This is done, now, where a case of very contagious disease, say smallpox, or diphtheria, has been known to exist; but how can we feel sure that the house we are about to move into and live in has not had in it an unrecognized or a suppressed case of measles, scarlet fever, or tuberculosis or typhoid fever? Disinfection, after these diseases is of the highest importance. Then, again, there are those diseases that are not fatal, perhaps, but, being communicable, may become certainly afflictions, nuisances. This precaution therefore should be demanded of every landlord by those who are planning to rent the house. - Public Health, Michigan. These methods are not presented as original. They have been selected from those described in the numerous articles on the subject, written by those of the most extensive experience. The author is especially indebted to the very exhaustive treatise on the subject of diphtheria in Ziemssen's Cyclopaedia of Medicine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diphtheria, Its Symptoms and Treatment The Lectures are dogmatical in tone, be cause they were addressed to students; and I believe dogmatism to be essenn'al for success fld student-teaching. I endeavoured to mks them practical in regard of diagnosis and treat ment, because they were delivered to a clinical class. The of the cases are few, partly because the majority of the patients were seen in private, and partly because I have found that students are more confused than instructed.
