Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activity in any theoretical area is usually stimulated by new experimental techniques and the resulting opportunity of measuring phenomena that were previously inaccessible. Such has been the case in the area under consideration here beginning about fifteen years ago when the possibility of studying chemical reactions in crossed molecular beams captured the imagination of physical chemists, for one could imagine investigating chemical kinetics at the same level of molecular detail that had previously been possible only in spectroscopic investigations of molecular stucture. This created an interest among chemists in scattering theory, the molecular level description of a bimolecular collision process. Many other new and also powerful experimental techniques have evolved to supplement the molecular beam method, and the resulting wealth of new information about chemical dynamics has generated the present intense activity in molecular collision theory. During the early years when chemists were first becoming acquainted with scattering theory, it was mainly a matter of reading the physics literature because scattering experiments have long been the staple of that field. It was natural to apply the approximations and models that had been developed for nuclear and elementary particle physics, and although some of them were useful in describing molecular collision phenomena, many were not. The most relevant treatise then available to students was Mott and Massey's classic The Theory of Atomic Collisions, * but, as the title implies, it dealt only sparingly with the special features that arise when at least one of the collision partners is a molecule.

The joint meeting features 446 including 74 invited lectures and 39 poster sessions. This book is divided into 26 chapters, which reflect the analytical spectroscopic topics covered in 20 sessions, including plasma emission spectrometry, DC arc, spark and other emission spectrometry, and hydride generation technique for atomic spectrometry. Other chapters deal with furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry, atomic spectrometric detection systems for separation analysis, atomic fluorescence and scattering spectroscopy, flame atomic absorption spectrometry, spectroscopy for chemical state analysis, spectroscopy for surface and interface analysis. The remaining chapters discuss the application of computers in analytical spectroscopy, developments in laser spectroscopy, application to life science, environmental and geochemical applications, X-ray analysis, UV-VIS spectroscopy, IR and Raman spectroscopy, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and photoacoustic spectrometry. This book will be of value to analytical chemists and related scientists and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive review of the present knowledge and current problems concerning physical-chemical aspects of the behavior of excess electrons in various media. The book's 13 chapters strike a balance between theoretical and experimental accounts and provide in-depth presentations of specific subjects. Among the several topics discussed in this stimulating volume are primary interactions, transport, and relaxation of excess electrons of a few tens of electron-Volts in various solid and liquid materials; energetics and transport properties of electrons after thermalization in non-polar dielectric liquids; quantum simulation methods; and electron solvation in polar liquids and of excess electrons trapped in polar matrices at low temperature. Applications of these concepts are discussed as well, including hot electron transport in silicon dioxide, the fate of excess electrons created in polar dielectric liquids by photoelectrochemical methods or by cathodic generation, and excess electron production and decay in organic microheterogeneous systems. Researchers, instructors, and engineers working in the radiation sciences, condensed-matter physics, chemical physics, biophysics, photochemistry, and the biochemistry of electron transfer and electrochemistry should consider this book to be an invaluable reference resource.

Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "Linking the Gaseous and Condensed Phases of Matter: The Behavior of Slow Electrons" was held at Patras, Greece, September 5-18, 1993. The organizers of the Patras ASI felt that the study of the electronic properties of matter in various states of aggregation has advanced to a point where further progress required the interfacing of the phases of matter in order to find out and to understand how the microscopic and macroscopic properties of materials and processes change as we go from low pressure gas to the condensed phase. This approach is of foremost significance both from the point of view of basic research and of applications. Linking the electronic properties of the gaseous and condensed phases of matter is a fascinating new frontier of science embracing scientists not only from physics and chemistry but also from the life sciences and engineering. The Patras ASI brought together some of the world's foremost experts who work in the field of electronic properties of molecular gases, clusters, liquids, and solids. The thirty five lectures given at the meeting as well as the twenty nine poster papers presented and the formal and informal discussions that took place focused largely on the behavior of slow electrons in matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Physical Chemistry and Chemical Physics introduces possibly unfamiliar areas, explains important experimental and computational techniques, and describes modern endeavors. The encyclopedia quickly provides the basics, defines the scope of each subdiscipline, and indicates where to go for a more complete and detailed explanation. Particular attention has been paid to symbols and abbreviations to make this a user-friendly encyclopedia. Care has been taken to ensure that the reading level is suitable for the trained chemist or physicist. The encyclopedia is divided in three major sections: FUNDAMENTALS: the mechanics of atoms and molecules and their interactions, the macroscopic and statistical description of systems at equilibrium, and the basic ways of treating reacting systems. The contributions in this section assume a somewhat less sophisticated audience than the two subsequent sections. At least a portion of each article inevitably covers material that might also be found in a modern, undergraduate physical chemistry text. METHODS: the instrumentation and fundamental theory employed in the major spectroscopic techniques, the experimental means for characterizing materials, the instrumentation and basic theory employed in the study of chemical kinetics, and the computational techniques used to predict the static and dynamic properties of materials. APPLICATIONS: specific topics of current interest and intensive research. For the practicing physicist or chemist, this encyclopedia is the place to start when confronted with a new problem or when the techniques of an unfamiliar area might be exploited. For a graduate student in chemistry or physics, the encyclopedia gives a synopsis of the basics and an overview of the range of activities in which physical principles are applied to chemical problems. It will lead any of these groups to the salient points of a new field as rapidly as possible and gives pointers as to where to read about the topic in more detail.

Book excerpt: In this work, molecule-surface scattering is studied for the diatomic molecule nitric oxide (NO) and the polyatomic molecule formaldehyde. Following the approach of "molecular surface science", elementary steps in the interaction of molecules with surfaces are revealed using a molecular beam surface scattering apparatus which permits the examination of the collision process under well-defined conditions. This requires that the initial molecular degrees of freedom are well controlled and that the final distribution over the molecular degrees of freedom can be obtained resolving single quantu...
