Book Synopsis X-ray Diffraction by Bent Crystal Lamellae by : Hans Ekstein
Download or read book X-ray Diffraction by Bent Crystal Lamellae written by Hans Ekstein and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bent crystal lamella may be assumed to consist of individual irregularly shaped blocks having mutual angular disorientation or to be regular in structure except for plastic deformation. The blockes were assumed to be of such a size that the kinematic theory would be valid. X-ray integrated intensity was calculated in the first case by adding the intensities of the individual blocks and in the second case by adding the amplitudes. Theoretical analysis indicated that, in both cases, moderate bending is not expected to change the integrated intensity or to cause broadening of the Debye-Scherrer lines.
Book Synopsis A Criterion for the Dynamical to Kinematical Transition of X-ray Diffraction on a Bent Crystal by :
Download or read book A Criterion for the Dynamical to Kinematical Transition of X-ray Diffraction on a Bent Crystal written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that the peak reflectivity of a bent crystal, generally speaking, is smaller than that of a plane crystal, and it goes to zero when the crystal curvature goes to infinity. The reason for this is the transition between dynamical and kinematical diffraction that takes place as the crystal curvature increases. The physical explanation is as follows: the deviation from exact Bragg position along the beam changes so fast that the thickness over which the beam is within a Darwin width becomes too small to reflect the beam. Bent crystals are widely used as focusing elements in X-ray optics, and estimation of whether or not a bent crystal is still perfect enough to provide good reflectivity is of great importance. Currently the Advanced Photon Source (APS) is considering a number of bent crystals as focusing elements for future APS beamlines, including a sagittaly focusing monochromator and bent backscattering analyzer for inelastic X-ray scattering experiments. A criterion is given in answer to the question: To what extent is it possible to bend a crystal without loss of X-ray peak reflectivity? An expression based on the work of Chukhovskii, Gabrielyan and Petrashen, is formulated that applies to anisotropic cubic crystal and that can be used not only for conventional asymmetric Bragg diffraction, but also for inclined crystal diffraction. The following special cases are treated as examples: isotropic crystal, standard symmetrical Bragg diffraction, extremely asymmetric diffraction, and backscattering with Bragg angles near 90°. In addition, an asymptotic behavior for high energies is detailed.

Book Synopsis Early Papers on Diffraction of X-rays by Crystals by : J.M. Bijvoet

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Preface to Early Papers on Diffraction of X-rays by Crystals Volume I (containing Chapters I-V and published in 1969), the history and planning of the complete book were outlined. The publication in two separate and consecutive volumes was merely a matter of management; the compilation of both volumes was done at the same time. There is a distinct difference in subject-matter between both volumes: Volume I contains the fundamentals of the theory, while Volume II treats the practical development of the 'trial' -method and the genesis and first applications of the Fourier method. In the period covered by Early Papers (1912-1935), the trial method leads to the successful conquest of structures with up to a hundred parameters. We conclude the book with Patterson's discovery (1934) of the p2-series as described in his second, more detailed and extended paper of 1935. With this method the apparatus was completed which led to the present undreamt-of successes of the Fourier method in the field of organic chemistry. We have considered the inclusion of Robertson's famous synthesis of the structure of phtalocyanine (1936). However, we decided that its proper place would be at the beginning of a book which, no doubt, will appear one day, describing this later period. Considerations of space caused us to give up the chapter on Texture planned at first.
Book Synopsis X-Ray Diffraction Topography by : B. K. Tanner
Download or read book X-Ray Diffraction Topography written by B. K. Tanner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-Ray Diffraction Topography presents an elementary treatment of X-ray topography which is comprehensible to the non-specialist. It discusses the development of the principles and application of the subject matter. X-ray topography is the study of crystals which use x-ray diffraction. Some of the topics covered in the book are the basic dynamical x-ray diffraction theory, the Berg-Barrett method, Lang's method, double crystal methods, the contrast on x-ray topography, and the analysis of crystal defects and distortions. The crystals grown from solution are covered. The naturally occurring crystals are discussed. The text defines the meaning of melt, solid state and vapour growth. An analysis of the properties of inorganic crystals is presented. A chapter of the volume is devoted to the characteristics of metals. Another section of the book focuses on the production of ice crystals and the utilization of oxides as laser materials. The book will provide useful information to chemists, scientists, students and researchers.
Book Synopsis Experimental Approaches and Applications by : Bernd Crasemann
Download or read book Experimental Approaches and Applications written by Bernd Crasemann and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic Inner-Shell Processes, Volume II: Experimental Approaches and Applications focuses on the physics of atomic inner shells, with emphasis on experimental aspects including the use of radioactive atoms for studies of atomic transition probabilities. Surveys of modern techniques of electron and photon spectrometry are also presented, and selected practical applications of inner-shell processes are outlined. Comprised of six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the general principles underlying the experimental techniques that make use of radioactive isotopes for inner-shell transition measurements. The discussion then turns to electron spectrometry, its instrumentation as well as basic and operational principles; X-ray diffraction spectrometry, paying particular attention to types of X-ray spectrometers and general characteristics of crystal spectrometers; spectrometry with solid-state detectors; and proportional-counter spectrometry. The final chapter considers some practical applications of inner-shell ionization phenomena, with particular reference to X-ray fluorescence analysis and astrophysics. This book should be valuable to physicists and other scientists who plan to engage in research on atomic inner-shell processes.

