Book Synopsis Nazi-Organized Recreation and Entertainment in the Third Reich by : Julia Timpe
Download or read book Nazi-Organized Recreation and Entertainment in the Third Reich written by Julia Timpe and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the activities of the Nazi regime's vast leisure programme. Shortly after coming to power in Germany, it began a large-scale undertaking to bring happiness and a good life to so-called 'Aryan' Germans, carried out by the Nazi leisure organization Kraft durch Freude. Julia Timpe traces Kraft durch Freude's practices and propaganda from 1933 through the Second World War, and analyses Nazi-organized sports classes, entertainment events, and beautification campaigns for industrial sites and the countryside, as well as Kraft durch Freude's activities in entertaining German soldiers and concentration camp guards. Contributing to newer scholarship which focuses on the integratory force of the Nazi promise of a unified 'racial community' of all 'Aryan' Germans, this book highlights that Kraft durch Freude's 'everyday production of joy' was central to Nazism, closely connected to the destructive side of the Third Reich, and ultimately a major reason for Nazism's success among the German population.
Book Synopsis Orphans Of Versailles by : Richard Blanke
Download or read book Orphans Of Versailles written by Richard Blanke and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lands Germany ceded to Poland after World War I included more than one million ethnic Germans for whom the change meant a sharp reversal of roles. The Polish government now confronted a German minority in a region where power relationships had been the other way around for more than a century. Orphans of Versailles examines the complex psychological and political situation of Germans consigned to Poland, their treatment by the Polish government and society, their diverse strategies for survival, their place in international relations, and the impact of National Socialism. Not a one-sided study of victimization, this book treats the contributions of both the Polish state and the German minority to the conflict that culminated in their mutual destruction. Based largely on research in European archives, it sheds new light on a key aspect of German-Polish relations, one that was long overshadowed by concern over the German revanchist threat and the hostility that subsequently dominated the German-Polish relationship. Thanks to the new political situation in central Europe, however, this topic can finally be addressed evenhandedly.
Book Synopsis Nazi Hunger Politics by : Gesine Gerhard
Download or read book Nazi Hunger Politics written by Gesine Gerhard and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, millions of Soviet soldiers in German captivity died of hunger and starvation. Their fate was not the unexpected consequence of a war that took longer than anticipated. It was the calculated strategy of a small group of economic planners around Herbert Backe, the second Reich Minister for Food and Agriculture. The mass murder of Soviet soldiers and civilians by Nazi food policy has not yet received much attention, but this book is about to change that. Food played a central political role for the Nazi regime and served as the foundation of a racial ideology that justified the murder of millions of Jews, prisoners of war, and Slavs. This book is the first to vividly and comprehensively address the topic of food during the Third Reich. It examines the economics of food production and consumption in Nazi Germany, as well as its use as a justification for war and as a tool for genocide. Offering another perspective on the Nazi regime’s desire for domination, Gesine Gerhard sheds light on an often-overlooked part of their scheme and brings into focus the very important role food played in the course of the Second World War.

Download or read book Weimar written by Michael H. Kater and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian Michael H. Kater chronicles the rise and fall of one of Germany’s most iconic cities in this fascinating and surprisingly provocative history of Weimar. Weimar was a center of the arts during the Enlightenment and hence the cradle of German culture in modern times. Goethe and Schiller made their reputations here, as did Franz Liszt and the young Richard Strauss. In the early twentieth century, the Bauhaus school was founded in Weimar. But from the 1880s on, the city also nurtured a powerful right-wing reactionary movement, and fifty years later, a repressive National Socialist regime dimmed Weimar’s creative lights, transforming the onetime artists’ utopia into the capital of its first Nazified province and constructing the Buchenwald death camp on its doorstep. Kater’s richly detailed volume offers the first complete history of Weimar in any language, from its meteoric eighteenth-century rise up from obscurity through its glory days of unbridled creative expression to its dark descent back into artistic insignificance under Nazi rule and, later, Soviet occupation and beyond.
Download or read book Blood and Soil written by Anna Bramwell and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A political biography of Darre, appointed National Peasant Leader and Minister of Food and Agriculture in 1933. Argues that his ecological ideas are still worthy of attention despite his racism. Although he believed in eugenics and Nordic racism, he did not emphasize their antisemitic aspect until after joining the Nazi Party in 1930, when he began to speak of the Jews as leaders of the capitalist urban threat to rural Germany and of an international Jewish conspiracy. He opposed anti-Jewish boycotts and delayed the Aryanization of Jewish land until 1940, not wanting his land reform program to be controlled by Nazi antisemitism. Although he was excluded from policy decisions after 1939, and dismissed in 1942, Darre was tried as a war criminal in 1949 and found guilty of participation in the Aryanization program and of expropriation of Polish and Jewish farmlands during the resettlement of ethnic Germans.
