Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent retirees have a lot of adjustments to make, and we’re not talking only pant size here. This entertaining book on aging offers hilarious suggestions for handling some of life’s more daunting challenges--from prostate cancer to keeping fit, from overly complicated TV remotes to night driving. (McCoy wonders if other drivers in their 70s always see trees in the middle of the road after dark.) The author finds an amusing side to the problems of aging in this perceptive, on-the-mark collection of witty essays. There ARE ways of coping with growing older. As he points out, you don’t have much choice in the matter, so you might as well enjoy it. Humor pieces by McCoy have appeared in numerous newspapers, including at least two that are no longer in business. He would like to think there was no connection between their demise and his writing. “Did I Really Change My Underwear Every Day?” is his first published book. He worked for more than 45 years as a news writer, editor, producer and manager in Chicago, Munich and New York. Many younger journalists have told him how much they learned watching him handle big stories. Even if they didn’t mean it, he enjoyed hearing it. A native of Frankfort, Indiana, McCoy is a graduate of Indiana University as is his wife, Irene, a retired copywriter and publicist. They live on Long Island in New York.

Book excerpt: It's not every kid who falls out of his grandmother's moving car, is labeled a "vandal" by his hometown newspaper, and covers his face with a handkerchief in World History class but gets a passing grade. Say hello to Larry McCoy, a proud son of Frankfort, Indiana. His high school years were raucous ones with his talent for misbehaving so admired he was voted Class Clown in 1955. His was a world of fun and adventure--playing ball, trying to pull down girls' swimming trunks, emceeing a talent show, lying about damage to dad's car--and a world of wonderful food--breaded tenderloins, strawberry pie, and home-made noodles piled on mashed potatoes. He writes lovingly of his grandmother, of a favorite uncle and of his brother Jim who turned an empty field into a baseball diamond where second base was a cow patty. After high school, McCoy hit some bumps at Indiana University where his social life at first was limited to stocking shelves at the A&P. Still, he probably learned more there than he did in college. A flirtation with Catholicism strained relations with his devout Protestant parents. But goofiness and good times won out after McCoy met Irene Kristoff at I.U. She was smart, pretty, and thought he was funny. Rather than having her head examined, Irene contacted a minister and married Larry. He picked the title, "I Should Have Married My World History Teacher," without consulting his bride of more than 60 years. A very wise move.

He writes amusingly about adventures with his four grandkids on bikes, skis, diving boards, and picnics-from both his perspective and theirs. McCoy won awards as a newsman, but nothing has been as rewarding as hanging out with Nicholas, Rachel, Daniella, and Cristiana. Despite injuries and a pouty face or two, the grandkids still speak to him. Having saved them early on from the perils of parsley and pickles, he wishes they would take his word that sweet potatoes are good for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From potty-training expert and social worker Jamie Glowacki, who’s already helped over half a million families successfully toilet train their preschoolers, comes a newly revised and updated guide that’s “straight-up, parent-tested, and funny to boot” (Amber Dusick, author of Parenting: Illustrated with Crappy Pictures). Worried about potty training? Let Jamie Glowacki, potty-training expert, show you how it’s done. Her six-step, proven process to get your toddler out of diapers and onto the toilet has already worked for tens of thousands of kids and their parents. Here’s the good news: your child is probably ready to be potty trained EARLIER than you think (ideally, between 20–30 months), and it can be done FASTER than you expect (most kids get the basics in a few days—but Jamie’s got you covered even if it takes a little longer). If you’ve ever said to yourself: -How do I know if my kid is ready? -Why won’t my child poop in the potty? -How do I avoid “potty power struggles”? -How can I get their daycare provider on board? -My kid was doing so well—why is he regressing? -And what about nighttime?! Oh Crap! Potty Training can solve all of these (and other) common issues. This isn’t theory, you’re not bribing with candy, and there are no gimmicks. This is real-world, from-the-trenches potty training information—all the questions and all the answers you need to do it once and be done with diapers for good.

Book excerpt: A Tunisian novel shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (the ‘Arabic Booker’) This novel from one of Tunisia’s leading writers, the first of his works to be translated into English, narrates a love story in all its stages, in all its glorious and inglorious details. Moment by moment we become acquainted with the morning rituals, the desires of the flesh, the turbulence of the spirit, and even a few unattractive personal habits. It is a journey that takes us inside the nuances of what passes between two lovers, from the first glances of attraction to the final words of anger. It is a journey filled with all the hallmarks of the complex relationship between one man and one woman--the mystery and the ambiguity, the intricacy and the confusio--which, in the end, serve to expose its fragility. This is an intimate tale that manages to tell not only the story of two individuals, but also that of the collision of two cultures.

