Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative case for historical ambiguity in architecture by one of the field's leading theorists Conceptions of modernity in architecture are often expressed in the idea of the zeitgeist, or "spirit of the age," an attitude toward architectural form that is embedded in a belief in progressive time. Lateness explores how architecture can work against these linear currents in startling and compelling ways. In this incisive book, internationally renowned architect Peter Eisenman, with Elisa Iturbe, proposes a different perspective on form and time in architecture, one that circumvents the temporal constraints on style that require it to be "of the times"—lateness. He focuses on three twentieth-century architects who exhibited the qualities of lateness in their designs: Adolf Loos, Aldo Rossi, and John Hejduk. Drawing on the critical theory of Theodor Adorno and his study of Beethoven's final works, Eisenman shows how the architecture of these canonical figures was temporally out of sync with conventions and expectations, and how lateness can serve as a form of release from the restraints of the moment. Bringing together architecture, music, and philosophy, and drawing on illuminating examples from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Lateness demonstrates how today's architecture can use the concept of lateness to break free of stylistic limitations, expand architecture's critical capacity, and provide a new mode of analysis.

Book excerpt: Even in her very early work, Zaha Hadid made innovative use of graphic techniques such as penetration, distortion, curvature, strongly reduced perspectives, to portray her architectural designs from a refreshing new angle. In this way her unmistakeable concepts of architectural space originated, and it is no surprise that the London architect makes full use of the full range of possibilities afforded by today's electronic design tools to create her inimitable forms. This present publication documents the most important of her recent projects, revealing how Zaha Hadid has risen to the digital challenge. Patrik Schumacher teaches at the Architectural Association in London.

Book excerpt: Following on from the successful book "Natural Born CAADesigners: Young American Architects", this book takes a look at the most recent architectonic developments in the Mediterranean countries, where architects have up to now been strongly influenced by the archaeologically significant environment and their classical architectural inheritance. How do young architects in Italy, France, Spain and Greece react to the new digital age? The electronic tools give them the chance to free themselves from the burden of tradition, to explore fascinating opportunities in their architecture. This book provides a colourful and concise overview of their work, using previously unpublished material. The team IAN+ was formed in 1997 in Rome by Carmelo Baglivo, Luca Galofaro and Stefania Manna. Maria Luisa Palumbo works at the McLuhan Programm in Culture and Technology.

We are surrounded by objects which are causing our relationship with the world around us to become increasingly intangible and virtual. Even the work of the designer is changing: coupled with the traditional principles of aesthetics and practicality, concepts such as communication, multimedia, virtuality are now important tools of the trade. Today's designers are confronted with a variety of complex demands and the computer offers an extremely flexible and creative way of meeting them. This book examines the many developments and changes which the digital age has effected in the field of design.

Book excerpt: "A groundbreaking history of digital design from the nineteenth century to todayDigital design has emerged as perhaps the most dynamic force in society, occupying a fluid, experimental space where product design intersects with art, film, business, engineering, theater, music, and artificial intelligence. Stephen Eskilson traces the history of digital design from its precursors in the nineteenth century to its technological and cultural ascendency today, providing a multifaceted account of a digital revolution that touches all aspects of our lives. We live in a time when silicon processors, miniaturization, and CAD-enhanced 3D design have transformed the tangible world of cars and coffee makers as well as the screen world on our phones, computers, and game systems. Eskilson provides invaluable historical perspective to help readers better understand how digital design has become such a vibrant feature of the contemporary landscape. Along the way, he paints compelling portraits of key innovators behind this transformation, from foundational figures such as Marshall McLuhan, Nam June Paik, and April Greiman to those mapping new frontiers, such as Sepandar Kamvar, Jeanne Gang, Karim Rashid, Neri Oxman, and Jony Ive.Bringing together an unprecedented array of sources on digital design, this comprehensive and richly illustrated book reveals how many of the digital practices we think of as the cutting-edge actually originated in the analog age and how the history of digital design is as much about our changing relationship to forms as the forms themselves"--

Book excerpt: A sense of harmony and proportion has traditionally been achieved in architectural compositions by using the dimensions of the human body as the starting point. Modern technology now enables us to go beyond these physical dimensions into a virtual world, and this poses a challenge to architecture as we usually perceive it. Interactive, flexible and intelligent models are being called for. Whilst technology is taking us into the realms of virtual reality, architecture on the other hand, is becoming more corporeal. "Postorganic" is the term being used to express this merging of the body and architecture brought about by electronic media. A radical change in perspective is blurring the distinction between the organic and mechanic, and the artificial logic of the computer and the natural logic of man are fusing together

This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Eisenman is one of the most controversial protagonists of the architectural scene, who is known as much for his theoretical essays as he is for his architecture. While much has been written about his built works and his philosophies, most books focus on one or the other aspect. By structuring this volume around the concept of form, Stefano Corbo links together Eisenman’s architecture with his theory. From Formalism to Weak Form: The Architecture and Philosophy of Peter Eisenman argues that form is the sphere of mediation between our body, our inner world and the exterior world and, as such, it enables connections to be made between philosophy and architecture. From the start of his career on, Eisenman has been deeply interested in the problem of form in architecture and has constantly challenged the classical concept of it. For him, form is not simply a cognitive tool that determines a physical structure, which discriminates all that is active from what is passive, what is inside from what is outside. He has always tried to connect his own work with the cultural manifestations of the time: firstly under the influence of Colin Rowe and his formalist studies; secondly, by re-interpreting Chomsky’s linguistic theories; in the 80’s, by collaborating with Derrida and his de-constructivist approach; more recently,by discovering Henri Bergson's idea of Time. These different moments underline different phases, different projects, different programmatic manifestos; and above all, an evolving notion of form. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach based on the intersections between architecture and philosophy, this book investigates all these definitions and, in doing so, provides new insights into and a deeper understanding of the complexity of Eisenman’s work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the connection between digital fabrication and the design build studio in both academic and professional studios. The book presents 17 essays and cases studies from well-known scholars and practitioners, including Kengo Kuma, Joseph Choma, Dan Rockhill, Keith Zawistowski, and Marie Zawistowski, whose theoretical and practical work addresses design build at various levels. Four introductory essays trace the history of the design build movement, exploring the emergence of design build in the pedagogy of the Bauhaus, the integration of technology into architectural design, and the influence of the act of making on the design build studio. The rest of the book is divided into two parts; the first part looks at traditional pedagogical models for the design build studio, and the second part focuses on experimental methods used in design build programs. Together, these works discuss human behavior, social-cultural trends, and motivations in socially minded studios which are based on a service-learning model. They look at component-based studios where innovation allows for an increased level of research and testing of new materials and assemblies, sustainable principles, and zero-energy prototypes. Illustrated with over 200 color images, this book will be a valuable resource for architecture students, educators, and practitioners seeking to explore the impact of digital fabrication on the global design build movement.
