Brokaw and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: In problems involving fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer of gases, the viscosities, thermal conductivities, and diffusion coefficients are required. Direct measurements are in any event time consuming--they may be impossible. Alignment charts (nomographs) for calculating the low-pressure transport properties of nonpolar gases and gas mixtures are presented. Calculations for pure gases are based on the rigorous kinetic theory of gases as applied to a realistic intermolecular force law. Mixture viscosities and conductivities are calculated from good approximations derived from rigorous theory. Properties can be calculated quickly with a precision of 2 percent or better. Accuracy depends on how well the constants characterizing the intermolecular force law are known; if constants are derived from experimental data, results should be accurate to 5 percent or better. Force constants for 65 gases are tabulated.

Book excerpt: This classic and bestselling landmark publication, originally published in 1965, examines the dynamic mechanisms, fundamental principles, and physical properties of various chromatographic procedures. It offers methods to characterize, identify, and predict chromatographic phenomena - providing strategies to select the most appropriate separation tools and techniques for specific applications in chemistry, physics, biology, and forensic and environmental science. Written by a world-renowned pioneer in the field, Dynamics of Chromatography contains many worked equations and real-world examples in gas and liquid chromatography. It includes numerous schematic figures for visualization of key concepts, introduces the means to control migration rate differences and zone spreading, and presents a detailed random-walk model for clarification of column processes. It also analyzes flow, diffusion, and kinetic events, stresses the link between theory and practice, and summarizes mathematical quantities and parameters.

Book excerpt: In the present monograph, we develop the kinetic theory of transport phenomena and relaxation processes in the flows of reacting gas mixtures and discuss its applications to strongly non-equilibrium conditions. The main attention is focused on the influence of non-equilibrium kinetics on gas dynamics and transport properties. Closed systems of fluid dynamic equations are derived from the kinetic equations in different approaches. We consider the most accurate approach taking into account the state-to-state kinetics in a flow, as well as simplified multi-temperature and one-temperature models based on quasi-stationary distributions. Within these approaches, we propose the algorithms for the calculation of the transport coefficients and rate coefficients of chemical reactions and energy exchanges in non-equilibrium flows; the developed techniques are based on the fundamental kinetic theory principles. The theory is applied to the modeling of non-equilibrium flows behind strong shock waves, in the boundary layer, and in nozzles. The comparison of the results obtained within the frame of different approaches is presented, the advantages of the new state-to-state kinetic model are discussed, and the limits of validity for simplified models are established. The book can be interesting for scientists and graduate students working on physical gas dynamics, aerothermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, non-equilibrium physical-chemical kinetics, and kinetic theory of gases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic book, now reissued in paperback, presents a detailed account of the mathematical theory of viscosity, thermal conduction, and diffusion in non-uniform gases based on the solution of the Maxwell-Boltzmann equations. The theory of Chapman and Enskog, describing work on dense gases, quantum theory of collisions, and the theory of conduction and diffusion in ionized gases in the presence of electric and magnetic fields is also included in the later chapters. This reprint of the third edition, first published in 1970, includes revisions that take account of extensions of the theory to fresh molecular models and of new methods used in discussing dense gases and plasmas.

This book was released on 1963 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viscosities and thermal conductivities, suitable for heat-transfer calculations, were estimated for about 200 gases in the ground state from 100° to 5000° K and 1-atm pressure. Free radicals were included, but excited states and ions were not. Calculations for the transport coefficients were based upon the Lennard-Jones (12-6) potential for all gases. Intermolecular force constants for this potential were obtained from experimental viscosity data or were estimated when data were not available. The same set of constants was used to calculate both viscosity and conductivity. An Eucken-type correction for exchange between internal and translational energies was made for thermal conductivities of polyatomic gases.

Book excerpt: Ludwig's Applied Process Design for Chemical and Petrochemical Plants Incorporating Process Safety Incidents, Fifth Edition, Volume One is ever evolving and provides improved techniques and fundamental design methodologies to guide the practicing engineer in designing process equipment and applying chemical processes to properly detailed hardware. Like its predecessor, this new edition continues to present updated information for achieving optimum operational and process conditions and avoiding problems caused by inadequate sizing and lack of internally detailed hardware. The volume provides both fundamental theories, where applicable, and direct application of these theories to applied equations essential in the design effort. This approach in presenting design information is essential for troubleshooting process equipment and in executing system performance analysis. Volume 1 covers process planning, flow-sheeting, scheduling, cost estimation, economic factors, physical properties of liquids and gases, fluid flow, mixing of liquids, mechanical separations, process safety, pressure-relieving devices, metallurgy and corrosion, and process optimization. The book builds upon Ludwig's classic text to further enhance its use as a chemical engineering process design manual of methods and proven fundamentals. This new edition includes new content on three-phase separation, ejectors and mechanical vacuum systems, process safety management, HAZOP and hazard analyses, and optimization of chemical process/blending. ?