Book excerpt: Phil Gaimon’s Ask a Pro answers every question you’ve always wanted to ask about pro cycling…sort of. Gaimon gathers the best of his popular Q&A column—and pokes fun at his younger self. Despite the howling protests from his peers, no one’s ever been more willing to spill the beans on what it’s really like inside the pro cycling peloton than the sarcastic scribe Phil Gaimon. Building on the outrageous success of his hilarious 2014 debut, Pro Cycling on $10 a Day: From Fat Kid to Euro Pro, Gaimon gathers the absolute gems from his monthly Q&A feature column in VeloNews magazine into his new book, Ask a Pro: Deep Thoughts and Unreliable Advice from America’s Foremost Cycling Sage, adding a dose of fresh commentary and even more acerbic and sharp-eyed insights. With six years of material to work with—including his incredible rise into the pro ranks, the devastating loss of his contract for 2015, and his bold return to the Big League—Gaimon covers every possible topic from the team dinner table to the toilet with plenty of stops along the way. Gaimon offers wise-ass (and sometimes earnest) answers to fan questions like: How much chamois cream should I use? I’ve started shaving my legs. How can I be accepted by my friends? What do you do to protect yourself when you know you’re about to crash? How many bikes does my husband really need? What’s the best victory celebration? Do you practice yours? In women’s cycling, what is the proper definition of a pro? What do you say to someone if they honk or almost hit you? Do you name your bikes? What do pros think when they see a recreational cyclist in a full pro kit or riding a pro-level bike? Can you take your bike apart and put it back together? How bad does the weather have to be to call off a training ride? How do you know when it’s time to change a tire? When you’re in a breakaway all day, do riders form a future friendship? Riders keep complaining about "unsafe" weather at races. When did pro cyclists turn into such wussies? How do the pros define a "crash"? Gaimon wields his outsider’s wit to cast a cock-eyed gaze at the peculiar manners, mores, and traditions that make the medieval sport of cycling so irresistible to watch. Ask a Pro includes new resources from Gaimon, too, including his Cookie Map of America, dubious advice on winning the race buffet, a cautionary guide for host housing, Phil’s pre-race warm-up routine, and a celebrity baker’s recipe for The Phil Cookie.

Book excerpt: Fans of the Alaskan classic ONE MAN’S WILDERNESS will enjoy reading this memoir of how its author, Sam Keith, and its subject, Dick Proenneke, first met. After serving as a US Marine during World War II and attending college on the GI Bill, Sam Keith decided to seek adventure and acceptance in Alaska. He arrived on Kodiak Island in July, 1952, where he secured a job as a laborer on the Adak Navy base. He befriended a group of like-minded men there, including Dick Proenneke, who shared a love of the outdoors, hard work, and self-reliance. Keith explored the wilds of South Central Alaska while working on the Navy base, and later as a Stream Guard and Enforcement Patrolman. In his hunting and fishing trips with Dick and his friends, Keith found almost everything he sought. But at the end of three years, Keith decided to go Outside to pursue other dreams. Dick Proenneke tells him, “Sam, you know right well you don’t want to leave this country. Don’t give up on it. Me and you got to figure something out.” In 1973, Keith went on to write ONE MAN'S WILDERNESS: AN ALASKAN ODYSSEY, based on his dear friend’s journals and photography. It was reissued in 1999 and won a National Outdoor Book Award (NOBA). In 2003, portions of text from the book and some of Proenneke's 16mm movies were used in Alone in the Wilderness, which began appearing on US public television stations. The documentary follows Proenneke as he builds a log cabin with only hand tools, and includes reflections on wildlife, weather, and the natural scenery he sees around him. Sam Keith passed away in 2003. But in 2013, his son-in-law, children’s book author/illustrator Brian Lies, discovered in an archive box in their garage a book manuscript, originally written in 1974 after the publication of ONE MAN’S WILDERNESS. FIRST WILDERNESS is the story of Keith’s own experiences, at times harrowing, funny, and fascinating. Along with the original manuscript are photos and excerpts from his journals, letters, and notebooks, woven in to create a compelling and poignant memoir of search and discovery.
