Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic encyclopedia of symbols by Catalan polymath Joan Cirlot that illuminates the symbolic underpinnings of myth, modern psychology, literature, and art. Juan Eduardo Cirlot’s A Dictionary of Symbols is a feat of scholarship, an act of the imagination, and a tool for contemplation, as well as a work of literature, a reference book that is as indispensable as it is brilliant and learned. Cirlot was a composer, a poet, an art critic, and a champion of modern art whose interest in surrealism helped to bring him to the study of symbolism. Carl Jung, Mircea Eliade, René Guénon, Erich Fromm, and Gaston Bachelard also helped to shape his thinking in a book that explores the space between the world at large and the world within, where, as Cirlot sees it, nothing is meaningless, everything is significant, and everything is in some way related to something else. Running from “abandonment” to “zone” by way of “flute” and “whip,” spanning the cultures of the world, and including a wealth of visual images to further bring the reality of the symbol home, A Dictionary of Symbols, here published for the first time in English in its original, significantly enlarged form, is a luminous and illuminating investigation of the works of eternity in time.

The main part of the dictionary consists of alphabetically arranged articles concerned with basic logical theories and some other selected topics. Within each article a set of concepts is defined in their mutual relations. This way of defining concepts in the context of a theory provides better understand ing of ideas than that provided by isolated short defmitions. A disadvantage of this method is that it takes more time to look something up inside an extensive article. To reduce this disadvantage the following measures have been adopted. Each article is divided into numbered sections, the numbers, in boldface type, being addresses to which we refer. Those sections of larger articles which are divided at the first level, i.e. numbered with single numerals, have titles. Main sections are further subdivided, the subsections being numbered by numerals added to the main section number, e.g. I, 1.1, 1.2, ... , 1.1.1, 1.1.2, and so on. A comprehensive subject index is supplied together with a glossary. The aim of the latter is to provide, if possible, short defmitions which sometimes may prove sufficient. As to the use of the glossary, see the comment preceding it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarkable progress continues to be made in mathematical sciences. This advancement has made inter-relationships amongst various branches within mathematics and with other branches of science highly evolving; leading to newer 'terms' being invented and getting added. These additions make mathematics a little more complex. Emerging complexity translates into more difficulties for students in grasping the problem. And what makes the comprehension problematic? It is the introduction of 'terms', their definition and how to apply them in physical, chemical, biological, biotechnology, and social sciences works. And if these terms are not adequately explained, students and other interested readers face a herculean task in understanding what the question is all about, and unless readers clearly understand the terminology, finding a solution is next to impossible. This book contains mathematical terms related to arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, analytic geometry, differential & integral calculus and differential equations, probability, statistics, logic etc. Appendices in the form of important formulas from algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, logarithms and antilogarithms have been added. A few entries contain cross references indicating where to find further applications of the topic under discussion. It is an ideal manual for mathematics complete with illustrative diagrams and formulas. Inclusion of Greek Alphabets, metric systems and other useful mathematical symbols in the book helps make the dictionary a complete mathematical reference tool.
