Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diffraction of a Hydromagnetic Wave by a Half Plane In this paper we solve for the diffracted wave which results when a weak hydromagnetic shock impinges on a rigid perfectly conducting half plane. We assume a medium which is a compressible perfect fluid (no heat conduction, no viscosity) and a perfect electrical conductor. In the undisturbed state the fluid is at rest and is permeated by a constant magnetic field B6. The fluid extends through all space around an obstacle, in the shape of a half plane, made of a rigid perfectly conducting material. Then, possibly due to a distant disturbance, a weak plane discontinuous wave or weak shock propagates through the fluid. We are interested in the diffracted wave caused by the interference of the half plane obstacle after the incident wave arrives. We assume that the amplitude of the disturbance of the fluid is small, so that it is appropriate to employ the linearized equations of motion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diffraction of a Plane Wave by an Unidirectionally Conducting Half-Plane In a recent paper[i], Toraldo di Francia has given an approximate solution for the diffraction of a plane wave by a small circular disc composed of fine parallel wires. He idealized such a screen as an infinitely thin disc which is perfectly conducting in one direction; the reformulation led to a boundary value problem which was, in turn, solved approximately. During a visit to New York University, the above author suggested to us the problem of determining an exact solution of the correspondingly formulated problem for a half plane. The present paper is devoted to the determination of such an exact solution. The existence of a solution supports the validity of the idealization employed by Toraldo di Francia. It is anticipated that our solu tion will also prove useful in constructing approximate solutions for the diffrac tion by large but finite unidirectional screens, just as Sommerfeld's solution for the perfectly conducting half plane proves useful in solving problems of diffraction by large perfectly conducting screens. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diffraction by a Wide Slit Since there already exist numerous investigations of the diffraction of scalar waves by a slit, the addition of another item to the literature requires some explanation. The purpose of the present note is to give an elementary and intuitive account of the diffraction by an infinite conducting plane with a slit. We consider specifically the case of electromagnetic waves whose electric field possesses only a single component, namely a component in the direction parallel to the edges of the slit. The results are also applicable to the acoustic problem, for soft screens. It is found that the results for large slit widths can be expressed approximately in terms of simple well-known functions and that these approximations are more accurate than those conveniently obtainable by previous procedures. The procedures that have hitherto been proposed and applied to this problem fall into three categories. First, there is the exact theory based upon separation of variables in elliptic coordinates. This procedure is useful only when the ratio of slit width to wavelength is small (that is, say, smaller than 3), Second, there are approximation procedures that are valid when the ratio of slit width to wavelength is small. Such procedures, based on the solution of related electrostatic problems, were indicated by Rayleigh and have been Ca developed further by, e.g., Sommerfeld, Groschwitz and Honl, and Bouwkamp. Finally, there are approximate treatments valuable particularly for large ratios of slit widths to wavelength; among these are calculations based on Kirchoff's procedures and their various modifications, and the work of Schwarzschild. A calculation related to that of Schwarzschild has recently been published by Fox in connection with diffraction by a pulse. It should be noted that variational techniques may be applied in conjunction with any of the approximate methods just mentioned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On a Fredholm Equation in Diffraction Theory We consider here the problem of the diffraction of a plane scalar wave normally incident on a plane screen with a circular aperture. Let u be the solution of Au K2u O, which represents the diffracted wave, and let p, 9 be polar coordinates on the screen such that p 0 represents the center of the aperture. We assume that on the screen u 0. Let the radius of the aperture be a and let Q (p) be the value of u in the aperture, 0 5 p 5 a. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diffraction of Electromagnetic Waves by a Slit in a Conducting Plan Between Different Media One of the classical diffraction problems is the problem of diffraction of electromagnetic waves by an infinitely long parallel slit in a perfectly conducting plane embedded in a homogeneous medium. The problem was first treated.by Sieger[i], and extensive numerical results are due especially to Morse and and Skavlem[3]. The general procedure is to expand in terms of Mathieu functions the incident, reflected, and diffracted fields, and then to evaluate explicitly the coef ficients of the series using the boundary conditions. Book excerpt: TO THE SECOND EDITION In the nine years since this book was first written, rapid progress has been made scientifically in nuclear fusion, space physics, and nonlinear plasma theory. At the same time, the energy shortage on the one hand and the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn on the other have increased the national awareness of the important applications of plasma physics to energy production and to the understanding of our space environment. In magnetic confinement fusion, this period has seen the attainment 13 of a Lawson number nTE of 2 x 10 cm -3 sec in the Alcator tokamaks at MIT; neutral-beam heating of the PL T tokamak at Princeton to KTi = 6. 5 keV; increase of average ß to 3%-5% in tokamaks at Oak Ridge and General Atomic; and the stabilization of mirror-confined plasmas at Livermore, together with injection of ion current to near field-reversal conditions in the 2XIIß device. Invention of the tandem mirror has given magnetic confinement a new and exciting dimension. New ideas have emerged, such as the compact torus, surface-field devices, and the EßT mirror-torus hybrid, and some old ideas, such as the stellarator and the reversed-field pinch, have been revived. Radiofrequency heat ing has become a new star with its promise of dc current drive. Perhaps most importantly, great progress has been made in the understanding of the MHD behavior of toroidal plasmas: tearing modes, magnetic Vll Vlll islands, and disruptions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phenomenological Theory of Multi-Mode Surface Wave Excitation, Propagation and Diffraction: I. Plane Structures It is well known that surface waves can be excited and propagated along particular idealized electromagnetic structures. Examples are dielectric coated surfaces, dielectric slabs and corrugated or laminated structures.* In so far as the surface wave feature is concerned, it is known that the details of the structure may be suppressed and replaced by an impedance boun dary condition.ej]. Subsequent developments showed that the use of impedance boundary conditions facilitated the solution of more complex problems such as the excitation, propagation and diffraction of surface waves on structures with discontinuities in impedance and geometry l5-2h]. The pheno menological representation by an impedance boundary condition is also useful in analyzing the effect of other structures such as absorbers and surfaces with anisotropic conductivity [6. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking text and reference book on twenty-first-century classical physics and its applications This first-year graduate-level text and reference book covers the fundamental concepts and twenty-first-century applications of six major areas of classical physics that every masters- or PhD-level physicist should be exposed to, but often isn't: statistical physics, optics (waves of all sorts), elastodynamics, fluid mechanics, plasma physics, and special and general relativity and cosmology. Growing out of a full-year course that the eminent researchers Kip Thorne and Roger Blandford taught at Caltech for almost three decades, this book is designed to broaden the training of physicists. Its six main topical sections are also designed so they can be used in separate courses, and the book provides an invaluable reference for researchers. Presents all the major fields of classical physics except three prerequisites: classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and elementary thermodynamics Elucidates the interconnections between diverse fields and explains their shared concepts and tools Focuses on fundamental concepts and modern, real-world applications Takes applications from fundamental, experimental, and applied physics; astrophysics and cosmology; geophysics, oceanography, and meteorology; biophysics and chemical physics; engineering and optical science and technology; and information science and technology Emphasizes the quantum roots of classical physics and how to use quantum techniques to elucidate classical concepts or simplify classical calculations Features hundreds of color figures, some five hundred exercises, extensive cross-references, and a detailed index An online illustration package is available

Book excerpt: Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.
