Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer that imbibes human characteristics is considered to have a digital personality. The character is akin to real-life human with his/her distinguishing characteristics such as history, morality, beliefs, abilities, looks, and sociocultural embeddings. It also contains stable personality characteristics; fluctuating emotional, cognitive, SOAR technology, and motivational states. Digital Personality focuses on the creation of systems and interfaces that can observe, sense, predict, adapt to, affect, comprehend, or simulate the following: character based on behavior and situation, behavior based on character and situation, or situation based on character and behavior. Character sensing and profiling, character-aware adaptive systems, and artificial characters are the three primary subfields in digital personality. Digital Personality has attracted the interest of academics from a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, human-computer interaction, and character modeling. It is expected to expand quickly as technology and computer systems become more and more intertwined into our daily lives. Digital Personality is expected to draw at least as much attention as Affective Computing. The goal of affective computing is to enable computers to comprehend both spoken and nonverbal messages from people, use implicit body language, gaze, speech tones, and facial expressions, etc. to infer the emotional state and then reply appropriately or even show affect through interaction modalities. More natural and seamless human-computer connection would be the larger objective. Users will benefit from a more individualized experience as a result. Additionally, this will affect how well the user performs since they will have the assistance of the robots to do their jobs quickly and effectively. This book provides an overview of the character dimensions and how technology is aiding this area of study. It offers a fresh portrayal of character from several angles. It also discusses the applications of this new field of study.

Book excerpt: "Digital Personality is defined as any computing that incorporates the human character within its context. The character is the individual person with all of his/her defining or describing features. This includes stable personality traits, variable affective, cognitive and motivational states as well as history, morals, beliefs, skills, appearance, and sociocultural embeddings, to name a few. In practical terms, depending on the application context, Digital Personality is a branch of advance research that deals with the design of systems and interfaces that can observe, sense, predict, adapt to, affect, understand, or simulate the following: character based on behaviour and situation, behaviour based on character and situation, or situation based on character and behaviour. Digital Personality can be divided into three main research modules: character sensing and profiling, character-aware adaptive systems, and artificial characters. Since the introduction of the term "Digital Personality" captured the attention of researchers from diverse research fields ranging from HCI, character modelling, to Psychology. Digital Personality is envisioned to be a rapidly growing field, as technologies and computer systems are becoming ubiquitously integrated into our daily life. This raised the need for a seamless, natural user interface to support daily users. This is reflected in the vast amount of research conducted in the context of user-aware and adaptive interfaces over the past years. Digital Personality will exhibit similar importance to that of the well-established Affective Computing field. Affective Computing aims to allow the machine to understand the users' verbal and nonverbal communications. For instance, use implicit facial expressions, body postures, gaze, and voice tones to infer the emotional state, as well as, responding accordingly or even exhibiting affects through the interaction modalities. The greater goal would be more seamless natural human-computer interaction. This will provide users a better personalized experience. Further, this will influence the performance of the user, where they will have the support of the machines to achieve their tasks in the most efficient way. This book is the first of a kind in introducing Digital Personality. It provides an overview of the character dimensions and how state-of-the-art technologies would accommodate such a research field. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital objects, in their simplest form, are data. They are also a new kind of industrial object that pervades every aspect of our life today—as online videos, images, text files, e-mails, blog posts, Facebook events.Yet, despite their ubiquity, the nature of digital objects remains unclear. On the Existence of Digital Objects conducts a philosophical examination of digital objects and their organizing schema by creating a dialogue between Martin Heidegger and Gilbert Simondon, which Yuk Hui contextualizes within the history of computing. How can digital objects be understood according to individualization and individuation? Hui pursues this question through the history of ontology and the study of markup languages and Web ontologies; he investigates the existential structure of digital objects within their systems and milieux. With this relational approach toward digital objects and technical systems, the book addresses alienation, described by Simondon as the consequence of mistakenly viewing technics in opposition to culture. Interdisciplinary in philosophical and technical insights, with close readings of Husserl, Heidegger, and Simondon as well as the history of computing and the Web, Hui’s work develops an original, productive way of thinking about the data and metadata that increasingly define our world.

Book excerpt: "Instantly engaging and eminently accessible . . . . an enlightening and cautionary exploration of an increasingly intrusive aspect of modern society." —Booklist While the Internet can enhance well-being, Elias Aboujaoude has spent years treating patients whose lives have been profoundly disturbed by it. Part of the danger lies in how the Internet allows us to act with exaggerated confidence, sexiness, and charisma. Aboujaoude dubs this new self our “e-personality” and argues that its traits are too potent to be confined online. Offline, too, we’re becoming impatient, unfocused, and urge-driven. Virtually You draws from Aboujaoude’s personal and professional experience to highlight this new phenomenon. The first scrutiny of the virtual world’s transformative power on our psychology, Virtually You demonstrates how real life is being reconfigured in the image of a chat room, and how our identity increasingly resembles that of our avatar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 13 years between the publication of the original edition of the handbook and this second edition have been marked by memorable growth in psychotherapy integration. The original classic was the first compilation of the early integrative approaches and was hailed by one reviewer as "the bible of the integration movement." In the interim, psychotherapy integration has grown into a mature, empirically supported, and international movement. This second edition provides a state-of-the-art, comprehensive description of psychotherapy and its clinical practices by leading proponents. In addition to updates of all of the chapters, the new edition features: (1) eight new chapters covering topics such as cognitive-analytic therapy, integrative psychotherapy with culturally diverse clients, cognitive-behavioral analysis system, and blending spirituality with psychotherapy, (2) an entirely new section with two chapters on assimilative integration, (3) updated reviews of the empirical research on integrative and eclectic treatments, (4) chapter guidelines that facilitate comparative analyses and ensure comprehensiveness, and (5) a summary outline to help readers compare the integrative approaches. Blending the best of clinical expertise, empirical research, and theoretical pluralism, the revision of this "integration bible" will prove invaluable to practitioners, researchers, and students alike.

Individual Differences and Personality aims to describe how and why personality varies among people. Unlike books that focus on individual theorists, this book focuses on current research and theory on the nature of personality and related individual differences. The book begins by discussing how personality is measured, the concept of a personality trait, and the basic dimensions of personality. This leads to a discussion of the origins of personality, with descriptions of its developmental course, its biological causes, its genetic and environmental influences, and its evolutionary function. The concept of a personality disorder is then described, followed by a discussion of the influence of personality on life outcomes in relationships, work, and health. Finally, the book examines the important differences between individuals in the realms of mental abilities, of beliefs and attitudes, and of behavior. - Presents a scientific approach to personality and related individual differences, as well as theory and research on the fundamental questions about human psychological variation - New edition presents findings from dozens of new research studies of the past six years - Includes new chapter on vocational interests and a revised chapter on personality disorders reflecting DSM-5 formulation - Contains streamlined descriptions of measurement concepts and heritability research - Includes various boxes containing interesting asides that help to maintain the student's attention
