Book Synopsis Translation and Gender by : Faruk Yücel
Download or read book Translation and Gender written by Faruk Yücel and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2024-01-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language as a complex and dynamic phenomenon is an important instrument for reflecting individual and social identity. The formation of languages under the influence of specific norms and rules, which depend on historical and cultural developments, goes beyond their mere use as a means of communication. Languages are used to formulate thoughts, express emotions, demonstrate behaviour and produce artistic texts as skills and actions. Languages are also used to exert pressure, direct thoughts and influence people. Especially since the 1970s, under the influence of women's rights and feminist approaches in the West, language has played a prominent role in the reflection on gender and identity in cultural, linguistic and literary studies. This influence has led to an increased awareness of how language shapes and perpetuates concepts of gender and identity. Against this backdrop, this thesis will analyse various dimensions of the linguistic construction of gender and identity and examine their impact on socio-cultural structures. Translation and Gender: Beyond Power and Boundaries is an anthology of studies that analyse in depth the connections between translation and gender, translation and women, and translation and feminist understanding. The publication offers the opportunity to discuss various topics and answer questions related to different approaches.

Book Synopsis Turks, Tatars and Russians in the 13th–16th Centuries by : István Vásáry
Download or read book Turks, Tatars and Russians in the 13th–16th Centuries written by István Vásáry and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The setting for the studies collected here is the West-Eurasian steppe region, extending from present-day Kazakhstan through southern Russia, Ukraine and Moldavia to the Carpathian Basin. The first articles deal with pre-Mongol, Turkic peoples of the region and their relations with the Byzantine Empire to the south, but the core of the volume is the history of the Golden Horde and its successor states, such as the Kazan and Crimean Khanates, whose Turco-Mongol overlords are often referred to as Tatars. These played a decisive role in the history of Western Central Asia and Eastern Europe in the 13th-16th centuries and had a fundamental influence on the rise of the Russian state. Particular articles look at Mongol institutions and terminology, others at the interaction of the medieval Tatar and Russian worlds.

Book Synopsis The Interpretation of the Bible by : Joze Krasovec
Download or read book The Interpretation of the Bible written by Joze Krasovec and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-10-01 with total page 1914 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume, nearly 2000 pages in length and handsomely printed on Bible paper, is perhaps the most comprehensive scholarly work of our time on the translation and interpretation of the Bible. At its core are papers presented to an international symposium in Ljubljana in September 1996 to mark the publication of the new Slovenian version of the Bible, a landmark in Slovene identity and cultural life. In addition, its distinguished editor, Joze Krasovec, has commissioned a wide range of contributions devoted to translations of the Bible in many languages, including the Slavonic languages, Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish and the Scandinavian languages. The 82 chapters in this work, mostly in English, are divided into three parts. Part I, on ancient translations and hermeneutics of the Bible, contains contributions by M.-E. Boismard, S.P. Brock, K.J. Cathcart, R.P. Gordon, L.J. Grech, M. Hengel, O. Keel, J. Lust, E. Tov and others, with a notable comprehensive bibliographic survey of oriental Bible translations from the first millennium by M. van Esbroeck. Part II, on Slavonic and other translations of the Bible, includes the first detailed study of the history of the Slavonic Bible, by Francis J. Thomson (over 300 pp.). Part III, with essays by such scholars as J.H. Charlesworth, D.J.A. Clines, J. Gnilka, M. G÷rg, N. Lohfink and A.C. Thiselton, concerns the interpretation of the Bible in translation, philosophy, theology, art and music. In an appendix, a complete list of printed Bibles in languages throughout the world is presented for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Jahrhundert by : Barbara Schmidt-Haberkamp
Jahrhundert written by Barbara Schmidt-Haberkamp and published by V&R unipress GmbH. This book was released on 2011 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: The contributions to this volume explore intercultural contacts and the reciprocal perceptions between Turkey and Europe in the eighteenth century. 'The dangerous Turk', one of the most antagonistic narratives in early modern times, lost impact after the Ottoman defeat in the second siege of Vienna 1683. The image of the Turk changed from the menacing, invincible terror of Christendom to that of a quaint and exotic neighbour. The result was a broad, partly euphoric acceptance and blending of Ottoman culture into the political, scientific, economic and aesthetic discourses of the eighteenth century. Conversely, the European impact on the socio-political and cultural life of the Ottoman Empire increased at the beginning of the eighteenth century. From the perspective of a variety of different academic disciplines, the contributions to this volume explore the following questions: What possibilities were there to form an idea of the other and to what extent was this idea founded on autistic self-assertion on the one hand, on curiosity and creative appropriation on the other? What forms of intercultural contacts existed and how have they been documented? german description: Thema dieses Bandes sind die interkulturellen Kontakte und die wechselseitige Wahrnehmung zwischen der Turkei und Europa im 18. Jahrhundert.

Book Synopsis Translation and Interdisciplinarity by : Faruk Yücel
Download or read book Translation and Interdisciplinarity written by Faruk Yücel and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2022-12-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interdisciplinarity is significant in the age of globalization and digitalization. It creates new opportunities through comparison and analysis of different findings and methods. Furthermore, it expands the boundaries of each discipline: each topic or phenomenon can be viewed under a whole new light. Instead of conventional or traditional methods, interdisciplinary cooperation can lead to innovative approaches that can contribute to the value of each discipline involved. It also requires respect and recognition between disciplines: their independent positions could be questioned or justified based on their interrelationship. Moreover, interdisciplinary work brings together diverse experts who cooperate and share their findings with each other. In this sense, interdisciplinarity can be seen as a dialogue between disciplines. In this complex interaction, a 'third' field may emerge that transcends the boundaries of each independent discipline. Since relatively young Translation Studies has long been influenced by other disciplines, its boundaries could be defined through interdisciplinarity. In this book, numerous translation scholars engage with the relationship between translation and other disciplines. Translation here is not only to be understood as a transmission of texts, but in a broader sense, as denoting a transformation of different phenomena that could be studied both as a product and as a process.
