Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Saving Children, Jack Werber describes in detail what life in Buchenwald was like, painting a haunting picture of his daily struggle for survival. But Werber did more than survive; he made saving children his special mission. In what is one of the most amazing stories of the Holocaust, Jack Werber helped to save the lives of some seven hundred Jewish children who had arrived at Buchenwald in late 1944, including Nobel Prize-winner Elie Wiesel and Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, former Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel. At great personal risk, he arranged for the children to be hidden in various barracks with false working papers. He and his group actually started a school where the children studied Jewish history, music, and Hebrew. These activities gave the youngsters hope that they might survive and ultimately most of them did. Werber’s entire family—his wife, daughter, parents, and seven siblings—were all murdered by the Nazis. "There was no reason to go on," he had thought, but seeing the children transformed his outlook. He resolved to prevent them from meeting his daughter’s fate. Out of 3,200 Polish prisoners who entered the camp together with Werber, only eleven were alive by war’s end. Of those, he was the only Jew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Jewish Studies. Memoir. Translated from the German by Hilda Reach and Merrill Leffler. ONE WHO CAME BACK is Josef Katz's account of his four years of daily terror in Riga, Kaiserwald, Stutthof and numbers of smaller Nazi labor camps. Liberated in 1945, he began writing his diary in pencil in Germany in 1946, finishing it a year later in New York where he arrived with his wife Irene, also a survivor of Riga. "Every incident, every experience, every horror is exactly as it occurred," Katz wrote in his original German introduction. The diary remained in a drawer until the Herzl Press published the book in 1973 in an English translation by Hilda Reach; it was published in German in 1976. A number historians such as Martin Gilbert (The Holocaust: The Jewish Tragedy) and Leni Yahil (The Holocaust) have referred to the book's significance as a primary source for understanding what slave laborers endured in the Nazi camps. This edition adds a map and foreword by Herman Taube, author of 20 books of fiction and poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable chronicle of life and death in the Jewish Ghetto of Kovno, Lithuania, from June 1941 to January 1944, was written under conditions of extreme danger by a Ghetto inmate and secretary of the Jewish Council. After the war, in order to escape from Lithuania, the author was forced to entrust the diary to leaders of the Escape movement; eventually it made its way to his new home in Israel. The diary incorporates Avraham Tory’s collections of official documents, Jewish Council reports, and original photographs and drawings made in the Ghetto. It depicts in grim detail the struggle for survival under Nazi domination, when—if not simply carted off and murdered in a random “action”—Jews were exploited as slave labor while being systematically starved and denied adequate housing and medical care. Through it all, Tory’s overriding purpose was to record the unimaginable events of these years and to memorialize the determination of the Jews to sustain their community life in the midst of the Nazi terror. Of the surviving diaries originating in the principal European Ghettos of this period, Tory’s is the longest written by an adult, a dramatic and horrifying document that makes an invaluable contribution to contemporary history. Tory provides an insider’s view of the desperate efforts of Ghetto leaders to protect Jews. Martin Gilbert’s masterly introduction establishes the authenticity of the diary, presents its events against the backdrop of the war in Europe, and considers the crucial questions of collaboration and resistance.

As humans, we tend to deny things that bring us discomfort. Especially talking about rape during conflict and war. People tend to struggle in finding ways to share the indescribable. Because the images and ideas associated with rape are so intense and disturbing, opportunities to create change and awareness through dialogue are a challenge at best. This cloak of silence, however, is what keeps rape and sexual violence alive and ominous. My ongoing work in the field as a therapist has brought me the opportunity to listen to war rape survivors' experiences. I have thus far heard over 200 accounts, which is a number steadily increasing. These brave women and girls allowed themselves to share with me something terrifying and previously unspeakable. Many have held on to their pain in silence, alone. They shared their humble beginnings, their ideals; and their stark realities during and following their rape, as well their aftermaths, and their healing. So many survivors have made the conscious choice of speaking out and being visible, even if they come from cultures that may be less than supportive to women who are the victims of sexual violence. Before I began work within the field of rape and sexual violence awareness, I was like many other people living in my own comfort bubble. Back then, I was insulated by my values. I pursued my ideas without a deeper understanding of the complexity of war rape survivors' physical, emotional and social experiences, as well as the complex trauma that they were struggling with. Working with war-rape survivors quickly popped my comfort bubble. I realized my own tendency to deny sources of discomfort. I started to confront myself with the overwhelming reality that war-rape survivors face every single day. Listening to survivors' experiences and working with them as they address their trauma confronted me with the realities that rape survivors face, that their healing process starts from within, mentally and physically, but must continue outward, repairing their bonds and trust within their families, communities, and cultural institutions as well.

A stoutheartedness that births from facing the most difficult emotional, mental, physical, and darkest abuses most cannot fathom. This book is an unlocked chest of wounds that is another’s shame to bear, not mine. Tangled secrets kept that should be a beacon of light to guide others in the fight of their lives. Mental health, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression are merely a design of cruel burdensome oppression inflicted on innocence. I have laid bare my scars on these pages as a gift for others so that they too may free their afflictions on strengthened wings of fortitude. For all the survivors out there that were strong enough to let it all go and those still searching for courage to release their lacerations of torment.

Book excerpt: Everyone knows about Anne Frank and her life hidden in the secret annex – but what about the boy who was also trapped there with her? In this powerful and gripping novel, Sharon Dogar explores what this might have been like from Peter’s point of view. What was it like to be forced into hiding with Anne Frank, first to hate her and then to find yourself falling in love with her? Especially with your parents and her parents all watching almost everything you do together. To know you’re being written about in Anne’s diary, day after day? What’s it like to start questioning your religion, wondering why simply being Jewish inspires such hatred and persecution? Or to just sit and wait and watch while others die, and wish you were fighting. As Peter and Anne become closer and closer in their confined quarters, how can they make sense of what they see happening around them? Anne’s diary ends on August 4, 1944, but Peter’s story takes us on, beyond their betrayal and into the Nazi death camps. He details with accuracy, clarity and compassion the reality of day to day survival in Auschwitz – and ultimately the horrific fates of the Annex’s occupants.
