Book excerpt: This practical handbook evolved over several years of hands-on design work on various digital filter systems. It is intended for both FPGA design engineers as well as engineering students. It provides a rich source of useful practical information as well as a sound theoretical basis for the understanding of most digital filters - away from the traditional mathematical approach. The basics of DSP are also introduced carefully, including, frequency domain of digital signals, negative frequencies, frequency translation, complex numbers, images, aliasing, z-domain etc. The main purpose is to provide a professional guidance to filter implementation in FPGA hardware, taking into account the available resources and speed. The level of detail goes right down to hardware registers and hardware computations. It provides many diagrams for direct implementation. In particular, it visualises the use of filters for rate conversion with a unique approach using the polyphase wheel model. To avoid clutter, It does not provide HDL code as it assumes the designer can code once they are sure what to do. The book also stresses on developing self-learning through several examples of MATLAB commands at the conclusion of almost every chapter. Many of these examples are based on real experience at work and are highly intuitive.

In fact it is the key performance of the filters, which made DSP with FPGAs so popular. Such filters have two important roles to play, namely, signal separation and signal restoration. When a signal is buried in noise, then filters perform signal separation. On the other hand, signal restoration done by the filters when they are distorted. The entire book is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 is introductory. It deals with the Digital Signal Processing, its applications, for example Radars, VHDL introduction, FPGA applications and advantages. Previous work carried out in the design of signal processing system using FPGA by various researchers is presented in the form of literature survey, in Chapter 2. Two topics of paramount importance and which supports the book work is: signal processing system based on FPGA using VHDL language. Chapter 3 includes brief architecture of FPGA: ALTERA and XILINX. Chapter 4 deals with the present work which explains the design of Digital filter(FIR/IIR) Filter with the FPGA for different applications. Results and discussions are mentioned in Chapter 5
