Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diary, Sketches and Reviews, 1850 This volume contains an imperfect daily record of some pleasant scenes in the lands beyond the sea, being simply the original notes made on the spot, at the close of each day in the pilgrimage, and is now printed merely for their preservation and for private use. In addition to the Diary will be found some reviews and sketches of kindred subjects, nearly all of which were written whilst travelling: these have been already printed on the dates and in the publications mentioned in their titles. They were mostly private letters, addressed to friends in Europe and in this country, and, by them, were some time since given to the press. This Diary and the Sketches are now submitted to the indulgent eye of friendship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book 1650-1850 written by Kevin L. Cope and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With issue twenty-four of 1650–1850, this annual enters its second quarter-century with a new publisher, a new look, a new editorial board, and a new commitment to intellectual and artistic exploration. As the diversely inventive essays in this first issue from the Bucknell University Press demonstrate, the energy and open-mindedness that made 1650–1850 a success continue to intensify. This first Bucknell issue includes a special feature that explores the use of sacred space in what was once incautiously called “the age of reason.” A suite of book reviews renews the 1650–1850 legacy of full-length and unbridled evaluation of the best in contemporary Enlightenment scholarship. These lively and informative reviews celebrate the many years that book review editor Baerbel Czennia has served 1650–1850 and also make for an able handoff to Samara Anne Cahill of Nanyang Technological University, who will edit the book review section beginning with our next volume. Most important of all, this issue serves as an invitation to scholars to offer their most creative and thoughtful work for consideration for publication in 1650–1850. About the annual journal 1650-1850 1650-1850 publishes essays and reviews from and about a wide range of academic disciplines—literature (both in English and other languages), philosophy, art history, history, religion, and science. Interdisciplinary in scope and approach, 1650-1850 emphasizes aesthetic manifestations and applications of ideas, and encourages studies that move between the arts and the sciences—between the “hard” and the “humane” disciplines. The editors encourage proposals for “special features” that bring together five to seven essays on focused themes within its historical range, from the Interregnum to the end of the first generation of Romantic writers. While also being open to more specialized or particular studies that match up with the general themes and goals of the journal, 1650-1850 is in the first instance a journal about the artful presentation of ideas that welcomes good writing from its contributors. First published in 1994, 1650-1850 is currently in its 24th volume. ISSN 1065-3112. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.
Book Synopsis "The Art-Journal and Fine Art Publishing in Victorian England, 1850?880 " by : Katherine Haskins

This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on an era that both inherited and irretrievably altered the form and the content of earlier art production, The Art-Journal and Fine Art Publishing in Victorian England, 1850-1880 argues that fine art practices and the audiences and markets for them were influenced by the media culture of art publishing and journalism in substantial and formative ways, perhaps more than at any other time in the history of English art. The study centers on forms of Victorian picture-making and the art knowledge systems defining them, and draws on the histories of art, literature, journalism, and publishing. The historical example employed in the book is that of the more than 800 steel-plate prints after paintings published in the London-based Art-Journal between 1850 and 1880. The cultural phenomenon of the Art Journal print is shown to be a key connector in mid-Victorian art appreciation by drawing out specific tropes of likeness. This study also examines the important links between paint and print; the aesthetic values and domestic aspirations of the Victorian middle class; and the inextricable intertwining of fine art and 'trade' publishing.

This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Diary North and South, 1863, Vol. 2 of 2 Down the Mississippi - Hotel at Vicksburg - Dinner - Public meeting - News of the progress of the war - Slavery and England - Jackson - Governor Pettus - Insecurity of life - Strong Southern enthusiasm - Troops bound for the North - Approach to Memphis - Slaves for sale - Memphis - General Pillow. Friday, June 14th. - Last night with my good host from his plantation to the great two-storied steamer General Quitman, at Natchez. She was crowded with planters, soldiers and their families, and as the lights shone out of her windows, looked like a walled castle blazing from double lines of embrasures. The Mississippi is assuredly the most uninteresting river in the world, and I can only describe it hereabout by referring to the account of its appearance which I have already given - not a particle of romance in spite of oratorical patriots and prophets, can ever shine from its depths, sacred to cat and buffalo fish, or vivify its turbid waters. Before noon we were in sight of Vicksburg, which is situated on a high bank or bluff on the left bank of the river, about 400 miles above New Orleans and some 120 miles from Natchez.
