Letztendlich kann die vorliegende Hausarbeit Rückschlüsse darüber liefern inwieweit die Geschichtsdidaktik bereits in der Lage ist SuS im Hinblick auf interkulturelle Kompetenz zu lehren. Zu diesem Zweck wird die allgemeine Entwicklung in Deutschland hin zu einer „interkulturellen Erziehung und Bildung“ chronologisch dargestellt, bevor eine Definition des „interkulturellen Lernens/ interkulturelle Pädagogik“ folgt. Daran anschließend wird auf die Auswirkungen dieser allgemeinpädagogischen Disziplin auf die Geschichtsdidaktik eingegangen, indem in einem ersten Schritt das interkulturelle Geschichtslernen allgemein dargestellt wird und in einem zweiten Schritt auf die Umsetzungen interkulturellen Geschichtslernens eingegangen wird, bevor abschließend in Form eines Fazits über die Vor- und Nachteile beziehungsweise Erfolgschancen einer interkulturellen Erziehung und Bildung im Geschichtsunterricht resümiert wird.

In which countries does the Holocaust form part of classroom teaching? Are representations of the Holocaust always accurate, balanced and unprejudiced in curricula and textbooks? This study, carried out by UNESCO and the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, compares for the first time representations of the Holocaust in school textbooks and national curricula. Drawing on data which includes countries in which there exists no or little information about representations of the Holocaust, the study shows where the Holocaust is established in official guidelines, and contains a close textbook study, focusing on the comprehensiveness and accuracy of representations and historical narratives. The book highlights evolving practices worldwide and thus provides education stakeholders with comprehensive documentation about current trends in curricula directives and textbook representations of the Holocaust. It further formulates recommendations that will help policy-makers provide the educational means by which pupils may develop Holocaust literacy.

As the German Democratic Republic (GDR) promoted national identity and socialist consciousness, two of the most potent historical narratives to permeate youth education became tales of communist resistors who fought against fascism and the heroic deeds of the Red Army in World War II. These stories and iconic images illustrate the message that was presented to school-age children and adolescents in stages as they advanced through school and participated in the official communist youth organizations and other activities. This text delivers the first comprehensive study of youth antifascism in the GDR, extending scholarship beyond the level of the state to consider the everyday contributions of local institutions and youth mentors responsible for conveying stories and commemorative practices to generations born during WWII and after the defeat of fascism. While the government sought to use educators and former resistance fighters as ideological shock troops, it could not completely dictate how these stories would be told, with memory intermediaries altering at times the narrative and message. Using a variety of primary sources including oral history interviews, the author also assesses how students viewed antifascism, with reactions ranging from strong identification to indifference and dissent. Antifascist education and commemoration were never simply state-prescribed and were not as "participation-less" as some scholars and contemporary observers claim, even as educators fought a losing battle to maintain enthusiasm.

In particular, the following question has not been answered satisfactorily: what distinguishes a psychoanalytically oriented study of historical realities from a historical psychoanalysis? Skepticism and fear of collaboration dominate on both sides. Initiating a productive dialogue between historical studies and psychoanalysis seems to be plagued by ignorance and, at times, a sense of helplessness. Interdisciplinary collaborations are rare. Empirical research, formulation of theory, and the development of methods are essentially carried out within the conventional disciplinary boundaries. This volume undertakes to overcome these limitations by combining psychoanalytical and historical perspectives and thus exploring the underlying “unconscious” dimensions and by informing academic and nonacademic forms of historical memory.
