Book excerpt: This book is devoted to computing the index of elliptic PDEs on non-compact Riemannian manifolds in the presence of local singularities and zeros, as well as polynomial growth at infinity. The classical Riemann–Roch theorem and its generalizations to elliptic equations on bounded domains and compact manifolds, due to Maz’ya, Plameneskii, Nadirashvilli, Gromov and Shubin, account for the contribution to the index due to a divisor of zeros and singularities. On the other hand, the Liouville theorems of Avellaneda, Lin, Li, Moser, Struwe, Kuchment and Pinchover provide the index of periodic elliptic equations on abelian coverings of compact manifolds with polynomial growth at infinity, i.e. in the presence of a "divisor" at infinity. A natural question is whether one can combine the Riemann–Roch and Liouville type results. This monograph shows that this can indeed be done, however the answers are more intricate than one might initially expect. Namely, the interaction between the finite divisor and the point at infinity is non-trivial. The text is targeted towards researchers in PDEs, geometric analysis, and mathematical physics.

Book excerpt: This book is written for students and researchers who are fond of mathematics and the natural sciences. It consists of two parts. Part I presents the theory of analysis in which the mathematical theory is described not as an accomplished palace, but as a building under construction. It uncovers how a theory has been or is being constructed. In Part II, the theory of differential equations is applied to interesting practical problems, such as pursuit-line and tractrix, attack on an object from an airplane, an insect crawling along a stretching rubber rod, the SIR model of a virus infection, string vibration, circular membrane vibration, as well as the wind ripple, sand dune and wave phenomena on a highway. Furthermore, the problems of a one-dimensional lattice vibration, the keyboard percussion vibration and the eigenvalue problems in quantum mechanics, such as the Aharonov-Bohm effect, are also investigated in detail.

Book excerpt: There are three major changes in the Third Edition of Differential Equations and Their Applications. First, we have completely rewritten the section on singular solutions of differential equations. A new section, 2.8.1, dealing with Euler equations has been added, and this section is used to motivate a greatly expanded treatment of singular equations in sections 2.8.2 and 2.8.3. Our second major change is the addition of a new section, 4.9, dealing with bifurcation theory, a subject of much current interest. We felt it desirable to give the reader a brief but nontrivial introduction to this important topic. Our third major change is in Section 2.6, where we have switched to the metric system of units. This change was requested by many of our readers. In addition to the above changes, we have updated the material on population models, and have revised the exercises in this section. Minor editorial changes have also been made throughout the text. New York City Martin Braun Nooember, 1982 Preface to the First Edition This textbook is a unique blend of the theory of differential equations and their exciting application to "real world" problems. First, and foremost, it is a rigorous study of ordinary differential equations and can be fully understood by anyone who has completed one year of calculus. However, in addition to the traditional applications, it also contains many exciting "real life" problems. These applications are completely self contained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential Equations are very important tools in Mathematical Analysis. They are widely found in mathematics itself and in its applications to statistics, computing, electrical circuit analysis, dynamical systems, economics, biology, and so on. Recently there has been an increasing interest in and widely-extended use of differential equations and systems of fractional order (that is, of arbitrary order) as better models of phenomena in various physics, engineering, automatization, biology and biomedicine, chemistry, earth science, economics, nature, and so on. Now, new unified presentation and extensive development of special functions associated with fractional calculus are necessary tools, being related to the theory of differentiation and integration of arbitrary order (i.e., fractional calculus) and to the fractional order (or multi-order) differential and integral equations. This book provides learners with the opportunity to develop an understanding of advancements of special functions and the skills needed to apply advanced mathematical techniques to solve complex differential equations and Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). Subject matters should be strongly related to special functions involving mathematical analysis and its numerous applications. The main objective of this book is to highlight the importance of fundamental results and techniques of the theory of complex analysis for differential equations and PDEs and emphasizes articles devoted to the mathematical treatment of questions arising in physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering, particularly those that stress analytical aspects and novel problems and their solutions. Specific topics include but are not limited to Partial differential equations Least squares on first-order system Sequence and series in functional analysis Special functions related to fractional (non-integer) order control systems and equations Various special functions related to generalized fractional calculus Operational method in fractional calculus Functional analysis and operator theory Mathematical physics Applications of numerical analysis and applied mathematics Computational mathematics Mathematical modeling This book provides the recent developments in special functions and differential equations and publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed book chapters in the area of nonlinear analysis, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, and related applications.

Book excerpt: The book treats free probability theory, which has been extensively developed since the early 1980s. The emphasis is put on entropy and the random matrix model approach. The volume is a unique presentation demonstrating the extensive interrelation between the topics. Wigner's theorem and its broad generalizations, such as asymptotic freeness of independent matrices, are explained in detail. Consistent throughout the book is the parallelism between the normal and semicircle laws. Voiculescu's multivariate free entropy theory is presented with full proofs and extends the results to unitary operators. Some applications to operator algebras are also given. Based on lectures given by the authors in Hungary, Japan, and Italy, the book is a good reference for mathematicians interested in free probability theory and can serve as a text for an advanced graduate course. This book brings together both new material and recent surveys on some topics in differential equations that are either directly relevant to, or closely associated with, mathematical physics. Its topics include asymptotic formulas for the ground-state energy of fermionic gas, renormalization ideas in quantum field theory from perturbations of the free Hamiltonian on the circle, $J$-selfadjoint Dirac operators, spectral theory of Schrodinger operators, inverse problems, isoperimetric inequalities in quantum mechanics, Hardy inequalities, and non-adiabatic transitions. Excellent survey articles on Dirichlet-Neumann inverse problems on manifolds (by Uhlmann), numerical investigations associated with Laplacian eigenvalues on planar regions (by Trefethen), Snell's law and propagation of singularities in the wave equation (by Vasy), random operators on tree graphs (by Aizenmann) make this book interesting and valuable for graduate students, young mathematicians, and physicists alike.

This book presents a unique, modern treatment of solutions to fractional random differential equations in mathematical physics. It follows an analytic approach in applied functional analysis for functional integration in quantum physics and stochastic Langevin-turbulent partial differential equations."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The theory of partial differential equations of mathematical physics has been one of the most important fields of study in applied mathematics. This is essentially due to the frequent occurrence of partial differential equations in many branches of natural sciences and engineering. The present lecture notes have been written for the purpose of presenting an approach based mainly on the mathematical problems and their related solutions. The primary concern, therefore, is not with the general theory, but to provide students with the fundamental concepts, the underlying principles, and the techniques and methods of solution of partial differential equations of mathematical physics. One of the authors main goals is to present a fairly elementary and complete introduction to this subject which is suitable for the "first reading" and accessible for students of different specialities. The material in these lecture notes has been developed and extended from a set of lectures given at Saratov State University and reflects partially the research interests of the authors. It is intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in applied mathematics, computer sciences, physics, engineering, and other specialities. The prerequisites for its study are a standard basic course in mathematical analysis or advanced calculus, including elementary ordinary differential equations. Although various differential equations and problems considered in these lecture notes are physically motivated, a knowledge of the physics involved is not necessary for understanding the mathematical aspects of the solution of these problems.
