Book excerpt: For a one-semester freshman or sophomore level course on the fundamentals of proof writing or transition to advanced mathematics course. Rather than teach mathematics and the structure of proofs simultaneously, this text first introduces logic as the foundation of proofs and then demonstrates how logic applies to mathematical topics. This method ensures that the students gain a firm understanding of how logic interacts with mathematics and empowers them to solve more complex problems in future math courses.

Book Synopsis Revival of the Fittest by : Carolyn Annand
Download or read book Revival of the Fittest written by Carolyn Annand and published by North Light Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technology has dramatically upgraded the appearance and encouraged the proliferation of many contemporary versions of the great classic typefaces. This volume, from the publishers of Print magazine, explores the phenomenon creating a surge of interest in these revivals. Illustrated with digital versions of Bodoni, Caslon, Baskerville and others, these faces are contrasted with their mechanical originals in settings for magazines, books, ads and Web sites. Also included are interviews with leading typeface revivalists such as Jonathan Hoefler, Tobias Frere-Jones and Matthew Carter who comment on the appeal of their versions of these faces, as well as type designers such as Johnathan Barnbrook who have been influenced by the classics in developing exciting original creations. With innovative applications of the featured faces, the book seeks to demonstrate that classic means cutting edge in the digital age.

Book Synopsis Protoalgebraic Logics by : Janusz Czelakowski
Download or read book Protoalgebraic Logics written by Janusz Czelakowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to present recent ideas in logic centered around the notion of a consequence operation. We wish to show these ideas in a factually and materially connected way, i.e., in the form of a consistent theory derived from several simple assumptions and definitions. These ideas have arisen in many research centers. The thorough study of their history can certainly be an exciting task for the historian of logic; in the book this aspect of the theory is being played down. The book belongs to abstract algebraic logic, the area of research that explores to a large extent interconnections between algebra and logic. The results presented here concern logics defined in zero-order languages (Le., quantifier-free sentential languages without predicate symbols). The reach of the theory expounded in the book is, in fact, much wider. The theory is also valid for logics defined in languages of higer orders. The problem of transferring the theory to the level of first-order languages has been satisfactorily solved and new ideas within this area have been put forward in the work of Blok and Pigozzi [1989].
Book Synopsis The Lambda Calculus by : H.P. Barendregt
Download or read book The Lambda Calculus written by H.P. Barendregt and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1984 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revised edition contains a new chapter which provides an elegant description of the semantics. The various classes of lambda calculus models are described in a uniform manner. Some didactical improvements have been made to this edition. An example of a simple model is given and then the general theory (of categorical models) is developed. Indications are given of those parts of the book which can be used to form a coherent course.
Download or read book Boolean Functions written by Yves Crama and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-16 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by prominent experts in the field, this monograph provides the first comprehensive, unified presentation of the structural, algorithmic and applied aspects of the theory of Boolean functions. The book focuses on algebraic representations of Boolean functions, especially disjunctive and conjunctive normal form representations. This framework looks at the fundamental elements of the theory (Boolean equations and satisfiability problems, prime implicants and associated short representations, dualization), an in-depth study of special classes of Boolean functions (quadratic, Horn, shellable, regular, threshold, read-once functions and their characterization by functional equations) and two fruitful generalizations of the concept of Boolean functions (partially defined functions and pseudo-Boolean functions). Several topics are presented here in book form for the first time. Because of the depth and breadth and its emphasis on algorithms and applications, this monograph will have special appeal for researchers and graduate students in discrete mathematics, operations research, computer science, engineering and economics.
Book Synopsis The Unprovability of Consistency by : George Boolos
Download or read book The Unprovability of Consistency written by George Boolos and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unprovability of Consistency is concerned with connections between two branches of logic: proof theory and modal logic. Modal logic is the study of the principles that govern the concepts of necessity and possibility; proof theory is, in part, the study of those that govern provability and consistency. In this book, George Boolos looks at the principles of provability from the standpoint of modal logic. In doing so, he provides two perspectives on a debate in modal logic that has persisted for at least thirty years between the followers of C. I. Lewis and W. V. O. Quine. The author employs semantic methods developed by Saul Kripke in his analysis of modal logical systems. The book will be of interest to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in logic, mathematics and philosophy, as well as to specialists in those fields.
