Book Synopsis Applications of X-ray Computed Tomography in the Geosciences by : Florias Mees
Download or read book Applications of X-ray Computed Tomography in the Geosciences written by Florias Mees and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2003 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a technique that allows non-destructive imaging and quantification of internal features of objects. X-ray CT reveals differences in density and atomic composition and can therefore be used for the study of porosity, the relative distribution of contrasting solid phases and the penetration of injected solutions. In this book, various applications of X-ray CT in the geosciences are illustrated by papers covering a wide range of disciplines, including petrology, soil science, petroleum geology, geomechanics and sedimentology.

Book Synopsis Tortuosity and Microstructure Effects in Porous Media by : Lorenz Holzer
Download or read book Tortuosity and Microstructure Effects in Porous Media written by Lorenz Holzer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents a thorough look at tortuosity and microstructure effects in porous materials. The book delivers a comprehensive review of the subject, summarizing all key results in the field with respect to the underlying theories, empirical data available in the literature, modern methodologies and calculation approaches, and quantitative relationships between microscopic and macroscopic properties. It thoroughly discusses up to 20 different types of tortuosity and introduces a new classification scheme and nomenclature based on direct geometric tortuosities, indirect physics-based tortuosities, and mixed tortuosities (geometric and physics-based). The book also covers recent progress in 3D imaging and image modeling for studying novel aspects of tortuosity and associated transport properties in materials, while providing a comprehensive list of available software packages for practitioners in the community. This book is a must-read for researchers and students in materials science and engineering interested in a deeper understanding of microstructure–property relationships in porous materials. For energy materials in particular, such as lithium-ion batteries, tortuosity is a key microstructural parameter that can greatly impact long-term material performance. Thus, the information laid out in this book will also greatly benefit researchers interested in computational modeling and design of next-generation materials, especially those for sustainability and energy applications.
Book Synopsis Multiphase Flow in Permeable Media by : Martin J. Blunt
Download or read book Multiphase Flow in Permeable Media written by Martin J. Blunt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrocarbon production, gas recovery from shale, CO2 storage and water management have a common scientific underpinning: multiphase flow in porous media. This book provides a fundamental description of multiphase flow through porous rock, with emphasis on the understanding of displacement processes at the pore, or micron, scale. Fundamental equations and principal concepts using energy, momentum, and mass balance are developed, and the latest developments in high-resolution three-dimensional imaging and associated modelling are explored. The treatment is pedagogical, developing sound physical principles to predict flow and recovery through complex rock structures, while providing a review of the recent literature. This systematic approach makes it an excellent reference for those who are new to the field. Inspired by recent research, and based on courses taught to thousands of students and professionals from around the world, it provides the scientific background necessary for a quantitative assessment of multiphase subsurface flow processes, and is ideal for hydrology and environmental engineering students, as well as professionals in the hydrocarbon, water and carbon storage industries.

Book Synopsis Rock Physics of Unconventional Reservoirs, volume II by : Qiaomu Qi
Download or read book Rock Physics of Unconventional Reservoirs, volume II written by Qiaomu Qi and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-10-07 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unconventional resources with commercial interest in the world mainly include heavy oils, shales, coalbed methane, and tight gas sands. The production and development of these resources has changed the global energy supply pattern. Quantitative interpretation of geophysical data in the exploration, well-logging, and engineering development of unconventional resources requires a comprehensive understanding of physical properties of rocks and their relationships. The research of rock physics provides an interdisciplinary treatment of physical properties, whether related to geological, geophysical, or geomechanical methodologies. The development of new rock physics methods is essential when integrating core, well-log, seismic data to improve the accuracy of formation evaluation and reservoir characterization. The composition, internal structure, and thermodynamic environment of reservoir rocks are complex and vary with different regions. This becomes particularly evident for unconventional reservoirs with strong macro- and micro-scopic heterogeneities. The diversity of exploration targets and complexity of reservoir characteristics pose great challenges to the applicability of existing rock physics experiments and theories. There are potential risks in directly using existing empirical relations and physical models to guide geophysical interpretation since spurious results may occur. Therefore, it is imperative to explore more applicable rock physics methods according to the petrophysical nature of actual reservoirs.
