Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?All Power to the Imagination!? is a history of the counterculture?s immensely influential role in West German cultural and political life. Sabine von Dirke opens with an examination of nascent countercultural movements in West Germany during the 1950s. She then moves to a nuanced account of the student movement of the 1960s, describing its adaptation of the theories of Marcuse, Adorno, and Benjamin, then recounting its attack on ?bourgeois? notions of the autonomy of art and culture. She next examines the subsequent development of a radical aesthetic and the effects of left-wing terrorism on Germany?s political climate. Later chapters focus on die tageszeitung, the ecology movement, and the rise of the Green Party. ø Von Dirke concludes by asking whether the evolution that this book traces?from Marxist-influenced critiques of culture and society to more diverse, less doctrinaire left-wing positions?represents progress or a betrayal of radical ideals. An ambitious study of the German left, this book is an important contribution to our understanding of postwar European history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress "The Many Languages of Comparative Literature" includes contributions that focus on the interplay between concepts of nation, national languages, and individual as well as collective identities. Because all literary communication happens within different kinds of power structures - linguistic, economic, political -, it often results in fascinating forms of hybridity. In the first of four thematic chapters, the papers investigate some of the ways in which discourses can establish modes of thinking, or how discourses are in turn controlled by active linguistic interventions, whether in the context of the patriarchy, war, colonialism, or political factions. The second thematic block is predominantly concerned with hybridity as an aspect of modern cultural identity, and the cultural and linguistic dimensions of domestic life and in society at large. Closely related, a third series of papers focuses on writers and texts analysed from the vantage points of exile and exophony, as well as theoretical contributions to issues of terminology and what it means to talk about transcultural phenomena. Finally, a group of papers sheds light on more overtly violent power structures, mechanisms of exclusion, Totalitarianism, torture, and censorship, but also resistance to these forms of oppression. In addition to these chapters, the volume also collects a number of thematically related group sections from the ICLA congress, preserving their original context.

This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this English translation and revision of her acclaimed German-language book, Elke Sturm-Trigonakis expands on Goethe's notion of Weltliteratur (1827) to propose that, owing to globalization, literature is undergoing a profound change in process, content, and linguistic practice. Rather than producing texts for a primarily national readership, modern writers can collate diverse cultural, literary, and linguistic traditions to create new modes of expression that she designates as "hybrid texts." The author introduces an innovative framework to analyse these new forms of expression that is based on comparative cultural studies and its methodology of contextual (systemic and empirical) approaches to the study of literature and culture, including the concepts of the macro-and micro-systems of culture and literature. To illustrate her proposition, Sturm-Trigonakis discusses selected literary texts that exhibit characteristics of linguistic and cultural hybridity, the concept of "in-between," and transculturality and thus are located in a space of a "new world literature." Examples include Gastarbeiterliteratur ("migrant literature") by authors such as Chiellino, Shami, and Atabay. The book is important reading for philologists, linguists, sociologists, and other scholars interested in the cultural and linguistic impact of globalization on literature and culture. The German edition of this volume was originally published as Global playing in der Literatur. Ein Versuch über die Neue Weltliteratur (2007) and it has been translated in collaboration with the author by Athanasia Margoni and Maria Kaisar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in Women in German Yearbook 7 demonstrate the breadth and originality of feminist scholarship in German studies. Contributors draw on recent theoretical work in literary criticism, sociology, philosophy, and psychology in analyses of works from the Baroque Age to the present. Myra Love confronts the paranormal, a hitherto unexplored aspect of Christa Wolf's writings. Mother figures in the novels of Ingeborg Drewitz are analyzed by Monika Shafi in the light of recent feminist work on mothering. In a study of Baroque writers, Ute Brandes begins to document women's influence on a developing bourgeois public sphere before the Age of Reason. Kay Goodman translates into English and introduces a letter by Bettina von Arnim that underscores von Arnim's appeal to contemporary feminists. In concluding essays British scholar Ricarda Schmidt surveys recent trends in German feminist criticism. Sarah Lennox draws on her experience as an American Germanist to suggest directions for meaningful, socially engaged feminist scholarship. In response to the rapid unification of Germany a special section of the volume is devoted to the literature and society of the former German Democratic Republic after the Wende (turning point). It includes original pieces by prize-winning writers Helga K”nigsdorf, Angela Krauss, and Waldtraut Lewin, as well as critical articles by literary scholar Eva Kaufmann and sociologist Irene D”lling--all from the former GDR. Dinah Dodds contributes an interview with writer Helga Sch_tz and Gisela Bahr shares excerpts from her diary of winter 1989-1990 in Berlin. Concluding the volume, Dorothy Rosenberg evaluates works on women in the former GDR published since the fall of the Berlin wall.

Book excerpt: "The 1997 London Heine Conference brought together leading scholars and critics from Austria, Britain and Germany. The essays collected in this volume offer a broad canvas of Heine's themes and techniques, his debts and his influence, the ancient and modern connections of his work, its epic and lyrical forms, together with materials and comparisons drawn from English, German, Russian, Jewish and Islamic sources, and the musical settings of his poems. The collection complements recent scholarship, much of which has explored Heine's theoretical and other prose works, by paying close attention once more to the inexhaustible riches of his poetry."
