Jahrhundert kommt der Interpretation der Ereignisse dieses kurzen Zeitabschnittes eine große Bedeutung zu, da sie zeigen, welche Folgen Hysterien auf die Menschen haben können, was gerade in der Zeit der Atomenergie verheerende Auswirkungen auf die Menschheit haben könnte. Die Einwohner von Salem hatten zwar nicht die Ressourcen, die den Menschen des 21. Jahrhunderts zur Verfügung stehen, doch führten die Ereignisse in Salem zu Misstrauen und der Angst vor Denunziationen innerhalb der Bevölkerung, so dass eine Verdächtigung gegen andere Personen zumeist die beste Verteidigung war. Die Ereignisse dieser Zeit beschäftigen seit über 300 Jahren die Historiker. Die verschiedensten Erklärungsansätze für das Verhalten der „besessenen“ Mädchen wurden entwickelt: Im 18. Jahrhundert sah man die Anfälle der Mädchen als Wiederaufleben des religiösen Eifers an (keine diabolische, sondern göttliche Visionen) , Paul Boyer und Stephen Nissenbaum erklären die Vorkommnisse anhand eines soziologischen Interpretationsansatzes und identifizieren die Gemeinde von Salem Village und deren divergierende Parteiungen als Ausgangspunkt für die Hexenverfolgungen , und Bernhard Rosenthal hält die Möglichkeit des wissentlichen Betruges seitens der Mädchen für die wahrscheinlichste Möglichkeit . Daneben gibt es noch Arbeiten, die sich mit psychologischen Ansätzen Antworten zu verschaffen suchen, und selbst medizinisch-biologische Modelle, so die Ergot-Theorie , werden in Betracht gezogen.

Des weiteren sind diese Hexenprozesse Kinderhexenprozesse, das heißt, dass die treibenden Kräfte in diesem Hexenprozess Minderjährige waren. Die Ursachen für das Ausbrechen der Hexenverfolgung in Salem sind aus meiner Sicht monokausal nicht zu erklären. Viele Historiker und Wissenschaftler haben seit jeher mehr oder weniger plausible Theorien aufgestellt. Diese reichen von einer Verschwörung des örtlichen Pastors über einen Dorfzwist zwischen den mächtigen Familien Porter und Putnam bis zu Theorien, die eine Vergiftung der Opfer mit Mutterkorn in Verbindung bringt. Die hier vorliegende Hausarbeit dient jedoch nicht dazu, herauszufinden welche Ursachen diese Prozesse hatten. Vielmehr soll der Fokus dieser Arbeit auf die Personen und den Prozess gelenkt werden. Lange nachdem die Hexenverfolgungen in Europa ein Enden nahmen, kam es in Salem, Massachusetts im Jahre 1692 zu einem außergewöhnlichen Ereignis: Zwischen Januar und November wurden als Resultat unzähliger Anschuldigungen und Prozesse 144 Personen der Hexerei beschuldigt und 20 öffentlich hingerichtet. Noch immer stellt es somit ein einzigartiges Ereignis in der Kolonialgeschichte Nordamerikas dar, fasziniert die Menschen und wirft Fragen nach Gründen auf. Wie kam es 1692 in Salem zu dieser Massenhysterie und irrationalen Beschuldigung unzähliger unschuldiger Menschen, insbesondere Frauen? Historiker haben seit jeher unterschiedlichste mehr oder weniger stichhaltige Thesen aufgestellt, welche von einem Versagen des Gouverneurs über die Panik wegen ständiger Angst vor Indianerangriffen bis zu Halluzinationen der Ankläger aufgrund einer Vergiftung durch Mutterkorn reichen. In der vorliegenden Hausarbeit wird der Versuch unternommen, eben dieser Frage auf den Grund zu gehen. Dafür wird besonders die zeitgenössische Quelle The Wonders of the Invisible World zur Hilfe gezogen, um anhand der damaligen Erklärungsversuche und Vorstellungen einige Theorien zu belegen. Zunächst wird die hier behandelte Hauptquelle erläutert und inhaltlich grob zusammengefasst. Im Folgenden werden in drei größeren Unterpunkten der puritanische Glaube, die äußeren Bedrohungen und das Rechtssystem in Salem und der Umgebung als Erklärungsversuche analysiert. Letztendlich wird in einer Schlussbetrachtung versucht, sich anhand dieser einer Gesamterklärung anzunähern.
