Die aus einem Advanced Grant-Projekt des European Research Council hervorgegangene, geschichtswissenschaftliche Studie untersucht auf der Grundlage eines sehr unterschiedlichen Forschungsstandes in einem breiten zeitlichen, räumlichen und gattungsmäßigen Spektrum und nach bestimmten Leitfragen Terminologie, Wissen, Funktion, Bewertung, Verständnis, Einordnung und Vergleich aller damals bekannten Religionen: der Heiden, Muslime, Juden, Häretiker und Griechisch-Orthodoxen. Einschlägige Schriften werden dabei ebenso berücksichtigt wie das über zahlreiche Äußerungen verteilte, verbreitete, gerade auch stereotype Bild der Anderen. Die Frage, was man in diesem Sinne unter Heiden oder Häretikern an sich verstanden hat und wie sich die Religionen jeweils vom Christentum abgrenzen, spielt hier eine ebenso große Rolle wie die Einschätzung, ob Muslime und Juden im Mittelalter als dem Christentum näher stehende Monotheisten anerkannt oder ob Häretiker und Orthodoxe überhaupt als Christen wahrgenommen worden sind. Solche Fragen werden hier in diesem Umfang erstmals systematisch für das Bild aller anderen Religionen und vor allem zum ersten Mal vergleichend untersucht. Das Buch bietet daher fundierte Einblicke in die mittelalterlichen Vorstellungswelten und deren Bedeutung für den Umgang der Religionen miteinander. Die mittelalterliche Wahrnehmung anderer Religionen berührt zudem ein auch für die heutige Gesellschaft und Wissenschaft wichtiges Thema in geschichtswissenschaftlicher Perspektive.

Ein dreijähriges ERC-Advanced Grant-Projekt, dessen Ergebnisse in der vorliegenden Publikation exemplarisch vorgeführt werden, hat daher auf breiter Materialbasis die christlich-abendländische Wahrnehmung anderer Religionen analysiert. Dabei sollten nicht nur unmittelbare religiöse Auseinandersetzungen, sondern die verbreitete, auch stereotype Sicht erforscht werden. Für einige Religionen (Häresie, Griechisch-Orthodoxes Christentum, Heidentum) ist dies erstmals systematisch erfolgt, für andere mit besserem Forschungsstand (Judentum, Islam) konnte das Wissen auf breitere Grundlagen gestellt und erweitert werden. Erstmals wird die christliche Wahrnehmung anderer Religionen hier vergleichend nach bestimmten Leitfragen betrachtet. Untersucht werden unter anderem das Wissen über Andersgläubige wie auch dessen Anwendung und die Kontexte der Informationen sowie die Wertung, Einordnung und Abgrenzung der anderen Glaubensgemeinschaften. Insgesamt lassen sich, bei aller Stereotypie, konsistente Vorstellungen erkennen, die Eigenheiten jeder Religion zwar anerkennen, gleichzeitig aber abwerten gegenüber der gemeinsamen Abgrenzung vom Christentum und damit wesentliche Aspekte des christlichen Selbstverständnisses freilegen.

Dreams, illusions, projections, concepts, hopes, utopias/dystopias, desires, and emotional attachments are as specific and impactful as the physical environment. This volume thus sheds important light on the various lenses used by people in the Middle Ages and the early modern age as to how they came to terms with their perceptions, images, and notions. Previous scholarship focused heavily on the history of mentality and history of emotions, whereas here the history of pre-modern imagination, and fantasy assumes center position. Imaginary things are taken seriously because medieval and early modern writers and artists clearly reveal their great significance in their works and their daily lives. Children of Lucifer debunks these facile characterizations by exploring the historical origins of modern Satanism. Ruben van Luijk traces the movement's development from a concept invented by a Christian church eager to demonize its internal and external competitors to a positive (anti-)religious identity embraced by various groups in the modern West. Van Luijk offers a comprehensive intellectual history of this long and unpredictable trajectory. This story involves Romantic poets, radical anarchists, eccentric esotericists, Decadent writers, and schismatic exorcists, among others, and culminates in the establishment of the Church of Satan by carnival entertainer Anton Szandor LaVey. Yet it is more than a collection of colorful characters and unlikely historical episodes. The emergence of new attitudes toward Satan proves to be intimately linked to the ideological struggle for emancipation that transformed the West and is epitomized by the American and French Revolutions. It is also closely connected to secularization, that other exceptional historical process which saw Western culture spontaneously renounce its traditional gods and enter into a self-imposed state of religious indecision. Children of Lucifer makes the case that the emergence of Satanism presents a shadow history of the evolution of modern civilization as we know it.
