Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Children with phonological impairment (PI) are at increased risk for reading and spelling difficulties. To date, research has focused primarily on the phonological awareness abilities of children with PI as means of examining factors that impact their literacy development. However, research in the area of morphological awareness indicates that it is an essential skill, beyond phonological awareness, necessary for the successful acquisition of reading and spelling. This study investigated the morphological awareness abilities of children with PI as little is known about their morphological awareness skills. By examining the morphological awareness of children with PI, a better understanding of factors that might place these students at risk for reading and spelling difficulties can be developed. Eighty-eight first grade students, 44 students with PI, or a history of PI, and 44 students with typical speech and language skills (TD), were recruited as participants. All participants completed an assessment battery designed to measure expressive phonology, morphological awareness, phonological awareness, letter-name knowledge, receptive vocabulary, reading, and spelling. Descriptive quantitative research methods were used to answer the study's research questions. Specifically, independent samples t-tests were used to determine whether there were differences in morphological awareness abilities between students with PI and students with TD. Regression analyses were used to determine whether the morphological awareness of children with PI and children with typical development account for significant independent variance on measures of reading and spelling. Results from the t-tests suggested significant differences between children with TD and children with PI on all measures of morphological awareness. Regression analyses suggested morphological awareness predicted significant unique variance on the spelling measure for both groups as well as for reading for children with TD; morphological awareness did not significantly predict additional variance on the reading measure for children with PI. Results indicate that children with PI are significantly outperformed by typically developing peers on measures of morphological awareness. This gap in performance may help explain, to some extent, the differences in reading abilities between children with PI and children with TD.

Book excerpt: A substantial amount of research demonstrates that preschoolers' phonological awareness skills are a robust predictor of children's later decoding ability. Several investigators examined performance of children with speech sound impairment (SSI), defined as inaccurate production of speech sounds in the absence of any etiology or communication impairment, on phonological awareness tasks. Investigators found that children with SSI scored below their typically developing peers (TD) on phonological awareness tasks. In contrast, others found no differences between groups. It seems likely that differences in findings regarding phonological awareness skills among children with SSI is the fact that there is considerable heterogeneity among children with SSI (i.e., speech errors can either be a phonological or articulation). Phonology is one component of a child's language system and a phonological impairment (SSI-PI) is evident when patterns of deviations of speech sounds are exhibited in a language system. Children with an articulation impairment (SSI-AI) produce speech sound errors that are affected by the movements of the articulators, not sound patterns. The purpose of the study was to examine whether or not children with SSI-PI are at greater risk for acquiring phonological awareness skills than children with SSI-AI. Furthermore, the phonological awareness skills of children with SSI-PI and SSI-AI were compared to those of their typical peers. In addition, the role of executive function as well as the influence of phonological working memory on phonological awareness task performance was examined. Findings indicate that the SSI-PI group performed more poorly on an assessment of phonological awareness skills than the SSI-AI and TD groups. The SSI-PI group performed significantly more poorly on tasks of executive function and phonological working memory than the TD group. The results of this study support the hypothesis that children with SSI-PI may be more vulnerable to difficulties in reading than children with SSI-AI and children with TD.

Book excerpt: The development of emergent literacy skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a growing subject of inquiry in the field of communication sciences and disorders; however, few studies have investigated the relationship between oral language skills and emergent literacy as a function of various language phenotypes of children with ASD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between oral language abilities in various domains and emergent literacy skills as a function of two language phenotypes, ASD Language Normal (ALN) and ASD Language Impaired (ALI). These phenotypes were determined based on the standardized test scores of a nonword repetition measure of phonological memory. Domains of oral language assessed included semantics (definitional vocabulary and lexical retrieval), morphology, syntax, and pragmatics (receptive/expressive language). Emergent literacy skills assessed in this study include phonological awareness and print knowledge. The participants consisted of 11 children diagnosed with ASD between the ages of 4 years 0 months and 5 years 11 months. Of those 11 participants, 4 were classified in the ALN phenotype and 7 in the ALI phenotype. Significant positive correlations were found between the oral language skills of definitional vocabulary, syntax, morphology, and pragmatics, and phonological awareness. No significant correlations were found between print knowledge and oral language skills with the exception of lexical retrieval. Furthermore, phonological awareness performance was found to be significantly different as a function of phenotype, while print knowledge was not. ALN participants demonstrated greater abilities in phonological awareness than ALI participants, while print knowledge skills were strong in both phenotype groups. These results demonstrate a significant relationship between phonological awareness performance and oral language domains, as well as ASD language phenotype. Overall, participants in the ALN phenotype had significantly higher scores in measures of vocabulary, syntax, morphology, pragmatics, and phonological awareness. Scores on these standardized tests indicate a distinct emergent literacy profile for both ALN and ALI participants, with oral language domains that are significantly related to phonological awareness ability. These profiles and their relationship with measures of oral language should be considered when evaluating and formulating treatment goals for preschool aged children with ASD.

Book excerpt: Numerous language acquisition studies have identified relationships between phonological awareness, which refers to a speaker's ability to identify and manipulate syllable constituents, and other developmental skills, including vocabulary, literacy, and future academic achievement. In contrast, fewer studies have explored the nature of the relationship between phonological awareness and phonological abilities measured through performance in speech production. In this thesis, I explore the nature of this relationship by using statistics to compare the performance of 26 children on three developmental tasks (Phoneme Isolation, Verbal Fluency, and Letter Naming) and two measures of phonological abilities in production (Picture Naming Task and Semi-Directed Narrative). I divide the participants into three separate speaker groups (children with suspected speech disorders, younger children with typical speech, and older children with typical speech). I identify the measures for which lower scores consistently pattern with the former two speaker groups, in comparison to the latter group, and I establish that less mature phonological systems may also influence performance on these assessments. I show that differences in behaviours observed among these speaker groups can most clearly be identified through 'marked' (i.e. complex) phonological contexts, as opposed to those that are 'unmarked' (i.e. simple). In addition to contributing research on the relationship between phonological awareness and phonological abilities in production, this study also provides evidence of the potential for phonological markedness as a principal consideration toward both the future development of phonological assessments and early diagnosis of phonological disorders.
