Book excerpt: Excerpt from Differential and Integral Calculus for Beginners: Adapted to the Use of Physics and Mechanics Letters received from time to time from a, great variety of students showed that these articles met a real Want, and it was ultimately decided to amplify and extend them, and publish them in book form. The present volume is the result of that decision. In the following pages no attempt has been made to develop the subject as a branch of abstract mathematics the aim has been to provide the physical student with a valuable engine of research, and to accustom him to its use. Many discussions found in larger treatises Will, therefore, be unmentioned in the present work, as possessing no interest from a. Physical point of view. Lack of space must serve as an excuse for the omission of a few ele mentary investigations which possess a. Real value to the physical student. Book Synopsis The Calculus for Beginners (Classic Reprint) by : John William Mercer
Download or read book The Calculus for Beginners (Classic Reprint) written by John William Mercer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Calculus for Beginners No great amount of previous mathematical knowledge is assumed. A boy is supposed to know his Elementary Algebra and Trigonometry and to have some slight acquaint ance with the co-ordinate geometry of the straight line. He should be able to write down the equation of a line through a given point with a given gradient and should know the relation between the gradients of perpendicular lines. He is also expected to have had some practice in drawing graphs from their equations and to know what these graphs mean. Many of the illustrations given are arithmetical, algebraical and geometrical, but in addition to these many will be found drawn from the scientific knowledge usually at the command of boys of this age. Several of the examples are intended to lead up to the ideas afterwards presented in the text, and in the more difficult ones, especially in some which will be found in the miscellaneous sets, the boy of mathematical ability will find plenty of scope for his skill in the manipulation of symbols. It would probably be well to omit the section on Points of Inflexion (pp. 127 - 135) on a first reading It is found there, because there did not seem to be a more convenient place for it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Differential Calculus: With Numerous Worked Out Examples This volume is based on my experience in teaching the elements of the Differential Calculus to a large number of pupils. It is, therefore, throughout of an elementary character. But, as certain parts of it may be found difficult by beginners, they have been marked with an asterisk and may be omitted in a first reading. A few words may be said here about Chapter I. In a mathematical book, which professes to be rigorous in its treatment, it is essential that the definitions be carefully worded. This has been done in the present work. It is, however, possible that, for this reason, Chapter I. May be found heavy reading by some students. To them my advice is this: If you do not grasp the full meaning of a definition in a first reading, leave it and after reading Chapters II. And III. Come back to Chapter I., and then you will understand the definition better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Differential Calculus A Constant is a quantity that has, or is supposed to have, a definite fixed value. A Variable is a quantity that is, or is supposed to be, continually changing in value. In general, constants are represented by the first letters of the alphabet, and variables by the last; but they should not, therefore, be confused with the known and unknown quantities of Algebra, which, in general, are constants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Differential Calculus An inverse Operation is the undoing Of what was done by the corresponding direct Operation, and it ends where the direct Operation began. It may also be defined as an Opera tion the effect Of which the direct Operation simply annuls. E.g., if y (11: b, then 3; is produced by performing a certain opera tion Upon x, viz. Multiplying it by a and adding 5 to the product. The inverse Operation consists in expressing a: in terms of y, and this is done by subtracting b from y and dividing the difference by a. Download or read book Differential and Integral Calculus (Classic Reprint) written by Clyde E. Love and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Differential and Integral Calculus In the treatment of each topic, the text is intended to contain a precise statement of the fundamental principle involved, and to insure the student's clear understanding of this principle, Without distracting his attention by the discussion of a multitude of details. The accompanying exercises are intended to present the problem in hand in a great variety of forms and guises, and to train the stu dent in adapting the general methods of the text to fit these various forms. The constant aim is to prevent the work from degenerating into mere mechanical routine, as it so often tends to do. Wherever possible, except in the purely formal parts of the course, the summarizing of the theory into rules or formulas which can be applied blindly has been avoided. For instance, in the chapter on geo metric applications of the definite integral, stress is laid on the fact that the basic formulas are those of elemen tary geometry, and special formulas involving a coordinate system are omitted. Where the passage from theory to practice would be too difficult for the average student, worked examples are inserted.
