Book Synopsis The 4th Michigan Infantry in the Civil War by : Martin N. Bertera
Download or read book The 4th Michigan Infantry in the Civil War written by Martin N. Bertera and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating narrative tells the story of a remarkable regiment at the center of Civil War history. The real-life adventure emerges from accounts of scores of soldiers who served in the 4th Michigan Infantry, gleaned from their diaries, letters, and memoirs; the reports of their officers and commanders; the stories by journalists who covered them; and the recollections of the Confederates who fought against them. The book includes tales of life in camp, portraying the Michigan soldiers as everyday people—recounting their practical jokes, illnesses, political views, personality conflicts, comradeship, and courage. The book also tells the true story of what happened to Colonel Harrison Jeffords and the 4th Michigan when the regiment marched into John Rose's wheat field on a sweltering early July evening at Gettysburg. Beyond the myths and romanticized newspaper stories, this account presents the historical evidence of Jeffords's heroic, yet tragic, hand-to-hand struggle for his regiment's U.S. flag.

Download or read book Decisions at Shiloh written by Dave Powell and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Battle of Shiloh took place April 6-7, 1862, between the Union Army of the Tennessee under General Ulysses S. Grant and the Confederate Army of Mississippi under General Albert Sidney Johnston. Johnston launched a surprise attack on Grant but was mortally wounded during the battle. General Beauregard, taking over command, chose not to press the attack through the night, and Grant, reinforced with troops from the Army of the Ohio, counterattacked the morning of April 7th and turned the tide of the battle. Intended for a general readership, Decisions at Shiloh introduces readers to critical decisions made by both Union and Confederate commanders who attempted to achieve strategic and tactical victories under considerable duress. Like previous volumes in this series, this book contains maps, photographs, and a guided tour of the battlefield"--
Download or read book Union Jacks written by Michael J. Bennett and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have given a great deal of attention to the lives and experiences of Civil War soldiers, but surprisingly little is known about navy sailors who participated in the conflict. Michael J. Bennett remedies the longstanding neglect of Civil War seamen in this comprehensive assessment of the experience of common Union sailors from 1861 to 1865. To resurrect the voices of the "Union Jacks," Bennett combed sailors' diaries, letters, and journals. He finds that the sailors differed from their counterparts in the army in many ways. They tended to be a rougher bunch of men than the regular soldiers, drinking and fighting excessively. Those who were not foreign-born, escaped slaves, or unemployed at the time they enlisted often hailed from the urban working class rather than from rural farms and towns. In addition, most sailors enlisted for pragmatic rather than ideological reasons. Bennett's examination provides a look into the everyday lives of sailors and illuminates where they came from, why they enlisted, and how their origins shaped their service. By showing how these Union sailors lived and fought on the sea, Bennett brings an important new perspective to our understanding of the Civil War.
