Chapter 3 describes the reactions of individual nonporous solid particles, while Chapter 4 elaborates the reaction of single porous particles. Solid-solid reactions proceeding through gaseous intermediates are considered in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 deals with the experimental approaches to the study of gas-solid reaction systems. How information on single-particle behavior may be used for the design of multiparticle, large-scale assemblies, and packed- and fluidized-bed reaction systems is deliberated in Chapter 7. The last chapter covers the specific gas-solid reaction systems, including some statistical indices indicating the economic importance of the systems and processes it’s based on. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Fundamental Aspects of Inert Gases in Solids, held at Bonas, France from 16-22 September 1990, was the fifth in a series of meetings that have been held in this topic area since 1979. The Consultants' Meeting in that year at Harwell on Rare Gas Behaviour in Metals and Ionic Solids was followed in 1982 by the Jiilich Inter national Symposium on Fundamental Aspects of Helium in Metals. Two smaller meetings have followed-a CECAM organised workshop on Helium Bubbles in Metals was held at Orsay, France in 1986 while in February 1989, a Topical Symposium on Noble Gases in Metals was held in Las Vegas as part of the large TMS/AIME Spring Meeting. As is well known, the dominating feature of inert gas atoms in most solids is their high heat of solution, leading in most situations to an essentially zero solubility and gas-atom precipita tion. In organising the workshop, one particular aim was to target the researchers in the field of inert-gas/solid interactions from three different areas--namely metals, tritides and nuclear fuels-in order to encourage and foster the cross-fertilisation of approaches and ideas. In these three material classes, the behaviour of inert gases in metals has probably been most studied, partly from technological considerations-the effects of helium production via (n, a) reac tions during neutron irradiation are of importance, particularly in a fusion reactor environ ment-and partly from a more fundamental viewpoint.

Among them are the movement of gases in earth strata, the aeration of soils, the drying of certain materials, some catalytic reactions, purification by adsorption, isotope separation, column chro matography, cooling of nuclear reactors, and the permeability of various packing materials. The evolution of the understanding of this subject has not always been straightforward and progressive-there has been much confusion and many doubts and misunderstandings, some of which remain to this day. The main reason for the difficulties in the development of this subject is, we now know, the lack of an understanding of the effects of walls on diffusing systems. Textbooks usually treat diffusion on two levels: at the physicochemi cal or molecular level, making use of the kinetic theory of gases (which while a very rigorous and well-founded theory nevertheless is valid only for systems without walls), or at the level of a transport phenomenon, a level geared toward applications. The influence of walls is usually disregarded or is treated very briefly (for example, by taking account of the Knudsen regime or by introducing a transition regime of limited validity) in a way unconnected with previous studies. As a consequence, the extensive, gener alized, and well-founded knowledge of systems without walls has often been applied without sound basis to real situations, i.e., to systems with walls.

Book excerpt: Perhaps no dating method has the wide range of applicability as does the potassium argon dating method from either consideration of the ranges of ages which can be dated or the availability of suitable material to date. Minerals as young as tens of thousands of years to minerals billions of years old have been successfully dated. Many minerals retain for times of the order of billions of years the daughter, Ar40, and many minerals contain as a component K40 the parent element, potassium being a common element in the earth's crust. As a result, most rock contains at least one mineral which can be successfully dated by the potassium argon method. Even though this method has been applied for over fifteen years, there is as yet no work which summarizes the experimental techniques and the results available. The sixtieth birthday ofW. GENTNER, one of the pioneers in this field of research, is a suitable time to present such a summary.
