Download or read book Mist written by Miguel de Unamuno and published by Aris and Phillips Hispanic Cla. This book was released on 2014 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mist (Niebla), published in 1914, is one of Miguel de Unamuno's key works; a truly Modernist work of Europe-wide significance which aims to shatter the conventions of fiction, using the novel as a vehicle for exploration of philosophical themes. The plot revolves around the character of Augusto, a wealthy, intellectual and introverted young man and his love affair with Eugenia, which eventually ends in heartbreak. Augusto decides to kill himself, but decides that he needs to consult Unamuno himself, who had written an article on suicide which Augusto had read. When Augusto speaks with Unamuno, the truth is revealed that Augusto is actually a fictional character whom Unamuno has created. Augusto is not real, Unamuno explains, and for that reason cannot kill himself. Augusto asserts that he exists, even though he acknowledges internally that he doesn't, and threatens Unamuno by telling him that he is not the ultimate author. Augusto reminds Unamuno that he might be just one of God's dreams. Augusto dies and the book ends with the author himself debating to himself about bringing back the character of Augusto. He establishes, however, that this would not be feasible. Following on from his translation of Abel Sanchez , John Macklin's edition provides a much needed new English translation, alongside the Spanish text, together with a substantial introduction.

But dying for the exiles is not on Aubrey's to-do list. Using her gift as a Jumper, Aubrey leaps between bodies to escape relentless shape-shifting hunters. Only, shedding her skin is not enough. Download or read book Bilingual Youth written by Kim Potowski and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-16 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume represents a variety of portraits of what happens when families attempt to raise children in Spanish while living in English-speaking societies. Aided by the foregrounding chapter by Suzanne Romaine about language and identity and the afterword by Carol Klee that ties together many issues brought up throughout the collection, the reader gains a more complete understanding of the variables that contribute to Spanish bilingualism in English-speaking societies, and by extension a more complete understanding of the dynamic nature of bilingualism in general. This volume, the first of its kind, brings together an impressive array of sociolinguistic environments while keeping the two languages constant. We hope that it marks the beginning of comparative analyses of bilingualism, acquisition outcomes, and identity construction across environments that share the same languages, but where important disparities exist in the sociolinguistic landscapes.
Book Synopsis Building on Strength by : Ana Celia Zentella
Download or read book Building on Strength written by Ana Celia Zentella and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2005-09-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an exciting new perspective on language socialization in Latino families. Tackling mainstream views of childhood and the role and nature of language socialization, leading researchers and teacher trainers provide a historical, political, and cultural context for the language attitudes and socialization practices that help determine what and how Latino children speak, read, and write. Representing a radical departure from the ways in which most educators have been taught to think about first language acquisition and second language learning, this timely volume: introduces the theories and methods of language socialization with memorable case studies of children and their families; highlights the diversity of Latino communities: offers important insights into the ways in which children learn to speak and read by negotiating overlapping and/or conflicting cultural models; and suggests universal practices to facilitate language socialization in multilingual communities, including applications for teachers.
Book Synopsis The Castilian Conspiracy (second edition) by : Allan Tépper
Download or read book The Castilian Conspiracy (second edition) written by Allan Tépper and published by TecnoTur LLC. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1925, the Royal Spanish Academy (Real Academia Española) betrayed its protégé, the Castilian language, which has always been —and continues to be— the most widely used Spanish language used worldwide. After 14 properly named editions of its Dictionary and 433 years after the publication of the first Castilian Grammar book, the Royal Spanish Academy removed the proper name from the cover of the Dictionary, as part of a plot where Francisco Franco would later become a co-conspirator. Since 1978, the Royal Spanish Academy has been acting in violation of the Spanish Constitution and has been disrespecting the national heritage. The Castilian Conspiracy reveals the uncensored truth about the most widely used Spanish language. Through personal studies and anecdotes, quotations, historical facts, little-know rules, and unique observations, author Allan Tépper unfolds while he proposes improvements for the language and its speakers. Now, the second edition has even more proof than before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Blind Salmon engages in Julia Wong Kcomt's characteristically unflinching plumbing of the human body and traces fanged emotions with sticky precision, exploring mothering, multilinguality, and madness. Tusán writer Julia Wong Kcomt’s sixth collection of poetry, A Blind Salmon is her first full-length collection available in English. Written while she was living in Buenos Aires, the collection crosses borders between Berlin, Buenos Aires, Chepén, Tijuana, and Vienna. It takes up sameness and difference, shot through with desert sand. In these poems, Wong Kcomt renders homage to writers such as the Peruvian poet and visual artist Jorge Eduardo Eielson, who died in Milan as she was writing them. She fingers the filmy line between poetry and narrative prose to build a lyrical menagerie all her own.
