Educated at Gordonstoun School in Scotland and Cambridge, he was influenced by Mary Cartwright and J. E. Littlewood. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1956 and appointed Professor of Pure Mathematics at Imperial College, London. For over 30 years there he ran a world-famous school in Complex Analysis. He then spent 10 years at York before returning to Imperial College, where he is a Senior Research Fellow. He has received many prizes, awards and honorary degrees. Twice widowed, he now lives in Gloucestershire with his third wife, Marie. He gives a frank account of a life dominated by mathematics, music, friendship, family and service. There are 15 photographs, and a full list of his 218 publications to date. An index lists all persons mentioned in the text. This paperback edition is designed to be as affordable as possible. Many problems arising in engineering and physics are mathematically constructed by differential equations. Most of these problems can only be solved using special polynomials. Special polynomials and orthonormal polynomials provide a new way to analyze solutions of various equations often encountered in engineering and physical problems. In particular, special polynomials play a fundamental and important role in mathematics and applied mathematics. Until now, research on polynomials has been done in mathematics and applied mathematics only. This book is based on recent results in all areas related to polynomials. Divided into sections on theory and application, this book provides an overview of the current research in the field of polynomials.