Book Synopsis X-Ray and Neutron Diffraction in Nonideal Crystals by : Mikhail A. Krivoglaz
Download or read book X-Ray and Neutron Diffraction in Nonideal Crystals written by Mikhail A. Krivoglaz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mikhail Alexandrovich Krivoglaz died unexpectedly when he was preparing the English edition of his two-volume monograph on diffraction and diffuse scatter ing of X-rays and neutrons in imperfect crystals. His death was a heavy blow to all who knew him, who had worked with him and to the world science community as a whole. The application of the diffraction techniques for the study of imperfections of crystal structures was the major field of Krivoglaz' work throughout his career in science. He started working in the field in the mid-fifties and since then made fundamental contributions to the theory of real crystals. His results have largely determined the current level of knowledge in this field for more than thirty years. Until the very last days of his life, Krivoglaz continued active studies in the physics of diffraction effects in real crystals. His interest in the theory aided in the explanation of the rapidly advancing experimental studies. The milestones marking important stages of his work were the first mono graph on the theory of X-ray and neutron scattering in real crystals which was published in Russian in 1967 (a revised English edition in 1969), and the two volume monograph published in Russian in 1983-84 (this edition is the revised translation of the latter).

Book Synopsis X-Ray Multiple-Wave Diffraction by : Shih-Lin Chang
Download or read book X-Ray Multiple-Wave Diffraction written by Shih-Lin Chang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray multiple-wave diffraction, sometimes called multiple diffraction or N-beam diffraction, results from the scattering of X-rays from periodic two or higher-dimensional structures, like 2-d and 3-d crystals and even quasi crystals. The interaction of the X-rays with the periodic arrangement of atoms usually provides structural information about the scatterer. Unlike the usual Bragg reflection, the so-called two-wave diffraction, the multiply diffracted intensities are sensitive to the phases of the structure factors in volved. This gives X-ray multiple-wave diffraction the chance to solve the X-ray phase problem. On the other hand, the condition for generating an X ray multiple-wave diffraction is much more strict than in two-wave cases. This makes X-ray multiple-wave diffraction a useful technique for precise measure ments of crystal lattice constants and the wavelength of radiation sources. Recent progress in the application of this particular diffraction technique to surfaces, thin films, and less ordered systems has demonstrated the diver sity and practicability of the technique for structural research in condensed matter physics, materials sciences, crystallography, and X-ray optics. The first book on this subject, Multiple Diffraction of X-Rays in Crystals, was published in 1984, and intended to give a contemporary review on the fundamental and application aspects of this diffraction.
