Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English-language edition of this book was published in 1989 under the title "Enterprise-Wide Data Modelling." It introduced a new enterprise data model that has since gone on to enjoy widespread use as a reference model. Since that time, the author has continued to develop the representation of application problems, both on a theoretical basis using modeling languages and on a practical basis using real-world studies. This has led to so many new aspects that this second English-language edition (the original German version is now in its fifth edition) constitutes a completely new book. The new title expresses the stricter emphasis on business processes in contrast to the previous edition, which was geared more toward a functional structure. This approach reflects the trend toward process oriented structural and procedural organization in enterprises that is currently being supported by new means of information processing. Perhaps the most obvious way in which the second English-language edition differs from the first is in the increased number of pages. This is a direct result of the higher degree of detail and the more thorough problem description presented in the new edition. The degree of detail has increased in the case of those problems that are particularly important in terms of selecting and designing information systems in an industrial enterprise, e.g., the product description and CAM factory organization. This approach provides greater reality and thus facilitates a better understanding of the complex organism that is an industrial enterprise.

Book excerpt: As the field of bioethics has matured, increasing attention is being paid to how bioethical issues are treated in different moral and religious traditions and in different regions of the world. It is often difficult, however, to obtain timely information about these matters. The Bioethics Yearbook series analyzes how such issues as new reproductive techniques, abortion, maternal-fetal conflicts, care of seriously ill newborns, consent, confidentiality, equitable access, cost-containment, withholding and withdrawing treatment, euthanasia, the definition of death, and organ transplantation are being discussed in different religions and regions. Volume 5 discusses theological developments from 1992 to 1994 in Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, Hindu, Jehovah's Witness, Jewish, Latter-Day Saint, Lutheran, Methodist, Muslim, Pentecostal, and Presbyterian traditions.

Book excerpt: Jorg Bensinger, a group head of Audi corporation's R&D depart ment, had been waiting for long to find a chance to advertise his idea of a four-wheel drive for passenger cars to one of the board mem bers. Favorable experiences had been collected in drive tests with the lItis, a jeep-like car developed for use in the German army. The ex periences showed extremely good performance on icy roads and in snow. Bensinger's chance came in February of 1977, when he could talk to Ferdinand Piech, then R&D vice president of Audi and a technology buff. At this time Audi wasn't quite considered as a tech nological leader in the public. Technology based innovations were expected from Mercedes or Porsche by many customers. Piech, Ben singer, and others sensed that introducing the four-wheel drive to passenger cars could initiate a strategic change. Under great secrecy development work and prototype construction were commissioned. One obstacle seemed to be space requirements for the gear-box. Hans Nedvidek, former race-track engineer in the Mercedes team, was assigned to the team, and he developed an ingenious solution to the problem. It took until September of 1977 until other board mem bers were informed, and after some rallying the board found a con sensus in the next month to authorize further development steps for a four-wheel drive car. However, Audi is a subsidiary of Volkswagen Corp. The accord of the much bigger mother had to be secured.

Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: During the last decades, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been one of the major driving forces of worldwide economic growth, employment and prosperity. Moreover, they are considered to be of high importance in ensuring a friction-free adaptation to economical, technological, and social changes. Especially European economies, foremost Germany being the third largest economy in the world, highly depend on this class of companies as important contributors to the increase of living standards, productivity and competitiveness. As Hommel & Schneider (2003) conclude, any structural problem affecting this mass of economic 'backbone' businesses is thus likely to cause macroeconomic frictions to an economy as a whole Vice versa, it seems reasonable to argue that negative macro-level economic performance can be easily caused by an underperforming SME sector. A glance at the current business environment gives evidence that SMEs are navigating in a dramatic time of economic turmoil: Corporate bankruptcy in Germany e.g. has more than doubled during the last 10 years to a record level of almost 40,000 filed cases in 2003. Bankruptcy rates (i.e. 'Insolvenzquote') have raised to a peak in 2001 since the 1980's - a level, which has not been touched even in times of economic downturn within the last 15 years. The near future of many European SMEs is embossed by big threats and opportunities triggered by the upcoming EU member extension in May 2004, which will provide easy market access to SMEs from 10 East European, Baltic, and Mediterranean countries. As more than 35% of all German SMEs are not engaged outside Germany, the opportunity of gaining access to new sales markets could easily be dominated by impending competition threats an the price dimension in German regional markets. One might think that with respect to economic theory business failure is a problem that may not exist (or may be overrated) , as a certain level of failure would be expected in a competitive environment, due to mechanisms of resource allocation and the replacement of inefficient firms. However, such a large scale of corporate bankruptcies causes dramatic costs to an economy, as not all liabilities can be paid back by an insolvent firm. Moreover, indirect economic losses can occur, e.g. due to the destruction of established stakeholder relationships, and temporary vacuums in certain markets. Business failure thus is a central issue not only in [...]

Book excerpt: Agency Theory is a new branch of economics which focusses on the roles of information and of incentives when individuals cooperate with respect to the utilisation of resources. Basic approaches are coming from microeco nomic theory as well as from risk analysis. Among the broad variety of ap plications are: the many designs of contractual arrangements, organiza tions, and institutions as well as the manifold aspects of the separation of ownership and control so fundamental for business finance. After some twenty years of intensive research in the field of information economics it might be timely to present the most basic issues, questions, models, and applications. This volume Agency Theory, Information, and Incentives offers introductory surveys as well as results of individual rese arch that seem to shape that field of information economics appropriately. Some 30 authors were invited to present their subjects in such a way that students could easily become acquainted with the main ideas of informa tion economics. So the aim of Agency Theory, Information, and Incentives is to introduce students at an intermediate level and to accompany their work in classes on microeconomics, information economics, organization, management theory, and business finance. The topics selected form the eight sections of the book: 1. Agency Theory and Risk Sharing 2. Information and Incentives 3. Capital Markets and Moral Hazard 4. Financial Contracting and Dividends 5. External Accounting and Auditing 6. Coordination in Groups 7. Property Rights and Fairness 8. Agency Costs.

This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the enormous diversity and complexity of financial instruments, the current taxation of hybrid financial instruments and the remuneration derived therefrom are characterized by a neat division into dividend-generating equity and interest-generating debt as well as by a coexistence of source- and residence-based taxation. This book provides a comparative analysis of the classification of hybrid financial instruments in the national tax rules currently applied by Australia, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands as well as in the relevant tax treaties and EU Directives. Moreover, based on selected hybrid financial instruments, mismatches in these tax classifications, which lead to tax planning opportunities and risks and thus are in conflict with the single tax principle, are identified. To address these issues, the author provides reform options that are in line with the dichotomous debt-equity framework, as he/she suggests the coordination of either tax classifications or tax treatments.
