Book excerpt: Winner of the 1993 PEN Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize Published in 1776 and considered the first Polish novel ever written, The Adventures of Mr. Nicholas Wisdom is a picaresque tale following the naïve title character's coming of age. Having conquered (and fled) sophisticated Warsaw, Nicholas enjoys many adventures across Europe, South America, and the high seas. He finally lands among the natives of an unknown isle who reject his allegedly superior European ways and instead tutor him for an "enlightened" existence. Resonant with Enlightenment ideas, The Adventures of Mr. Nicholas Wisdom provides a sly portrait of the era's Polish society and a fascinating perspective on the broader problems of eighteenth-century European culture.

Readers will find the heart of the book in the first chapter: the Food and Nutrition Board's nine-point dietary plan to reduce the risk of diet-related chronic illness. The nine points are presented as sensible guidelines that are easy to follow on a daily basis, without complicated measuring or calculatingâ€"and without sacrificing favorite foods. Eat for Life gives practical recommendations on foods to eat and in a "how-to" section provides tips on shopping (how to read food labels), cooking (how to turn a high-fat dish into a low-fat one), and eating out (how to read a menu with nutrition in mind). The volume explains what protein, fiber, cholesterol, and fats are and what foods contain them, and tells readers how to reduce their risk of chronic disease by modifying the types of food they eat. Each chronic disease is clearly defined, with information provided on its prevalence in the United States. Written for everyone concerned about how they can influence their health by what they eat, Eat for Life offers potentially lifesaving information in an understandable and persuasive way. Book Synopsis Guiding Principles for Developing Dietary Reference Intakes Based on Chronic Disease by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Guiding Principles for Developing Dietary Reference Intakes Based on Chronic Disease written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1938 and 1941, nutrient intake recommendations have been issued to the public in Canada and the United States, respectively. Currently defined as the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), these values are a set of standards established by consensus committees under the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and used for planning and assessing diets of apparently healthy individuals and groups. In 2015, a multidisciplinary working group sponsored by the Canadian and U.S. government DRI steering committees convened to identify key scientific challenges encountered in the use of chronic disease endpoints to establish DRI values. Their report, Options for Basing Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) on Chronic Disease: Report from a Joint US-/Canadian-Sponsored Working Group, outlined and proposed ways to address conceptual and methodological challenges related to the work of future DRI Committees. This report assesses the options presented in the previous report and determines guiding principles for including chronic disease endpoints for food substances that will be used by future National Academies committees in establishing DRIs.
Book Synopsis Nutritional Health by : Norman J. Temple
Download or read book Nutritional Health written by Norman J. Temple and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth edition brings together a diverse range of experts in nutrition-related areas to discuss recent thinking and discoveries in nutrition, especially in relation to topics that have the greatest capacity to improve human health and nutritional implementation. An overview of nutrition science in the third decade of the twenty-first century reveals that much water has flown under the bridge of the advancing river that is nutrition research and practice. With these large accumulations of developments in the field of nutrition, the need for a new edition of this book is obvious. Our vastly improved nutrition knowledge gives us the capability of preventing a sizable fraction of the chronic diseases that afflict the people of our world, but only if these discoveries can be translated into effective action at the population level. Nutritional Health endeavours to address the needs of those who would most benefit from up-to-date information on key areas in the field of nutrition. The book starts with a discussion of the nature of nutritional research then moves into an overview of the most important aspects of the complex interactions between diet, its nutrient components, and their impacts on disease states, and on those health conditions that increase the risk of chronic diseases. Parts three and four discuss diet and include new chapters on the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, the flexitarian diet, and the low-carbohydrate diet. The final two parts of the book discuss emerging trends in nutrition science, such as gut microbiome and sustainable diet, and areas of controversy in nutrition, such as the influence of the food industry and dietary supplements. Up to date and comprehensive, Nutritional Health: Strategies for Disease Prevention, Fourth Edition offers physicians, dietitians, and nutritionists a practical, data-driven, integrated resource to help evaluate the critical role of nutrition.
