Book excerpt: This accessible new textbook offers a detailed overview of the key concepts and current issues in international security studies. We are all interested in "security". We search for it, we constantly pursue it, we deny it to others, and when we achieve it for ourselves, we relish it. Undoubtedly, feeling secure and well protected is one of humankind's most cherished goals. Our incessant search for security, however, remains one the most fiercely debated topics and to this day we remain unconvinced of the best way to achieve what is, for many, an elusive commodity. This is compounded by a number of problems facing thinkers in the field. As a concept, "security" refers simply to the safety or protection of some entity. The first problem, therefore, is that confusion reigns over whether it is the state, individual or some other unit that ought to be prioritized and made secure. To use the correct jargon, what should the "referent object" be. The debate rages primarily between those who advocate the "state" and those who argue that the basic unit has to be the individual, but that is not the end of it since the second, related, problem, is the nature of the threats that face us. Again the academic world is divided between a variety opinions, with a significant number insisting that military force is central to world politics and that the primary actors are states. However, an increasingly influential viewpoint is that the focus on states and military force is far too narrow and does not consider a wider range of threats that both states and the individual have to face. Finally, these problems are further compounded by what is perhaps the most important issue - defining the concept of "security". As the opening chapters of this book demonstrate, this problem remains central to the field of Security Studies and we are nowhere near resolving it. One way to manoeuvre safely within this minefield is to look at the possible definitions found in the various theoretical traditions. The many definitions of "security" are largely dependent upon which theory is acting as a lens at that particular point. This does help us, but only on a superficial level, since the rich array of perspectives available to us demonstrate that the concept is far from simple. Indeed, its multi-dimensional nature causes great confusion amongst those approaching the field for the very first time. Nevertheless, Security Studies is now a well-established discipline with a rich array of traditions each of which has something to say about the concept of security, the referent object and the nature of threats facing us. This textbook will be essential reading for students of international security, critical security, human security and war and conflict studies.

Book Synopsis The Information Security Dictionary by : Urs E. Gattiker
Download or read book The Information Security Dictionary written by Urs E. Gattiker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something for Everyone If this book is to succeed and help readers, its cardinal virtue must be to provide a simple reference text. It should be an essential addition to an information security library. As such it should also serve the purpose of being a quick refresher for terms the reader has not seen since the days when one attended a computing science program, information security course or workshop. As a reference work, THE INFORMATION SECURITY DICTIONARY provides a relatively complete and easy-to-read explanation of common se- rity, malware, vulnerability and infrastructure protection terms, without causing much damage to the usually slim student pocketbook. This dictionary can help non-specialistreaders better understand the infor- tion security issues encountered in their work or studying for their certification examination or whilst doing a practical assignment as part of a workshop. This book is also essential to a reference collection for an organization’s system personnel. Special attention is paid to terms which most often prevent educated readers from understanding journal articles and books in cryptology, computing science, and information systems, in addition to applied fields that build on those disciplines, such as system design, security auditing, vulnera- lity testing, and role-based access management. The dictionary provides defi- tions that enable readers to get through a difficult article or passage. We do not, for the most part, directly explain how to conduct research or how to implement the terms briefly described.

Book Synopsis Critical Approaches to International Security by : Karin M. Fierke
Download or read book Critical Approaches to International Security written by Karin M. Fierke and published by Polity Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Cold War the concept of international security was traditionally understood in military terms as the threat or use of force by states. The end of East-West hostilities, however, brought new 'critical' perspectives to the fore as scholars sought to explain the emergence of new challenges to international stability, such as environmental degradation, immigration and terrorism. 'Critical Approaches to International Security' is the first book to offer a wide-ranging and comprehensive analysis of the field of critical security studies. It maps the evolution of debates about security from the end of the Cold War to the present day, arguing that the conceptual and methodological innovations of critical security studies are crucial for understanding many contemporary international developments. Organized around a range of core concepts that have defined various critical approaches, the book guides the reader through a wide range of literature and debates. Topics covered include: the relationship between security and change, identity, the production of danger, trauma, human insecurity and emancipation. The book explores the meaning and use of these concepts and their relevance to real-life situations ranging from NATO expansion, conflict in the Balkans, migration, suffering in war, failed states and state-building, the war on terror and Hurricane Katrina. This book makes a significant and original contribution to the study of international relations and security studies and will be of great value to students and scholars of international relations and security studies.
