Auch im Erwachsenenalter spielt Bindung eine wichtige Rolle. Bindungserfahrungen, die in der Kindheit gesammelt wurden, fließen in das Bindungsverhalten mit ein und man zeigt einen entsprechenden Bindungsstil vor allem gegenüber seinem Partner. Bowlby (1973), Begründer der Bindungstheorie, war einer der ersten, die versuchten, dieses Verhalten theoretisch zu erklären. Seine Erkenntnisse werden im 2. Kapitel näher vorgestellt. Die Überlegungen, die Bowlby anstellte, wurden dann zunächst auf Kinder empirisch nachgewiesen (Ainsworth et al. 1978) und dann in der einer der ersten Untersuchungen von Hazan und Shaver (1987) auf Partnerschaften übertragen. Die vorliegende Arbeit gibt einen Überblick über theoretische Erkenntnisse zum Bindungsverhalten sowie zahlreichen empirischen Studien, die sich vor allem mit Bindungsverhalten in Zusammenhang mit der Zufriedenheit und Stabilität in der Partnerschaft untersuchten.

Hartup This volume amounts to an anniversary collection: It was 50 years ago that Lois Jack (1934) published the findings from what most investigators consider to be the first intervention study in this area. The experiment (later replicated and extended by Marjorie Page, 1936, and Gertrude Chittenden, 1942) concerned ascendant behavior in preschool children, which was defined to include: (a) The pursuit of one's own purposes against interference and (b) directing the behavior of others. Individual differences in ascendance were assumed to have some stability across time and, hence, to be important in personality development. But ascendance variations were also viewed as a function of the immediate situation. Among the conditions assumed to determine ascendance were "the individual's status in the group as expressed in others' attitudes toward him, his conception of these attitudes, and his previously formed social habits" (Jack, 1934, p. 10). Dr. Jack's main interest was to show that nonascendant children, identified on the basis of observations in the laboratory with another child, were different from their more ascendant companions in one important respect: They lacked self confidence. And, having demonstrated that, Dr. Jack devised a procedure for teaching the knowledge and skill to nonascendant children that the play materials required. She guessed, correctly, that this training would bring about an increase in the ascendance scores of these children.

Through studies from several European countries, the book showcases how legal regulations and social policies influence parental and child well-being after divorce and separation. It also illustrates how social policies are interwoven with the normative fabric of a country. For example, it is shown that father-child contact after separation is more intense in those countries which have adopted policies that encourage shared parenting. Correspondingly, countries that have adopted these regulations are at the forefront of more egalitarian gender role attitudes. Apart from a strong emphasis on the legal and social policy context, the studies in this volume adopt a longitudinal perspective and situate post-separation behaviour and well-being in the life course. The longitudinal perspective opens up new avenues for research to understand how behaviour and conditions prior or at divorce and separation affect later behaviour and well-being. As such this book is of special appeal to scholars of family research as well as to anyone interested in the role of divorce and separation in Europe in the 21st century.

The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people.
