Book Synopsis Governing Islam Abroad by : Benjamin Bruce
Download or read book Governing Islam Abroad written by Benjamin Bruce and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From sending imams abroad to financing mosques and Islamic associations, home states play a key role in governing Islam in Western Europe. Drawing on over one hundred interviews and years of fieldwork, this book employs a comparative perspective that analyzes the foreign religious activities of the two home states with the largest diaspora populations in Europe: Turkey and Morocco. The research shows how these states use religion to promote ties with their citizens and their descendants abroad while also seeking to maintain control over the forms of Islam that develop within the diaspora. The author identifies and explains the internal and foreign political interests that have motivated state actors on both sides of the Mediterranean, ultimately arguing that interstate cooperation in religious affairs has and will continue to have a structural influence on the evolution of Islam in Western Europe.

Book Synopsis Crime, Gender and Social Control in Early Modern Frankfurt am Main by : Jeannette Kamp
Download or read book Crime, Gender and Social Control in Early Modern Frankfurt am Main written by Jeannette Kamp and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the lives of (suspected) thieves, illegitimate mothers and vagrants in early modern Frankfurt. The book highlights the gender differences in recorded criminality and the way that they were shaped by the local context. Women played a prominent role in recorded crime in this period, and could even make up half of all defendants in specific European cities. At the same time, there were also large regional differences. Women’s crime patterns in Frankfurt were both similar and different to those of other cities. Informal control within the household played a significant role and influenced the prosecution patterns of authorities. This impacted men and women differently, and created clear distinctions within the system between settled locals and unsettled migrants.
Book Synopsis Parallel Patterns of Shrinking Cities and Urban Growth by : Rocky Piro
Download or read book Parallel Patterns of Shrinking Cities and Urban Growth written by Rocky Piro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focussing particularly on urban fringe and rural areas, this book addresses the parallel phenomena of growth and decline. In doing so, it not only broadens a debate which generally concentrates on urban municipalities, especially inner city areas, but also covers new ground by starting to build a new theoretical framework for the spatial planning related assessment of these phenomena. Bringing together contributions from internationally renowned authors, such as Sir Peter Hall, Steve Ward and Johann Jessen, the book compares international case studies and highlights their relationships with one another. It concludes by emphasizing common themes that are addressed, as well as showing applicability to other urban and rural regions. Overall, the book provides a timely and comprehensive analysis of the spatial consequences and related spatial planning concepts in theory and practice which aim to further sustainable development of city regions, urban fringe and rural areas experiencing growth and decline.

Book Synopsis Communal Christianity by : David Mayes
Download or read book Communal Christianity written by David Mayes and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Mayes proposes a new religious paradigm in early modern rural Germany. “Communal Christianity,” the religious practice prevalent among peasants in mid-sixteenth-century rural Upper Hesse is juxtaposed with the more formally organized “Confessional” sects (e.g. Lutheran, Calvinist). The author describes Communal Christianity’s characteristics and persistence in the face of attempts at confessionalization during the period of 1576-1648 and links its success in part to the decree of the 1555 Religious Peace of Augsburg that only one confessionalized Christian sect be officially recognized in a territory. Confessional sects became marginalized, and more locally well-established peasant communes retained power. The 1648 Peace of Westphalia encouraged reconciliation of confessionalized Christian sects, paradoxically spurring the decline of Communal Christianity in certain locales.
