Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diffraction of Electromagnetic Waves by a Plane Wire Grating In the infrared region the grating constant is much greater than a wavelength. In this case one can assume that there is no interaction between the wires of the grating. The diffraction field is taken as the sum of diffrac tion fields of the individual wires of the grating, the field of any one wire calculated neglecting the other wiresl. The grating is assumed to consist of a set of infinite, parallel, equidistant, perfectly conducting circular cylinders. The set may be taken as finite, showing the background in addition to the various order spectra. Only the infinite grating will be considered here. This approach was extended somewhat by'twersky2 who included the first order interaction effects between neighboring elements in the case of an acoustic wave incident on a grat ing of perfectly rigid circular cylinders. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing geophysicists with an in-depth understanding of the theoretical and applied background for the seismic diffraction method, “Classical and Modern Diffraction Theory” covers the history and foundations of the classical theory and the key elements of the modern diffraction theory. Chapters include an overview and a historical review of classical theory, a summary of the experimental results illustrating this theory, and key principles of the modern theory of diffraction; the early cornerstones of classical diffraction theory, starting from its inception in the 17th century and an extensive introduction to reprinted works of Grimaldi, Huygens, and Young; details of the classical theory of diffractions as developed in the 19th century and reprinted works of Fresnel, Green, Helmholtz, Kirchhoff, and Rayleigh; and the cornerstones of the modern theory including Keller’s geometrical theory of diffraction, boundary-layer theory, and super-resolution. Appendices on the Cornu spiral and Babinet’s principle are also included.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A doubly infinite set of linear equations is derived for the currents excited on the pair of planar wire grids by a plane wave of arbitrary polarization. The equations can be solved by perturbation if the two planar arrays are sufficiently separated or by truncation and matrix inversion otherwise. The transmission coefficients are derived including the cross-polarized components, and numerical results are presented to illustrate the effects of various parameters. (Author).
Book Synopsis History of Wireless by : T. K. Sarkar
Download or read book History of Wireless written by T. K. Sarkar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-01-30 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Important new insights into how various components and systems evolved Premised on the idea that one cannot know a science without knowing its history, History of Wireless offers a lively new treatment that introduces previously unacknowledged pioneers and developments, setting a new standard for understanding the evolution of this important technology. Starting with the background-magnetism, electricity, light, and Maxwell's Electromagnetic Theory-this book offers new insights into the initial theory and experimental exploration of wireless. In addition to the well-known contributions of Maxwell, Hertz, and Marconi, it examines work done by Heaviside, Tesla, and passionate amateurs such as the Kentucky melon farmer Nathan Stubblefield and the unsung hero Antonio Meucci. Looking at the story from mathematical, physics, technical, and other perspectives, the clearly written text describes the development of wireless within a vivid scientific milieu. History of Wireless also goes into other key areas, including: The work of J. C. Bose and J. A. Fleming German, Japanese, and Soviet contributions to physics and applications of electromagnetic oscillations and waves Wireless telegraphic and telephonic development and attempts to achieve transatlantic wireless communications Wireless telegraphy in South Africa in the early twentieth century Antenna development in Japan: past and present Soviet quasi-optics at near-mm and sub-mm wavelengths The evolution of electromagnetic waveguides The history of phased array antennas Augmenting the typical, Marconi-centered approach, History of Wireless fills in the conventionally accepted story with attention to more specific, less-known discoveries and individuals, and challenges traditional assumptions about the origins and growth of wireless. This allows for a more comprehensive understanding of how various components and systems evolved. Written in a clear tone with a broad scientific audience in mind, this exciting and thorough treatment is sure to become a classic in the field.
